MATCH-BOX HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 15, 1915.
1 Application filed ApriI 18, 1913. Serial No. 761,879.
To all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that I, EDWARD V. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and State of'Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match 7 Box Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had. therein to v the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a holder for provide certain other new and useful features in the construction, all as hereinafter more fully described."
To these ends the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention showing the same in folded position for use; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the blank from which the holder is formed, in its flat folded position for shipping; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the blank as cut from a single sheet of material.
The device is designed and especially adapted for holding a paper match box of the usual form and size in which matches are vended and this holder, when in folded position as shown in Fig. 1 is of a size to receive such a match box and hold the same with its open side uppermost so that the matches may be readily taken out.
The holder is formed from a single blank of cardboard or other suitable material as shown in Fig. 3 with a central rectangular portion 1 which forms, when the blank is folded into operative position, the bottom of the holder. The blank is scored, creased or otherwise formed along the sides of the bottom portion as at 2 and 3 so that a back strip 4 which extends laterally from one side of the bottom may be folded upward at right angles thereto to form the back side of the box or holder. Extending laterally from each end of the bottom portion 1 is a wing 5 and integral with the forward edge of the bottom portion is a front strip 6 which stripis divided from the wings 5 by slits 7 extending inward to lines which the blank is scored or creased end of the bottom 1. The line of scoring 3 connects the ends of the slits 7 and thus the front strip'6 maybe readily turned upward at right angles to the bottom '1 independently of the wings '5 and said wings may be 8 along at each I turned upwardly at right angles to the bottom along thescored line.
The lines of scoring 8 are extendedacross the strip 6 and thus the end portions 9 of said front strip may be folded'over upon its middle portion which is adapted to form the front side of the holder. Near the ends of the portions 9 they are scored transversely as at 10 so that the strip may again be folded at right angles and the end portions 11 thus formed are provided with hooks 12 extending from the ends of these portions to engage suitable slots 13 in the back portion 4 7 adjacent to the scored line 2 along which the back is folded.
The blank is folded in the position shown in Fig. 1 by turning the back strip 4 and end wings 5 upwardly at right angles to the bottom portion 1, thenv bending the front strip 6 upwardly and bringing its end portions 9 around against the outer sides of the wings 5, and turning the tabs 11 against the outer face of the back 4 and engaging the hooks 12 with the slots 13. The hooked ends of the tabs 11 thus form the only locking means to hold the entire device in folded position and these ends may be quickly detached from their slits at any time and the holder again flattened out.
As shown in Fig. 2 the blank may be folded in a very compact form for shipment by folding the wings 5 and end portions 9 inwardly upon the bottom portion 1 and front strip 6 and then folding the back 4 over upon these inwardly folded portions to cover the same and protect the sharp corners and hooked ends 12 from injury in handling. The upwardly extending back portion 4 also forms a broad support for the holder by means of which it may be hung against a wall and any desired'printed matter, picture or other ornamentation may be placed upon the back as well as upon the side and end portions if so desired.
Obviously, changes may be made in the construction, sizes and proportion of the parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not therefore limit myself to the particular construction shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is As an article of manufacture, a foldable blanlrfor match holderscapable of being folded with all the parts thereof confined Within and between the top and bottom of said holder, comprising a central portion to form the bottom of the holder, a rigid back portion of greater area than the bottom of the holder extending from one side of the bottom portion with a folding line'at the meeting of the back and bottom portion, said back portion being formed with angle slits adjacent to said folding line and at the side edges of said back portion, wing portions extending from the ends of the bottom portion and adapted to be folded upon said central portion, a front strip extending from the side of the bottom portion and divided from the wing portions by slits, a folding line being formed connecting the ends of tion and in parallelismwiththe folding line of the back portion, and folding lines being providedalong the meeting lines of the wing lines adjacent tosaid hooks, the said ends of said front strip adapted to be folded upon said front strip and said back portion folded into parallel registration with said'ce'ntral portion, whereby the edgesof said back portion and said front strip can be connected together to maintain folded parts between the top and bottom of the'holder.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
