MAIL-CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 15, 1915.
Application filed June 13, 1914. Serial N 0. 844,892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN JULrUs WnsTFmLD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Princeton, in the county of Green Lake and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mail-Cabinets, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The invention relates to mail cabinets.
The invention designs to provide a mail cabinet which is particularly adapted for use in mail wagons employed in the rural free delivery service.
The invention further designs to provide a mail cabinet mounted on an adjustable support, said mail cabinet having an open end and an extensible cover for closing said opening.
The invention further designs to provide a mail cabinet having an open end and an extensible cover for closing said end, slidable in guides on the box and adapted to be rolled up upon a spring roller.
The invention further designs to provide a new and improved form of mail cabinet.
The invention consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof; Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the cover.
The device comprises an open-ended mail cabinet 10 having compartments 11 therein for receiving different kinds of mail matter,
which is mounted on an adjustable support 12 and is provided with an extensible cover 13 for closing the open end of the box.
The adjustable support comprises a pair of U-shaped bracket members 13 having parallel arms 14 bent at right angles as at 15, and whose ends 16 are provided with a series of perforations 17 adapted to receive a bolt 18, said boltbeing disposed in any of the registering perforations 17 on the ends 16 of the supports. A pair of rods 19 are mounted in the arms 14 of the supports, and are provided with threaded ends 20, which carry adjustable Wing nuts 21. The cabinet 10 is placed upon the rods 19, as shown in Fig. 2, and the wing nuts are then screwed up on the rods, causing the U-shaped portions 13 of the bracket to engage the sides of the box and secure it in position. 7
The extensible cover 13 is made of two thicknesses of fabric 22, in which are inserted at intervals longitudinally-extending reinforcing rods 23, and the fabric is secured at one end to a spring roller 24 pivotally mounted on the top of the box, in brackets 25 adjacent the open end of said box. A cover 26 having spring clips 27 is designed to fit over the roller 24 having the cover 13 thereon, and is provided with a notch 28 for receiving a handle 29 on the lower end of the cover 13. The sides of the cover 13 are movable within guideways 30 on either side of the box 10, the cover 13 being drawn down over the open end of the box along the guideways against the action of the spring board 24, and being secured in extended positlon by means of a projection 31 on the lower edge of the cover, which engages a lug 32 on the bottom of the box, the guideways 30 being of suflicient width of movement of the cover therein to disengage the projection 31 from the lug 32, to permit the cover to be raised under the action of the spring roller.
The invention thus exemplifies a'mail cabinet having an open end, an extensible cover for closing said end, and an adjustable support for said box.
What I claim is:
1. A mail cabinet, comprising a support,
an open-ended box for receiving mail mounted on said support, and an extensible cover for closing the open end of said box, said support comprising a pair of adjustable U-shaped supporting members, and a pair of adjustable rods mounted in said members.
2. A mail cabinet comprising a support, an open-ended box for receiving mail mounted on said support, and. an extensible cover for closing the open end of said box, said support comprising a plurality of adjustable standards and a plurality of adjustable rods mounted in said standards.
3. A mail cabinet ended box, a spring roller mounted above said box, a cover for said roller detachably secured to said box, an extensible cover mounted on said roller for closing the open end of said box, and means for locking said extensible cover to the box.
to permit comprising an open- 4. A mail cabinet, comprising an 0pen In testimony hereof,1 affix my signature, ended box, a SBIlIlg roller mounted on said in presence of tWo Witnesses. box, an extens1b1e cover mounted on SELId HERMAN JULIUS WESTFIELD' roller for closing the open end of said box, 5 and means comprising a projection on the WVitnesses:
cover at the lower edge thereof for locking FRITZ C. KRUEGER,
it to the bottom edge of the box. FRANK MUELLER.
