lMPRQVEM ENT IN ALARM-BELLS.

The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and mixing part of the lame.

To'all whom this may concern Be it known that I, Srnncnn 0. Born), of Hainesville, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Alarm-' Bells; and I do hereby'declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and letters marked thereon,-in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my improvement in alarm' bclls as applied as a call-bell to a door.

The nature of the present invention consists in a bell so combined with suitable mechanism that the device may be used as a call-bell or an alarm-bell, both for doors and windows, as the whole is hereinafter fully described. A represents a face-plate, which supports the bell and the mechanism for ringing it, and also a rib, O, for the convenience of attaching the plate to a door when the bell is to be used as an alarm. 4

H represents a' post, which supports an ordinary bell, G, in the usual manner.

I is the crank-wheel, which, by means of a band, B, drives a wheel, E.

This latter wheel E is provided with a ratchet, D, which operates a'bell-hammer, J K, pivoted to the plate A atL, so as to ring the bell G, said bell-hammer being held in position by a spring, M.

When the device is to be used as a call-bell a crank, P, by means of a shaft or spindle, N, is used to ring the bell; but when the device is used as an alarm-the crank and spindle may be removed by simply detaching the rosette 0 from the door B, fig. 1.

The rib O of plate; A projects far enough to the front of said plate to receive a screw for holding the device to a door, as shown at fig. 3; and the said rib, being formed diagonally across the end of plate A, permits the ratchet-wheel D to roll on the floor or carpet, and thus operate the hammer J K so as to ring the bell G when a. dooris being opened.

The rib O can be attached to a window-sill so as to bring the ratchet .D against the, sash and cause an alarm when the sash is raised.

The device can be also'attached to other parts of a window so that an' alarm will be given, as, for instance, to the top rail of lower sash, the ratchet running on the jamb-casing.

In the foregoing I have described a complete alarm-.
