To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. Bowls and CARY 1%. SMITH, citizens of the United States, residing at Bremen, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swivel Combination-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in' pumping valves for use in wells lined with tubing or pipe, such as are common in deep water and oil wells.
The invention has for its object to provide an efficient durable and reliable pumping valve; to provide a swivel connection between the pumping valve and its operating rod; and to so construct the pumping valve that it can be readily assembled, or taken apart.
The invention consists in the novel instrumentalities and features of construction sub stantially as hereinafter described and de lined in the appended claims.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the present preferred embodiment of the invention, but various changes and modifications may be made in the detailed construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The pumping valve is designed for use in a pipe or tubular casing 1. In this casing below the level of the liquid to be elevated, there is customarily placed a standing valve or check valve (not shown) which prevents the return of any fluid lifted by the pumping valve, which operates in the casing above said standing valve.
The pumping valve, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a main tubular body 2 having a valve chamber C in its lower end Specification of Letters Patent.

and a tubular stem 7 above said chamber, whlch stem is connected at top with a tubular head 10 to which is attached a swivel member 16. To the lower end of the tubular body is attached a removable perforated plug 3; and surrounding the tubular stem are annular packings or rings 12 which may be separated by spacers 13.
The body or tubular member 2, has a lower open end, which is closed by a complemental tubular member or plug 3 provided with suitable apertures 4:; and within the chamber C is a preferably spherical check valve 5, adapted to prevent the downward escape of liquid from chamber C when the pumping valve makes an upstroke, as will be readily understood. The plug 3 is preferably threaded into the lower open end of the body 2, and has a circumferential flange 6 that engages the lower end of the body 2 to limit the extent of insertion of the plug.
The upward tubular extension or stem 7 of body 2 is somewhat constricted, a shoulder 8 being formed at the base of said stem; and to the upper end of said stem 7 is connected (or threaded, as at 9,) a second tu bular member or head 10 provided with lateral openings or ports 11 for the upward escape of the liquid from chamber C. A plurality of notches or passages 12 may be provided within the upper end of chamber C for the passage of liquid by the check valve 5 upon the downstroke of the pumping valve.
Surrounding the stem 7 between the shoulder 8 and the lower end of the head 10 is a plurality of annular packings 12 and spacers 13. These packings when in use will swell up and close the space between the valve and casing, shown in Fig. 1, and thus prevent back flow of liquid exterior to the pumping valve, and between it and the casing 1, upon the upstroke of the pumping valve, as is obvious. The packing rings can be readily slipped upon the stem 7 before the head 10 is attached thereto, and are retained in position by means of the shoulder 8 and the head 10; and may be removed and replaced by detaching said head- In the upper end of the stem 7 are opposed vertical slots 14: therein through which passes a transverse pin 15 fixed in the head 10, thus providing for a limited vertical adjustment of head 10 on the stem.
A swivel member 16 having a depending screw threaded shank 17 is superposed upon the head 10, the shank 17 being inserted in and depending through a central aperture 18 in the upper end of head 10; and upon the lower end of shank 17 and within head 10 is secured a collar or nut 19 seated in a recess 20 within the upper end of head 10. A cotter or split pin 21 inserted through a transverse aperture 22 in the shank 17 engages notches 23 in the nut 19. Thus a rotatable swivel connection is made between said members 10 and 16 which will not only constantly hold the various members of which the complete valve is made up in axial alinement but one which is also very advantageous in the practical operation of the pumping valve. The actuating rod 24:
may be connected to the upper screw threaded terminal 16' of the swivel member, as shown in Fig. 1; and said swivel member may be flattened on opposite sides, as at 30, for engagement by a wrench.
The perforations in the plug 4, while admitting fluid into the valve chamber, prevent the entrance of any object which might choke the valve. The swivel permits the pumping valve to turn on its actuating rod without becoming detached, and without being strained.
The said pumping valve will pump fluids from great depths; it is very durable and is not liable to get out of order or be disarranged.
We claim 1. A pumping valve comprising a tubular body having a valve chamber and an upwardly extending tubular stem, a perforated plug attached to the lower end of said body, a valve in said chamber, a laterally apertured head connected to the upper end of said stem having a closed upper end provided with an axial bore, a swivel member above the head having a shank rotatably engaged with the bore in said head, and means in the head engaging said shank, substantially as described.
2. A pumping valve comprising a tubular body having an upwardly extending tubular stem, an internally recessed tubular head detachably connected to the upper end of said stem and having lateral ports, a swivel member above the head having a shank entering the head, and a nut on said shank within the recess in said head. i
3. A pumping valve comprising a hollow body having a tubular stem, a detachable tubular head having a threaded engagement with the upper end of said stem, said head having lateral ports and an axial bore in its upper end, a swivel member having a depending shank entering the bore of the head, a nut within the head engaged with the lower end of the swivel member, and a pin extending through said shank to secure the nut.
4. In a pumping valve, the combination of a tubular body having a valve chamber in its lower end and a tubular stem, a perforated plug attached to the lower end of said body, a valve in said chamber above said plug, a recessed tubular head provided with ports detachably attached to the upper end of the tubular stem, a swivel member having an axial shank rotatably connected to the upper end of said tubular head so that the head can rotate thereon, and means within said head to secure the shank thereto.
5. The herein described swivel combination valve, comprising a tubular body having a valve chamber in its lower end a tubular stem above the valve chamber and notches at the upper end of said chamber to permit the passage of fluid around the valve, a valve in said chamber, a plug removably secured to the lower end of said chamber to retain the valve therein and provided with perforations for the admission of fluid, and a swivel member rotatably attached to the upper end of said stem.
6. The herein described swivel combination valve, comprising a tubular body having a valve chamber in its lower end, and a tubular stem above the valve chamber; a valve in said chamber; a plug removably secured to the lower end of said chamber to retain the valve therein, and cup leathers on the exterior of said tubular stem; a tubular head removably attached to the upper end of said stem and provided with lateral openings communicating with the stem and having an axial bore in its upper end, a swivel post having an axial shank engaging said bore, a nut engaging said shank within said head whereby the shank is rotatably secured to said head, and a nut on said stem within the head, substantially as described.
