United States Patent CIRCLE SAW SET l.Robert-L. Reisinger,-saginaw,-Mici1. Application December 18, 1952, YSerial No. 326,682
1 claim. (cl. 76;-63)
This invention relates to a circle saw set and more particularly to a tool adapted to receive circle saws of various diameters and properly position the same to effectively produce the desired set therein.
An object of this invention is to provide a circle saw set having means to rigidly mount the saw in proper horizontal position.
A further object is to provide a feed screw provided with a knob and collar to prevent end play of the screw.
Another object is to provide a novel anvil and hammer to eifeceively produce rapid and eicient saw setting and to facilitate setting all teeth at the same angle.
A still further object is to provide a positioning block having mechanism readily adaptable to circle saws having center holes of various diameters.
Another object is to provide a positioning block easily movable to properly position a saw.
. These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a plan view of the invention with the pivoted cam hammer removed showing a circle saw mounted for setting;
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same taken substantially along line 2 2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an end section taken substantially along line 3 3 in Figure 2, with the cam hammer removed;
Figure 4 is another vertical section taken substantially along line 4 4 in Figure 2; and,
`Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view showing the cam hammer in detail and taken substantially along line 5 5 in Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that reference numeral designates generally a frame. The frame includes a pair of spaced opposed side walls 12 secured at opposite end portions thereof and securing brackets 14, in any suitable manner. Each bracket is provided with apertures 16 at opposite ends thereof by means of which the device as a unit may be attached to any suitable support 18. ln the preferred form shown, bolts 20 are provided for this purpose.
At one end of the device a journal block 22 is disposed between the side walls 12 on the upper surface of a corresponding securing bracket 14. The block, walls and bracket may be formed integrally or separately, in which latter case the various elements may be rigidly secured together in any suitable manner. In either case, it is necessary that the device be formed as rigidly as possible. The journal block 22 is provided with a longitudinal bore 24 and an outer face 26, the purpose of which will subsequently become apparent.
At the opposite end of the device a combined anvil and journal block 2S is positioned and secured similarly to journal block 22, as will readily be seen. The combined block has an anvil portion 30 which presents a slopice .f2 ling:triangularsurfacefas clearly l"show-n2infFigures-' 1 and 2. -The angle t or 1 degree-tof slope of ythe .l anvilY 'surface' corre-j spends -to lthat'ian'gle conventionally used inllsettingnsaw teeth. The combined iblock is -.providjed Iwith I a f lon'gii '.tndinal bore .32 andan outer sui-face134 similar -inipuri pose vand design -to corresponding portions lof journal rThe combined block 28 has a pair of upstanding ears 36 to Whichis pivoted a cam 38 vhaving an actuating handle 40.r Alpivotipinifeitedslthfoughfftlie-ears and cam for' pivotallhamenptingtthelatter..i;Atportion. 0f the Cam 37 has`a generally triangulanh mmer .surface 44 which 'is motametovvardnn awayfom the anvil 'surface 30 for imparting the proper set to a saw tooth disl posed therebetween.
Referring now more particularly to Figure 2, reference numeral 46 designates generally the feed screw mechanism. The screw has opposite end portions 48 presenting bearing surfaces received in the longitudinal bores 24 and 32 of blocks 22 and 28 respectively. The end of screw 46 adjacent block 22 has a shoulder 50 and a linger knob 52. The shoulder and knob are disposed on the outer side of block 22 and shoulder 50, having a greater diameter than bore 24, abuts the outer surface 26 of the block 22. The finger knob 52 is provided so that manual rotation of the feed screw may be effected. The other end of screw 46 adjacent block 28 extends outwardly therefrom and has positioned thereon a collar 54. The collar is secured to the shaft by means of a set screw 56 or the like and abuts the outer surface 34 of combined block 28 in like manner to shoulder 50. The collar 54 and shoulder 50 cooperate to prevent longitudinal shifting of the feed screw 46.
An intermediate portion of the feed screw is threaded, as at 53, and threadedly engages a positioning block 60. The positioning block has opposite sides 62 in close engagement with opposing surfaces of the side wall 12 and being guided thereby. The upper end of the positioning block is formed as an annular flange 64 which presents a supporting surface for receiving a circle saw. Centrally disposed of the positioning block is an upstanding stud 66 having a threaded upper end 68. A tapered plug 70 has a centrally disposed bore receiving the stud and a wing nut 72 is disposed on the upper end 68 of the stud for urging the plug 72 toward the positioning block 60. The plug, being tapered, is receivable in saw center holes of various diameters.
When it is desired to perform setting operation on a saw the same is positioned with itsv center hole receiving the stud 66, the plug 70 is positioned ron the stud and wing nut 72 is tightened. The saw is thereby properly centered and positioned on the positioning block 60. To then move the saw into proper longitudinal position with respect to anvil 30 it is merely necessary to manipulate the finger knob as required.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be restorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A saw set comprising a frame having a pair of spaced elongated parallel side walls, a bearing block secured between corresponding ends of said side walls, a cornbined bearing block and anvil secured between the other ends of the side walls and having a top face including a horizontal portion above said side walls and an inclined portion inclinng downwardly from said horizontal portion, a feed screw extending longitudinally between said side walls with ends journaled through said bearing blocks,
portion to set a tooth of a saw, and a pair of straight horizontal bracket members extending from opposite sides of said bearing blocks for attachment of the saw set to a base.
