COUNTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Fatentcd June 29, 1915.
7 Application filed April 10, 1913. Serial No. 760,082.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EVELYN G. MGGIN- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Counting Devices, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a counting device especially designed for use by children in kindergarten and the lower grades of schools.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, strong and efficient device for the purpose specified, which is adapted to be secured to the top of a desk, or bench and which is constructed as will be described so as to enable the balls or count ers to be readily replaced in case they should become broken or injured, and which is extensible to fit desks of different widths and to enable the number of balls or counters to be increased or diminished as desired.
The particular features of the invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of desk provided with a counting device embodying this invention. Fig. 2, an elevation of the counting device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, an elevation and section of the supporting frame for the balls, and Figs. 4 and 5, details to be referred to.
The counting device is shown separately in Figs. 2 and 5 and consists of a plurality of devices shown as balls a, which are strung upon a metal supporting frame, comprising two members Z), 0.
The member .7) is preferably made as herein shown, and consists of a horizontal tubular portion 10, which is fitted over and soldered or otherwise secured to the reduced end 12 of a horizontal portion 1 1 of a rod bent to form an upright portion or leg 15, which is split at its lower end and spread apart substantially at right angles to the upright portion 15, to form feet 16, which are adapted to rest upon the top of a support, such as a bench or as herein shown a desk (Z.
The member 0 is preferably made as herein shown and consists of a metal rod bent to form an upri ht portion or leg 17 and a horizontal portion 18, the upright portion 17 being split at its lower end and spread apart to form feet 19, and the horizontal portion having secured to or forming part of it a rod 20 of sufiiciently small diameter to enter the horizontal tubular portion 10 of the member 6.
The balls or other counters a; are strung upon the horizontal portion 10 of the memher 6, and one or more may be strung on the horizontal portion 18 of the member 0, after which the rod 20 is inserted into the horizontal portion 10 of the member I). The de vice is now ready to be secured in fixed position on the desk 03, which may be effected by means of screws (not shown), which are passed through holes 21 in the feet 16, 19.
From the above description it will be seen that the device is simple, efiicient and inexpensive and that it is extensible, which enables the number of balls to be increased or diminished and further enables the deviceto be used on desks of different widths.
Furthermore in case the balls should become broken, chipped or otherwise damaged, they can readily be replaced by new balls, as it is only necessary to unfasten the member 0 from the desk and withdraw it from the other member Z).
I claim 1. A counting device of the character described, comprising a rod bent to form an upright portion and a horizontal portion, the former being split at its lower end and bent substantially at right angles to form feet, and a horizontal tube secured to the said horizontal portion to form an extension thereof, and a second member comprising a rod bent to form a horizontal portion and a vertical portion, which latter is split at its end and bent substantially at right angles thereto to form feet, a rod secured at one end to the horizontal portion of the second mentioned member and extended into the horizontal portion of the first mentioned member, and a series of counters mounted upon the horizontal portions of said members, substantially as described.
2. A counting device of the character described, comprising two metal rods bent to form upright and horizontal portions, said upright portions being provided with feet at their lower ends, a tube extended from the horizontal portion of one of the bent rods, and a rod extended from the horizontal portion of the other of said bent rods and movable into and out of said tube, and a plurality of counters supported by and movable on said tube portion, substantially as described.
3. A counting device of the character described, comprising two members provlded with substantially vertical portions having feet provided with openings for the passage tached to said vertical portions, and a plurality of counters supported by and movable on said intermediate) portion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
