T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SARAH E. HALL, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Gear, of which the following, taken in connection with the drawings, is a description.

My invention has for its object the production of a head gear, more specifically of a type forming a combined bonnet and hat, or construction that may be changed from a bonnet to a hat and vice versa.

A further object of my invention is to provide a head gear of the class described which is so constructed and arranged that the size of it is easily and quickly adjustable to different sized heads, or to fit heads having a large or small amount of hair.

A further object of my invention is to provide a head gear which is adapted to be adjusted to fit over the head as a bonnet covering the back of the neck of the wearer,

and by adjusting as hereinafter described it may be changed to form a hat of the turban type.

With these and other objects in view I have illustrated what I now consider the preferred form of my construction, although many of the details thereof may be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention, and in these drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the completed bonnet; Fig. 2 is a similar view with a section broken away to illustrate the separate inner crown; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the construction after being folded and adjusted as a hat; Fig. 4: illustrates the preferred shape of the front or stiffened portion of the head piece; Fig. 5 is a'plan view of the crown and neck piece; and Fig. 6 is a view of a separate'inner head covering detached from the bonnet.

In the form of head gear or bonnet which I have illustrated in the drawings, I require a head piece or foundation A preferably of any suitable stifi material, such as canvas or the like, which is shaped as shown in Fig. 4. This head piece is preferably wider across the center than at theends thereof as shown, and is out long enough on the sides to fit over the top of the head of the wearer and extend below the ears. This head piece is covered on both sides with any kind of material desired and trimmed as may suit the fancy of the wearer.: As illustrated in the drawings, this head piecehas a smoothcovering for the body portion a, and is prov vided with a shirred edge a, which may be of dili'erent material, and forms a suitable trimming for the bonnet. The head piece is provided with eye-lets 0L2, passing through the head piece and its'covering material for the purpose of securing the covering to the head piece and also as a means' of ventila tion. Detachably secured to this head piece are the outer and inner crowns B, B, each of which is formed of a single piece of ma- I terial as illustrated in Fig. 5, of practically the same shape, with the exception that the inner crown is shorter at the bottom than the outer crown which is provided with a neck piece 6 and the outer crown is preferably made larger. Each of these crowns is gathered around the curved edge. b to fit the contour of the head piece A, and" is preferably secured thereto by detachable fasteners 5 which permit itto be readily removed when found desirable. Both-the outer and inner crowns are shirred or gathered across the lower part thereof as atc to fit the back of the neckof the person. V

The outer crown B is provided with .a short neck piece or skirt Z1, which is preferably an extension of the outer crown, which forms a protection from the sun at the back of the neck of the wearer.

A loop O extends angularly across the 7 lower ends of the head piece at each side thereof and is adaptedto receive the ends,

of a veil whichmay 'be'worn to protect the face of the wearer, or-to trimthe bonnet as desired. I I 1 A neck band D is detachably' secured at each end thereof to the head piece on each side of the bonnet and is adapted to be worn at the back of the neck to hold the crown B and the neck piece 6 firmly in place, or by unfastening one end thereof the wearer may pass the hand through the loops C and under the chin and secure it in place on the opposite side thereof, bringing the head covering closer to the face of the wearer to better protect the face of the wearer from wind, dust, dirt, .etc. The outer crown B may be drawn under the band D when worn at the back of the neck to bring the crown closer to the head. 7

The outer and inner crowns B, B, are 7 provided with a pluralilty of bands 6,6, 6

which may be arranged in any manner desired, and inside of which is provided a tape, elastic or cord, 6 which may be drawn through the same to adjust the size of the crown larger or smaller as desired, to fit the head of the wearer. This adjustment is accomplished by simply tightening the tape and securing it in a knot to hold it in the proper position.

Upon the lower outer corners of the head piece is a fastening device f, which is adapted to engage its companion piece f, when the outer rim A of the head piece A is folded to the position shown in Fig. 3 to convert the bonnet into a turban or hat. The rim of the head piece A being turned upwardly as shown in Fig. 3, forms the rim of the hat, the neck piece I) is also turned upwardly andthe shirred strip D is drawn across it and fastened on the opposite side to hold it in position, forming the front of the turban.

A crown may be adjusted to a smaller size if desired by drawing the cords e closer together until the crown is adjusted to the proper size. This change of form may be easily and quickly made and converts the construction into a Very neat and convenient hat, and one which can be as quickly and conveniently changed to a bonnet when the wearer desires.

In Fig. 6 I have shown a detached head covering to be worn inside of the bonnet to protect the hair from the dust and dirt. This covering F may be made of the same material as the bonnet and is provided with darts F across the front side to bring the covering down over the forehead and to fit closely around the face. The sides 9, g, are elongated to cover the ears. Cords g, preferably of elastic, are secured to the sides and ends of the covering and extend around the head of the wearer to hold the same in place when worn.

I claim:

1. A head gear comprising a head piece formed of suitable stiffening material an adjustable detachable crown secured to said head piece, and an adjustablezband secured to the ends of the head piece and adapted to be worn at the front or back of the neck of the wearer, substantially as described.

2. A head gear comprising a head piece formed of suitable stifiening material, the

edge of which is adapted to be turned or rolled upon itself to form a hat rim, an outer and an inner adjustable crown detachably secured to said head piece, and a neck band having the ends thereof secured at each end of the head piece, substantially as de scribed.

3. A head gear comprising a head piece formed of stifiening material, an outer and an inner crown detachably secured to said head piece, and means for increasing or decreasing the size of said crowns, substantially as described.

' 4. A head gear comprising a head piece formed of suitable stiffening material, an adjustable crown detachably secured to said head piece, said crown formed with an elongated portion forming the neck piece in the bonnet and an upturned front when converted into a hat, and an elastic band extending across the same and holding it in place, substantially as described.

5. A convertible head gear having a head piece formed of suitable stiffening material, an adjustable crown detachably secured thereto, the edge of said head piece adapted to be rolled or turned upon itself to form the rim of a hat, and means for securing said rim in upturned position, substantially as described.

6. A convertible head gear having a head piece formed of suitable stiffening material and adapted to be rolled or turned upon itself to form the rim of a hat, an adjustable crown secured thereto, and a detachable inner head covering, shaped to fit closely to the features of the wearer, substantially as described.
