ALEXANDER H. oARsON, OE NEWPORT, RHODE isLAND, AND ANDREW BROWN, OE rrROY, NEW YORK.
Specilication forming part of Leiters Patent No. l l3,979, dated Api-i125, lS'l.
.To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, ALEXANDER I-I. CAR- SON, of Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, and ANDREW BROWN, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baby-Tender or Infant Gymnasium 5 and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in whichrIlhe ligure is a detail View of our improved baby-tender, partly in section, to show the construction.
Our invention has for its object to furnish an improved device for holding an infant so that he will be securely supported in such a way as to encourage him to exercise his limbs, the apparatus enabling` him to move freely in any direction, and which shall at the same time be simple in construction and convenient iu use; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a large ring or hoop, to which are attached the lower ends of four or more ropes, chains, or cords, B, the ripper ends of which are attached to a small plate, C, which is swiveled to the lower end of a short chain, D, the uppercnd of which is hooked upon a hook, E, so that the said chain may be lengthened or shortened to adjust the apparatus to the4 size of the baby. The shank of the hook E passes in through the lower end of a cylindrical case, F, and to its end is attached the lower end of a strong coiled spring, G, the upper end of which is attached to the upper end of the cylindrical caseF or to the shank of a hook, II, which is designed to be hooked upon some suitable support in doors or out of doors, as maybe desired.
The case F is designed to cover and protect the spring G, and may be omitted, if desired.
To the ring or hoop A are attached the upper ends of four or more cords or chains, I, the lower ends of which are but-toned or otherwise attached to the waist of an open dress", J, which is designed to be hooked or buttoned around the waist of the child.
To the waist of the open dress J is attached one end of the seatcloth K, which is passed between the legs of the child, and its other or free end, or straps attached to its said end, are buttoned or hooked to the waist of the loose dress J, thus holding the child securely, and at the same time furnishing him with a comfortable seat in which he may sit and rest, and which will not impede the movement ofhis limbs. \Vhcn secured in this device, the child can jump up and down. and turn about in any direction, the springGand swiveled plate C allowing him to move freely, while the large ringor hoop Aprevents the possibility of the cords or chains becoming twisted or tangled.
Having thus described ou r invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved baby-tcnder consisting of the cloth seat K, open dress J, cords or chains I, large ring or hoop A, cords or chains B, swiveled plate C, adjustable chain D, hook E, coiled spring G, and hook H, whether the cylindrical` case F be used or not, said parts being constructed and arranged in connection with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
ALEXANDER II. CARSON. ANDREWT BROWN. Vitnesses:
GEORGE S. GARDNER, WM. S. LAWTON.
