RAIL-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented James, 1915.
Application filed October a, 1914. Serial No. 865,365.
such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in rail ties and residesin the provision of a simple and inexpensive rail tie that is formed of metal and will serve to.
support the rails in a most reliable manner so that creeping or spreading of the rails is obviated.
Another object is to provide a rail tie of the character described that consists of a hollow metallic body that is rectangular and provided with open ends that are arranged to be closed by end walls or plates, said end walls being removed to permit the filling of the tie with a suitable filler, if desired.
Another object is to provide a tie wherein the ends are constructed in a novel manner and so that the removable end walls therefor are removably held in proper position.
The above and additional objects areaccomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out as claimed.
iVith reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numbers designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a top plan View of my improved tie partly broken away at one end, Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken on the plane of line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 1 designates as an entirety, my
improved tie that is formed of some suitable metal and is hollow and rectangular.
The ends of the tie 1 are left open and the side walls of the tie are extended and slightly reduced at their ends so as to form resilient lockingtongues 2, said tie being constructed of some suitable resilient metal. The tongues 2 are slightly diverged toward their outer ends relative to one another and are formed by reoessing the upper and lower edges of the side walls inwardly a slight distance from the ends of the top and bottom walls, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The opposed faces of the tongues 2 at points inwardly with relation to the top and bottom walls of the tie 1 are formed with vertical grooves 3 that are designed to receive the side edges of a removable end wall or closure plate 4:.
As a means for securing the rail to the tie 1, I provide screw threaded rail fastening members 5 that are provided with large heads which engage upon the bases of the rails. The shanks of the members 5 are inserted through the top wall of the tie 1 and have nuts 6 turned on their lower terminals.
When it is desired to fill the hollow tie body 1 with cement or any other suitable filler the end walls 4; are removed by simply forcing the spring tongues 2 and 3 outwardly away from one another and the desired tiller placed within the tie. To close the tie at the ends the plates 423,16 forced against the spring action of the tongues 2 into the grooves 3 in said tongues and thus "emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportlon and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, Without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as set forth.
What is claimed is A rail tie consisting of a rectangular holloW metallic body portion having its ends open, the side Walls of said bodv portion being extended beyond the top and bottom Walls to form tongues, said tongues being diverged toward their ends relative to one another and having their opposed faces provided W'th vertical notches, and removable end Walls to be forced between the tongues and have their edges positioned Within the notches in said tongues.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
