To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID J. MoNosMrrrI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spencer, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Incandescing Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a burner for acetylene or other gas lamps of the type wherein a flame is projected against an in-.
vide such a burner, which is of simple andinexpensive construction, and is easily disassembled for the purpose of cleaning or making repairs.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view as will be readily understood, the invention will be hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof, and the novel features of the in vention will be distinctly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a burner constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the incandescing element holder, Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 illustrates a lamp with the burner in the ordinary position with relation to the reflector, Fig. 6 is a similar View with the burner shown in the opposite position, and Fig. 7 is a View showing a modificationof the cap sleeve.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the gas supply pipe which terminates within the lamp casing 2 in front of the reflector 3. Securely fixed to the upper end of gas supply pipe 1 is a cylindrical base 4, which is centrally hollowed out at 5 and internally threaded for screwing onto the threaded end 6 of said pipe. The lower end of the cylindrical base 4 is provided with a flange 7,
the upper face of which forms an annular shoulder 8, and its periphery is out in the form of a hexagon nut as at 9, to furnish meansfor screwing the base 4 onto the gas supply pipe. The hollowed out portion 5 of the base 4 is preferably enlarged at 10 to provide clearance. The inner side of the top 11 ofthe base 4 isconical in shape, and said top is provided with a gas outlet opening 12. v
Rotatably mounted on the cylindrical base 4 is a cap sleeve 13 with its lower edge resting on the shoulder 8, so that there is a space 14 between itstop 15 and the top 11 of the base. The wall of the cap sleeve 13 is providedwith a plurality of air inlet apertures 16 leading to said space 14, A Bunsen tube 17, threaded at itsslower end for a considerable length asfshown at 18, is rigidly fixed into the top 15 of the cap sleeve 13, and is curved first outwardly at 19 and then up-. wardly at an angle as shown at 20, to project a flame against a block of incandescing material indicated by 21. The nozzle end 22 of the Bunsen tube 17 is preferablytapering in form to reduce the area and give increased velocity to the flow of gas.
In order to support the block of incandescing material 21 in proper relation to the nozzle end 22 of the Bunsen tube, the same is fixed into a hollow cylindrical head 23 carried on a vertical bar 24 and constituting a holder. The bar 24 of said holder is adapted to slide into anupright guide 25 formed integral with a washer plate 26, which fits over the Bunsen tube 17 and is held securely to the top 15 of the cap sleeve 13 by means of a lock nut 27, which engages the before mentioned threads 18 of said Bunsen tube. It will be noted that the end of the bar 24 of the incandescing material holder rests upon the top 15 of the cap sleeve 13. Any suitable means may be provided for locking the cap sleeve 13 against rotation on the base 4 to fix it in any adjusted position. shown in Fig. 1, the cap sleeve is thickened at 28 for receiving a set screw 29 which is adapted to engagethe side of the base 4. Or the cap sleeve may be made of springy sheet material as at 30 Fig. 7 and its side slotted as indicated at 31 to leave springy portions therebetween for snugly engaging the base.
From the above it will be seen, that as.
sen tube together with the incandescing material, the cap sleeve may be fixed to the base by means of the set screw 29 either in the position shown in Fig. 5, to cause the rays of light from the incandescing material to be projected against the reflector 3, or it may be adjusted to the position in Fig. 6 to give light without the rays first striking the reflector. Furthermore, the cap sleeve may be readily removed from the base for the purpose of cleaning the parts, or the incandescing material holder easily withdrawn from its guide for supplying new incandescing material.
Although the construction disclosed is well adapted for carrying out the intended purpose, it will be understood that slight changes may be made within the scope of the claims.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a burner, the combination of a base, a cap sleeve rotatably mounted on the base, means for locking the cap sleeve to the base against free sliding movement thereon, a Bunsen tube projecting from the cap sleeve, a guide fixed to the cap sleeve, a holder removably supported by the guide, and an incandescing element carried by the holder, substantially as described.
2. In a burner, the combination of a base, a cap sleeve telescopically mounted on the base and adapted to rotate thereon, means for locking the cap sleeve to the base, a Bunsen tube having threads at its lower end screwed into the cap sleeve, a nut on said threaded portion of the Bunsen tube, a guide held by the nut, a holder removably supported by the guide, and an incandescing element carried by the holder, substantially as described.
3. In a burner, the combination of a cylindrical base, the base having a gas outlet opening, a flange on the base forming an annular shoulder, a cap sleeve rotatably mounted on the base and resting on said annular shoulder thereof said cap sleeve extending above the base thus leaving a space between the base and itself, the cap sleeve being provided with air inlet openings leading to said space portion, a Bunsen tube having threads at its lower end screwed into the cap sleeve to communicate with said space, a nut on the threaded portion of the Bunsen tube, a washer clamped between the cap sleeve and the nut, 'a guide integral with the washer, a holder having a bar adapted to slidably fit into the guide, an incandescing element carried by the holder, the Bunsen tube having a curved end for projecting a flame against the incandescing element, and means for locking the cap sleeve to the base, substantially as described.
4. In a burner, the combination of a cylindrical base, the base having a gas outlet opening, a flange on the base forming an annular shoulder, a cap sleeve rotatably mounted on the base and resting on said annular shoul er thereof, the cap sleeve being made of springy sheet material and having slots cut in the side thereof to leave springy portions therebetween, said cap sleeve extending above the base thus leaving a space between the base and itself, the cap sleeve being provided with air inlet openings leading to said space portion, a Bunsen tube fixed to said cap sleeve and communicating with said space, and an incandescing element supported on the cap sleeve for receiving a flame from the Bunsen tube, substantially as described.
