T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OLE H. DETLIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hudson, in the county of Lincoln and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in saw sets, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed device which may be readily adapted to the teeth of saws of various forms and sizes, either circular, cross-cut, or other forms.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device which is adjustable to saw teeth of various outlines and relative arrangement.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved device. F ig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the adjustable gage member. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the improved device with the set lever support arranged obliquely to the longitudinal plane of the stock or body, to illustrate the manner of employing the device upon certain forms of saw teeth. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of the stock or body and the set lever supporting head in separated relation. Fig. 6 is a perspective detached view of the set lever.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indi cated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device embraces a body or stock 10 which may be of any required size and of any suitable material and which may be secured in any suitable manner to a stationary support, the stock being provided with apertures 11 to receive the holding screws or other fastening devices.
At one end the stock 10 is reduced and provided with a longitudinal slot 12 in the reduced portion and with a transverse slot 13 in the opposite end.
A substantially U-shaped head member for supporting the set lever is provided and represented as a whole at 14 and formed with spaced substantially parallel arms, one
of which at its outer extremity, is providedwith a tongue 15 engaging in the slot 13 and pivoted therein as shown at 16. By this means the head member 14: is free to swing laterally relative to the stock 10, and the stock is provided with a set screw 17 to enable the head member to be held in any adjusted position, the object to be hereafter explained.
The set lever head is formed with a longitudinally directed upper portion 18 constituting one of the arms referred to which extends over a portion of the upper face of the stock 10 and is spaced therefrom, and
provided with a longitudinally directed vertical slot 19 in which the set lever 20 is pivoted at 21. The anvil portion of the device is formed at the inner extremity of the arm carrying the tongue 15 as shown at 22 in Fig. 2, and the set lever 20 is formed with its bearing face 23 to correspond to the anvil face when the set lever is moved into operative position. The anvil face, it will be noted, extends obliquely to the upper face of the stock 10, the degree of angularity representing the set which is to be imparted to the saw tooth. A gage screw 24 operates through the forward end of the projecting portion 18 and is provided with a swiveled head 25 at the lower end for engaging the body of the saw and preventing the latter from moving upwardly when the set lever is actuated. By this means the saw is firmly held in position upon the body while the teeth are being set.
Bearing around the set lever head 14: is a gage device formed of a single strip of metal, preferably steel, and represented as a whole at 26 with laterally directed terminals 27 and longitudinal slots 28. The sides of the member 26 bear upon opposite sides of the head 14 with the pivot 21 of the set lever extending through the slots, the pivot being provided at one end with a clamp nut 29. In this connection, it will be observed that the lever 20 is pivoted to the bight portion of the substantially U-shaped set lever head. The offset ends 27 are thus adjustable together with the member 26 to enable them to be engaged by the teeth of the saw, and thus gage the latter and cause the set lever to engage each tooth at the same point and secure uniformity in the setting. The slots 28 thus provide for the adjustment of the member 26 to teeth of various sizes and depths.
Bearing upon the upper face of the reduced portion ofthe stock 10 is a plate 30 having a circular hub 31 arising therefrom and through which and the plate 30 a clamp bolt 32 extends, the clamp bolt projecting through the slot 12 and being provided with a nut 33 at its lower end. By this means the plate 30 with its hub 31 may be adjusted to any required extent within the range of the slot 12. The hub 31 is designed to receive the mandrel receiving opening of a circular saw to hold the latter while the teeth are being set and by adjusting the member 30 with its hub 31 in the slot 12 the device may be readily adapted to'circular saws of various sizes.
The stock 10 set lever head 14 and the set lever 20 will be constructed of metal of sufficient strength to Withstand the strains to which they will be subjected, and the device may be constructed of varying sizes to suit saws of any required form or size.
The slot 19 increases in width toward the inner end of the projection, and through this slot the anvil and the tooth of the saw which is to be set is visible, and thus assists 7 the operator in'properly locating the tooth above the anvil.
The plate 30 extends for a considerable distance at each side of the stock and thus provides a support for a circular saw when the latter is located with its mandrel opening engaging over the hub 31. The upper face of the member 30 issubstantially level orin alinement with the upper face of the portionof the stock which extends beneath the overhang 18, so that the saw w ien disposed uponthe plate will lie flat upon the body of the stock and be effectually supported thereby.
; Mounting the head 1A to swing laterally is an important feature of applicants device and materially increases its eiiiciency and utility, and enables the anvil and the set lever to be adjusted laterally to a suflicient extent to adapt the device to saw teeth of varying forms.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
' 1. A device of the character described including a stock, a set lever head embraced at one end by the stock and adjustable thereon in a plane with the stock, the said head being provided with an anvil, means adjustable upon the stock to engage the end of the head embraced by the stock for holding the head at adjustment, a set lever carried by the head and disposed to coact with the anvil, and means adjustable upon the head longitudinally of the anvil in a plane parallel with the plane of the stock and providing a saw gage.
2. A device of the character described 1ncluding a stock provided with a fiat upper face, a set lever head embraced by the stock and adjustable thereon in a plane with the stock, means adjustable upon the stock to engage the portion of the head embraced by the stock for holding the head at adjustment, the said head being provided with an anvil, a set lever carried by the head and disposed to coact with said anvil, and means adjustable upon the head toward or away from said flat face and providin a saw clamp.
3. A device of the character described including a stock, a set lever head freely connected with the stock and adjustable thereon in a plane with the stock, means ad.- justable upon the stock to engage the head for holding the head at adjustment, the said head being provided with an anvil, a set lever pivoted upon the head and disposed to coact with the anvil, and means adjustable upon the pivot of the said lever longitudinally of the anvil in a plane parallel with the plane of the stock and providing a saw 4. 5. A device of the character described including a stock, a substantially U-shaped set lever head providing spaced arms, one of which is freely connected to the stock and formed with an anvil adjacent its inner eX- tremity, the other of said arms hearing over the stock in spaced relation thereto and be ing longitudinally slotted, the head being adjustable upon the stock in a plane therewith, means adjustable upon the stock to engage said first mentioned arm for holding the head at adjustment, saw cl ampingmeans adjustable upon said last mentioned arm toward or away from the stock, and a set lever disposed to coact with the anvil and pivotally mounted upon the bight portion of said head, the said lever being disposed for movement in said slot.
