Specification of Letters Iatent.
' Patented May 25,1a1e.
Application flied January 27, 1911. Serial No. 605,070.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON B. Warmer, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sealing Means for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to in sealing means for boxes, and t e like, 1n flaps or similar devices ermanently fastened together by mechanica means, thus dispensing with the use of glue or other adhesive substance.
The present application, while presenting an improvement on Letters Patent Np. 915,894, granted to me, March 16, 1909, is, at the same time, a divisional art of asphcation Serial No. 538,777, file in the S. Patent Office January 18, 1910, granted February 14, 1911, No. 984,404.
It is an object of my present 1n vent1on to provide a fastening for. a box which it is impossible to open without destroymg a portion of the box, thereby defacing the package so that the opening of the same is readily detected.
In the accompanying drawings :-F1 re 1 is a perspective view showing the en of a box with my improvement applied, Fig. 2 is a View in erspective of't e members of the metal sea showing them slightly separated, and Fig. 3 is a section through t e metal seal showing a manner in which its an im rovement members may be permanently fastened togcther.
The seal comprises two sheet metal screwthreaded caps 7 and 8, the inner cap of which has an open top 9 to facilitate inserting it through the orifices 0, 6, in the flaps 3, 3, of the box or other object to be fastened together. The fact that the inner member has an 0 en top 9 affords a means for inserting t e finger therethrough to pull the inner member or cap in position in the orifice in the flaps, as indicated in Fi 1, which could not be done convenientl i the member were made solid. After eing thus inserted and the parts assembled, the outer cap 8 is screwed on the inner cap and punched through, as at 10, by means of a tool provided especially for the purpose, to prevent the caps being subsequently unscrewed, thus forming a permanent seal at each endofthe box-if applied to a boxor for holding flaps or other means securely fastened to ether so that they cannot be separated without destro ing the entire closure. The out-turned anges 11, 11, bear upon the upper and lower surfaces of the members be between them, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, thus clamping them securely together. In this way a simple and effectual means for quickly fastening and permanently sealing the arts is provided.
It is evident that slig t changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departure from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited E0 the exact construction herein 'set forth,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. The combination with a box rovided with a lurality of overlapping ups for closing t e box, said flaps having superposed orifices therein, of a seal comprising two hollow caps havin spiral corrugations formin screw threa s, one of said caps having a ange at one end and an opening at the op osite end, said flanged cap constructed an adapted to be removably inserted through the superposed orifices with the flange within the box by inserting a finger through the opening at the outer end of the cap said corru ations enga ing the edges of tlie flaps and ocking the ups to the cap, and the other cap screwed on the protruding end of the flanged cap for fastening the flaps together.
The combination with a box rovided with a'plurality of overlapping 'aps for closing the box, said flaps aving superposed oriiices therein, of a seal comprising two hollow caps having spiral corrugations formin screw threads, one of said caps having a ange at one end and an opening at the opposite end, the flan e adapted to engage the inner surface of t e innermost flap, said corru ations engaging the edges of the flaps and ocking the flaps to the cap, and the other cap screwed onto the protruding end of the flanged cap for fastening the flaps together between the caps.
33. The combination with a box ups for ing end of the flanged cap for fastening the flaps together'hetween the caps, said caps punched through the side when together to prevent their being disconnected.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signa- 15 ture, in the presence of two witnesses.
, HARRISON B. WALTER. Witnesses: v
