MARBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Then, in the county of Herkimer, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in MusicLeaf Turners; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in music leaf turners.

The principal object is to provide a simple, compact, and comparatively inexpensive device of this character which can be easily attached to the music shelf of a piano, and which is easy of operation to turn the leaves of sheet music.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my music leaf turner. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the music leaf turner. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents a block which forms the base of my music leaf turner, this base having secured to each of its ends the hook-shaped flat springs 11, these springs being secured to the block near the rear edge thereof by means of the screws 12, the forward portion of the spring carrying a set screw which bears with its lower end against the head of a metal fastener 14 countersunk in the said block. The under side of the block 10 is provided with a felt or rubber facing 15 to protect the varnished surface of the piano. By means of the screw 13 the hooked end of the spring can be raised or lowered to effectively clamp the block to the music shelf. Secured on the upper face of the block 10 is a metal plate 16, and journaled at their lower ends in this plate are the vertical parallel shafts 17 and 18. The lower end of the shaft 17 has keyed thereon the pinion 19 which is engaged by a sliding rack bar 20 mounted in a suitable guide 21 on the plate 16, the forward end of said rack bar being provided with a thumbbutton 22. The lower end of the shaft 18 is provided with a pinion 23 engaged by the bar 24:, also slidably mounted in a guide 25 carried by the plate 16. The upper end of Specification of Letters Patent.

each of the shafts 17 and 18 is journaled in a plate 26 disposed aboveand parallel with the base 10, these shafts being suitably held in the plate 26 by means of the nuts 27. On the upper end of the shaft 17 below the plate 26 is a pinion 28, while on the shaft 18 is secured a pinion 31. Extending vertically between the shafts 17 and 18 is a rod 3 1, this rod being secured at its upper and lower ends, respectively, in the plate 26 and the plate 16. Carried by this rod 3 1 is an elongated spring pressed clip 35, this clip being adapted to hold the hinged portion of the sheet of music. Loosely rotatable on the upper end of the rod 34 are the pinions 36 and 37 which mesh, respectively, with the before-mentioned pinions 2S and 31 carried by the shafts 17 and 18. Secured to the pinion 36 is an outwardly extending leaf turning arm 29 which carries org its outer end portion a spring pressed music leaf engaging clip 30. The pinion 37 also has secured thereto a leaf turning arm 32 similar to the arm 29 and carrying a music leaf clip 33.

In the use of the device, the block 10 is rested on the ledge of the music shelf of the piano and the hook end of the spring 11 engaged under said ledge, after which the screw 13 is rotated to draw the hooked end of the spring upwardly so that the block will be tightly clamped to the shelf. The rack bars are in normal outwardly extended position so that the music turning arms 29 and 32 are both on the right-hand side of the device. The hinged portion of a piece of sheet music is then clamped between the edges of the clamp 35, and the upper edges of the inner pages of the music engaged with the clips 30 and 33. Upon pushing in the rack bar 20, the shaft 17 will be rotated to cause the pinion 28 to turn the pinion 36 and swing the arm 29 with its attached page to the left. Then upon pressing in the rack bar 24, the pinion 31 will cause the rotation of the pinion 37 and the swinging of the arm 32 to the left.

To reset the arms, it is only necessary to pull out the rack bars so that the gears rotate in an opposite direction and swing the arms 29 and 32 to their normal position, that is to the right.

What is claimed is:

A music leaf turner comprising a base adapted to be supported on the music shelf of a piano, vertical shafts journaled in the the loosely rotatable pinions, and a clamp carried by the vertical bar for holding the hinged portion of a piece of sheet music.
