To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, JOSEPH LUrrINo, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Convertible and Folding Couch and Chair, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved convertible and folding couch and chair arranged to permit of conveniently converting the couch into a chair or vice versa, or folding the same to form a comparatively small bundle for ready storing or transporting purposes.

In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of a head section, a middle or a chair section and a foot section, the sections being pivotally connected with each other and when extended form a couch or bed, the head section being adapted to be swung upward to form a back for the middle or seat section, and the foot section being adapted to fold onto the middle section to form with the said head and middle sections a chair. Use is also made of legs for supportingthe head section, the leg being connected by a link with the adjacent leg of the middle section, and a retaining deviceheld on the said adjacent leg to engage the said link with a view to hold the head section in up right position.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the convertible and folding couch and chair with the sections extended to form a couch, part of the head section being broken out; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same with the sections extended to form a chair; Fig. 4 is a front end view of the same; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same with the sections in folded position and Fig. 6 is'a plan view of part of the chair.

The convertible and folding couch and chair consists essentially of a head section A, a middle or chair seat section B and a foot section C, of which the latter is con nected by hinges C to the lower end of the middle section B while the upper end of the latter is pivotally connected with a horizontal extension D of a leg D, on which the lower end of the head section is pivoted so that the sections A, B and C can be folded one relatively to the other, as hereinafter more fully described. The forward or upper end of the head section A is provided with a pivoted leg E pivotally connected at each side by links F with the lower end of g the leg D, and each link F is provided with a pin F adapted to be engaged by one of a series of notches G formed in a retaining lever G fulcrumed on the leg D and pressed on by a spring G The retaining lever G serves to lock the head section A in upright position, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, at the time the said head section forms the back for the chair, the seat of which is provided by'the sections B and C, of which the latter free ends engaging pins J projecting from the sides of the leg H. Thus when the braces J engage the pins J the leg H is'held locked in vertical position, but when the links J are disconnected from the pins J then the said'legs H can fold upon the under side of the section B, as indicated in Fig. 5.

The lower end of the foot section C is provided with a leg K pivotally connected at K to the sides of the foot section C, and the said leg K is provided with upward extensions K pivotally connected by links L with pivots N held on the lower end of the middle section B and which pivots N also form the pivots for the leg H.

When the foot section C is swung from its extended position, as shown in Fig. 2, upwardly and over onto the middle section B then the links C impart a swinging motion to the leg K so that the said leg folds on the sides of the foot section C, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3, see also Fig. 5. The head section A is provided near its pivotal end with a cross bar A, preferably bent so as not to interfere with the bed spring or canvas cover, as the case may be. When the several sections are in extended position, as shown in-Figs. l and 2, they form a bed or a couch, and when it is desired to convert this couch into a chair then the operator swings the head section A upward and in doing so the pinF engages one of the notches G" at the ends of the retaininglever Gthus locking the head section A in the upright position into which it is moved by the operator. The foot section (3 is swung upward and then the operator disconnects the links J the head section A and the leg'D. Itwill also be noticed that'after the braces J are disconnected from the pins J the section B with the section C resting thereon willbe swung upward, and in doing so the leg H is folded owing to the action of .the link I so that the several folded parts take up very little room, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 5. It will further benoticed that by pivoting-the middle section B on the horizontal extension D ofthe leg D suliicient room is had between the headscation A and the middlesection B to accommodate the foot section G between the same as shown in Fig. 3.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In combination a head section and a cha r seat section, the sections being pivotally connected with each other and the said chair. seat section having pivoted legs .at each end and the said head section having pivoted legs, links connecting the legs of the V headsection with the adjacent .legs of! the chair seat section, a pin on said linln'and a notched retaining lever adapted to engage the pin on the link for the leg of the said head section, the said lever being fulcruined on the adjacent leg of the chair seat section.

In combination, a chair seat section havlng legs, a head section pivotally connected with the said chair seat section and having pivoted legs, a link pivotally c011- having legs, a head section pivotally connected with the said chair seat section and having a pivoted leg, a link pivotally con necting the said head section leg with the adjacent leg of the said chair seat section, a

retaining device held on the said adjacent legand engaging the said link for the leg of the head section, the said retaining device having a yoke lever having end xtensions provided with notches, and a pin on the leg link adapted to be engaged by one of the said notches and a spring for holding said retaining device locked.

4:. In combination, a chair seat section having legs pivoted thereto, a head section pivotally connected with the said chair seat section and having pivoted legs, a link pivotally connecting the said head section legs with the adjacent legs of the said chair seat section, a retaining device having a spring controlled lever provided with notches at or near its end, and a pin on the leg link of the two subscribing witnesses.
