. 11 FIG. 1
Jr J J m J 4 J ,-5 10 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
HENRY C. TOWNER, OF IBELLAIRE, OHIO.
MUSIC-LEAF TURNER.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY C. TowNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bellaire, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music- Leaf Turners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawin This invention relates to music leaf turners, and my invention aims to provide a de- Vice that can be used in connection with a music rack, piano or other musical instrument for safely supporting sheets of music whereby the same can be expeditiously shifted or turned, to permit of a musician or player properly interpreting the piece or score of music without interruption, as occurs in the majority of cases, where a sheet or page of music must be fingered and turned.
My invention further aims to provide a music leaf turning device that is furnished with an adjustable music sheet support that permits of a sheet of music being properly positioned whereby it can be gripped and easily turned.
My invention further aims to accomplish the above results by a simple, durable, inexpensive structure that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a music leaf turning device in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of a sheet clasp, Fig. at is a perspective View of the same, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one end of a sheet support.
A music leaf turning device in accordance with this invention comprises longitudinal parallel channel frames 1 and 2, connected by end bars 3, intermediate bars 4 and spaced apart central bars 5 and 6 that have offset portions 7 provided with alining slots 8. Arranged between the upper ends of the bars 5 and 6 are spacing blocks or bearings 9 for a vertical shaft 10 that extends through the channel bar 1. The upper end of the shaft 10 is provided with a crank 11 and connected to the outer end of the crank, as at 12 is a holder 18 of a clasp, comprising two gripping arms 14 held normally closed by a coiled compression spring 15 interposed Specification of Letters Patent.

between the upper ends of the arms 14. This clasp is of the ordinary and well known type and it can be opened and then released to grip the upper edge of a sheet or page of music 16.
Adjacent to the lower end of the shaft 1.0 is a horizontal beveled gear wheel 17 which is fixed upon the shaft and extends through the slots 8 of the central bars 5 and 6. Meshing with the beveled gear wheel 17 is a beveled segment rack 18 that is pivotally mounted, as at 19 upon the front side of the bar 5. The segment rack 18 has a handle 20, and by swinging said handle to the right or left the crank 11 of the shaft 10 can be swung from the left hand side of the device to the right hand side thereof, or vice versa.
The elcn'ients 1 to 6 inclusive constitute a rectangular frame and the end bars 3 of said frame are provided with racks 21 for supporting a ledge or support 22 longitudinally of the frame, whereby a sheet or page of music can be placed in front of the frame to be turned by the mechanism previously described. The support 22 has each end thereof provided with an opening 23, whereby it can slide upon the end bar 3. The end of the support has a groove 21 providing clearance for the rack 21 and in communication with said groove is an opening 25 that receives a spring pressed dog 26 pivotally mounted upon lugs 27, carried by the support 22. A flat spring 28 is secured to the end of the support to engage the dog and hold the same in engagement with the rack 21. It is through the medium of the spring pressed dogs and the racks that the support 22 can be raised and lowered relatively to the frame of the device.
It is thought that the utility and manner of operating the device will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fallwithin the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A. music leaf turning device comprising a frame including a pair of parallel central bars, one arranged forwardly of the other, a shaft journaled in the bottom bar of the frame arranged between said central bars and projecting above the top bar of the frame and provided with a crank, it clasp connected to and arranged forwardly of the free end of said crank, said central bars near their lower ends offset to provide alining slots, a horizontally disposed beveled gear carried by said shaft and projecting through said slots, at segment-shaped rack pivotally connected to the front cen- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
