Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1915.
Application fled July 9, 1912. Serial No. 708,510.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. Mommas, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wyoming, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof and Waterproof Coverings and Processes of Making, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fire-proof and water-proof material and the process of making same and particularly to fire-proof and water-proof shingles.
The object of my invention is to provide a strong, durable, non-breakable and nonwarping water proof and fire proof covering which is adapted to be easily and conven iently applied.
My invention consists in a covering comprising an gbesmamilfiliga rgl ggturated and impregnated with wa er proo g material,
such as W. a it also consis s m e process of producing the same.
In the drawing which serves to illustrate my invention: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a piece of asbestos mill-board; and Fig. 2 is a view of the same after it has been saturated with candle tar or stearin pitch and ready for use.
The asbestos mill-board in its untreated or natural state is flexible, brittle and easily broken, the fibers being easily separated and the texture porous and somewhat open. In this condition the asbestos mill-board is immersed in a bath of heated candle tar, and allowed to remain there until it has become thoroughly saturated therewith. It is then removed from said bath, and any surplus of candle tar removed by compression or otherwise, as desired, after which it is allowed to cool and season, until it has become dry and ready for use. Ordinarily from twenty-four to forty-eight hours would be ample time for such seasoning preparatory for shipment and use, but the candle dizes, thereby ca 3-- WWwthMr elem resisting. 's gradual change will continue for a long period of time, thus gradually rendering the shingle more durable in use.
The asbestos mill-board is absolutely fireproof, and the saturation of the same with the candle tar and the subsequent oxidation of the latter extending throughout the structure of said mill-board renders the material water proof. The asbestos mill-board in its unsaturated state is non-combustible. The candle tar used in the saturation is combustible, but when the asbestos is impregnated with this candle tar, the resulting product is not combustible, since the candle tar cannot burn on account of the presence of the asbestos which retards any combustion whatsoever. The resulting product whether of shingles or coverings of larger size for roofing or other purposes, such as sidings for buildings, has ample strength and toughness for the purposes intended, and has sufficient flexibility to adapt it for nailing and closefitting either upon the studding or other structure or any uneven surface upon which it might be mounted.
This material can be substituted in place of corrugated or other sheet iron sidings or roofings, and completely resists the action of the atmosphere, so as not to require any protecting coatings, such as paint or other covering. It is also superior to slate on account of its non-breakable qualities. Furthermore, it is comparatively cheap to manufacture.
I claim:
1. An incombustible and waterproof article of manufacture, comprising an asbestos mill-board saturated with candle tar or stearin pitch, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
2. As an article of manufacture, an incombustible and waterproof shingle comprising an asbestos mill-board saturated and impregnated with candle tar or stearin pitch, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
3. The herein described process which consists in saturating and impregnating asbestos mill-board with candle tar and allowing the same to season whereby it becomes tough and hard and both incombustible and waterproof, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
4. The herein described process which consists in saturating and impregnating asbes- 5 tos mill-board with heated candle tar, compressing the sheet to remove excess of candle tar and to produce a closer union of the fibers to the saturant, then cooling the same and allowing it to season by oxidation, whereby it becomes tough and hard and in- 10 combustible and waterproof, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
