IMPROVEMENT IN COOPERS CROZE.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOSEPH F. APPLEGA'TE and GASPAR FEIOCK, of New Albany, in the county o1 Floyd and in the'State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooper- Croze; and do hereby declare that the following is 'a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.

The nature of our invention consists in certain improvements upon the Coopers cro'ze for which Letters Patent were granted to Applegate, Jacobs 85 Roby February 2S, 1871, and which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed d'rawing,'in which- Figure 1 is a side view, and

Figure 2 is a bottom View.

A represents the plate, and

B the head-block, with its V-shaped rib a.

In this case we attach the head-block to the plate by means of bolts and nuts, and interpose between them a wooden raising-block, b, of any desired thickness, so as to use the same croze or toolfor any sized chime or barrel, from the shortest to the longest.

On the inner side of the head-block B is a permanent bar, C, throughwhich the screw D passes for fastening the knife; but instead of the metal block fastened by two screws, as in the patent above referred to, we use a small wooden block, el, which tits within the V-shaped bit or knife E, and against which the screw D works, thereby perfectly fastening the bit, and `at the same time preventing any shavings from passing in between the bit and the block, which was almost always the difficulty in the former case.

The opening in front of head-block is also made larger to allow chips or shaviugs to come out freely, and the ends of the bead or rib a are rounded, as shown at 1', t', lig. 2.

Having thus fully described our invention,

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The head-block -B, with cross-bar C, in combination with screw D, wooden block d, and bit E, all constructed and arranged substantially, as and for the Jpurposes herein set forth.

2. The combination of the head-block B with crossbar C, screw D, wooden block tl, bit E, raising-block b, and plate A, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
