Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1915.
Application filed August 4., 1914. Serial No. 855,016.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnancrs M. HETTRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yelm, in the county of Thurston and State of Washington, have invented-new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the followin is a specification. V
The present invention has relation to the type of locks embodying a bar, hasp, or like part and a keeper for receiving the end portion of such bar, hasp, or the like, and has for its object to automatically secure the bar or like part 10 passed into or through the keeper, the securing means being adapted to be released by a suitablekey, such lock being automatic thereby precluding the possibility of the parts being left unfastened when the door is closed and the bar properly entered into the keeper.
The invention consists of a lock of novel construction, adapted to automatically engage the bar when the latter is thrust into the keeper, such lock being adapted to be released by means of a key.
The invention consists of the novel features. details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated claimed.
In the drawings hereto attached :Figure 1 is a front view of a lock embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line w-x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a viewof the parts of the lock casing separated. Fig. 5 is a detail view in perspective of the lock bolt.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters. 7
The numeral 1 designates a bar, hasp, or like part which is adapted to be attached to the door or like closure to be fastened. The bar or like part 1 has a notch 2 which is adapted to receive the engaging portion of the lock bolt 3.
A slot 4 is formed in the outer end of the bar 1 to receive a staple, pad-lock, or other desired part. 1
The lock comprises a casing which is formed of two parts or members 5 and 6. A transverse opening 7 is formed in the easing to receive an end portionofthe band 1. The transverse opening 7 is preferably and formed in one of the parts or members of the casing and consists of a groove or channel formed in the inner face of the member 6, the outer side of such groove or channel being closed by the member 5.
A vertical recess 8 is formed in the memher 5 and extends across the opening 7 and receives the lock bolt 3.
It is observed that the lock bolt is located upon one side of the opening 7 with the enlargements l1 and 12 projecting across the plane of the opening 7 and entering the recesses 11 and 12. The inner end of the enlargement 9 is beveled and forms a catch or stop to enter the notch 2 of the bar 1 and secure such bar when thrust into the opening 7 of the lock casing. The weight of the lock bar ordinarily sufiices for holding the beveled end of the enlargement 9 projected across the upper portion of the transverse opening 7. however, it is preferred to place a spring 13 in the upper portion of the recess 11 so as to press the lock bar downward and yieldinglv hold the beveled end of the enlargement 9 in position to en gage the notch 2 of the bar 1. The enlargement 11 serves to limit the movements of the lock bolt and also to assist materiallv in directing such lock bolt in its reciprocating movements.
A key hole 14 is formed in the outer member 5 of the lock casing to one side of the vertical recess 8 and is adapted to receive the nib end of a key 15 by means of which the lock bolt 3 is moved to disengage the beveled end of the enlargement 9 from the notch 2 when it is desired to withdraw the bar 1 from the lock casing.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device WhlCh I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof. I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and
that such changes may bemade when desired as are Within the scope of the inven&
tion as claimed. 1 V 7 Having thus described the invention,What isclaimed as new is r In combination, a locking bar having a notch, a lock casing comprising two members, one of such members having a transverse groove or channel and alined recesses above and below such transverse groove and the other member having a vertical recess ex tending across the transverse groove and in communication at its end with the said re- O'opies of this patent may be obtained for cesses, a lock bolt arranged in thevsaid vertical recess and provided at itsends with lateral enlargements tofienter the" before mentioned recesses, one of such lateral en-" largements having a beveled end to project across the transverse groove and engage the v notch'of the lock bar. 7
