To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALVA C. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land-Drains, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to land drains with special reference to the drain set out and described in Letters Patent granted and issued to Erastus W. Appelmen, for land drain, dated the 23rd day of January 1912, and numbered 1,015,530 and the object of my invention is to improve the invention set out in said Letters Patent by providing means for supporting the drain head and relieving the pressure on the vertical drain pipe and still maintaining the connection of the drain pipe with the head.
The following specification will fully point out, describe and illustrate in what it. consists, the manner of constructing and assembling and the mode of operation, whereby the foregoing object and others asso ciated therewith are accomplished.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the drain head and the vertical drain when in position in the ground. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the head without the cover or surrounding casing. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the surrounding casing or fender. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the head taken on the line of X-X of Fig. 1.

1n constructing and assembling drains of this nature there is first dug an opening in the ground extending out in this case to the line 2 and in the center of this opening is another opening which extends down into porous or water bearing earth designated as 3. In this opening 8 is sunk drain tiles 5, set one upon another and extending down and leaving a space 4 at the bottom, for the purposes hereinafter to appear. On the top of theupper tile 5 is set a base 6, which is preferably of circular form and extends out some distance around the opening 3 and rests upon and is sustained on the ground, and is provided with an opening that registers with the drain 5. To this base 6 is secured a drain head 8 which may be cast integral with the base 6. Also there is connected with the base 6 and drain head 8 Specification of Letters Patent.

preferably three standards 10. These standards may also be cast integral with the tile and the base and extend some distance above the top of the drain head 8.
Surrounding the drain head 8 and the standards 10 is a casing or soil fender 12, which preferably rests upon the feet 14 of the standards 10. The base 6 may be of such dimensions as to extend to the line 2 and also the feet 1% may extend the same distance and the casing 12 may be of such dimensions as to compass the entire space and extend out to the line 2, but still rest upon the feet 14 of the standards 10. Over the top of the head and resting upon the standards 10 or the soil fender 12 is a cover 15, which is preferably made in a horizontal plane on its base and describes the arc of a sphere over the top and the edges 16 extend out as far as the line 2.
In order to hold all of the parts together until they have settled firmly in the ground, there is a wire 20 passed down and under the lower tile 5 and brought up on the outside and twisted around the wire 20 between the two lower tiles. There is one on each side that passes up through the cover and the two wires are twisted together at the top. This holds suspended the tiles 5 leaving a space at the bottom for the purpose of any collection of substance that may have passed down the drain and also affording a place for the disposal of the water when the drain head is being rapidly filled.
In the practical operation of my device the water is filtered into the space around the soil fender 12 and up under the fender into the space between the fender and the drain head 8 and over into the drain head down through the tiles 5 and into the space 4.
It will be seen that by this mode of constructing the head with a large base and securing the drain head to the base and also tying the tiles to the cap that there will be no weight upon the drain pipes and if the base should settle there would leave no space between the base and the drain pipe to admit the soil and if some soil did by any means get into the drain pipe there would be sufficient space at the bottom 1 to dispose of it or to dispose of a very large flow of water at any one time. It will further be seen that since the drain head is secured to the base that the Water must pass over the top of the drain head and not between the drain head and the base. 7
Having now described my invention What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, a drain sunk in the ground to porous earth, a supporting base resting on the ground over the drain and provided With an opening therethrough that registers With the drain in the ground, a drain head secured to the base around the opening in the base, standards secured to the head, a soil fender around the standards, and a cap resting on .a drain sunk in the ground to porous earth,

4. In a device of the character described, a drain sunk in the ground, a supporting base resting on the ground and provided with an opening that registers with the drain, a drain head integral With the'base and set over the opening in the base, standards integral with the base and drain head and provided With feet, a soil fender surrounding the standards and drain head and resting on the feet of the standards, a cap resting on the standards and soilfender and projecting beyond the. soil fender and means for securing together the cap, and the drain.
5.- In a device of the character described, a drain composed of lengths of tiling set one upon another sunk in an opening in the ground, a supporting base resting on the ground over the drain and provided With an opening that registers With the drain, a drain head secured to the supporting base, standards secured to the drain head, a soil fender around the drain head and standards, a cap resting on the standards and means for suspending the drain tiles from the cap and leaving an open space at the bottom of the opening in the ground.
6. In a device of the character described,
a drain sunk in the ground to porous earth, a foundation resting on the ground over the drain, a drain section resting on the founda tion and providing Water communications with the drain through the foundation, a tube or column encircling the drain section with water communications under the tube and into thedrain section, and a' cover over the tube. a foundation resting on the ground provided I with an opening through its central portion registering With the drain in the ground, a drain pipe section resting on the foundation and registering with the opening through the foundation, a column around the drain pipe, means resting on the foundation for supporting the column above the foundation to allow the Water to pass up under the column, and into the drain pipe, and a cover over the drain and column, and sustained by the foundation.
