' Application med-November17, 1913. serial No. 801,458.
To @ZZ 207mm it may concern.' Y i Be it known that I, CHARLES F. Sor-ILUETER,
a citizen .lof the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of klvlilwaukee and State of Wisconsin, yhave invented certain new andy useful Improvements in Extension-Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactl descriptionl thereof.
My invention refers to tables, ,its object being to 'provide a simple, economical andv effective self-contained extension*` table. The arrangement and construction' of the table is such that slidable endA leaves are adapted to be drawn out and effect a spring-` pressed joint with abutting edges of a vertically movable table-top, which top isA slightly lifted when it is desired to fold the leaves and, under such conditions the leaves are arranged to slide under the tabletop and form a permanent flat rest therefor in conjunction with "a fixedV guide-frame. Thus the extra leaves are concealed "when not in use and are at all times ,intact with the table, whereby the inconvenience of storing and adjusting detached leaves is avoided.
Vith the above objects 'in view the invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts as l1ere. inafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed. l
In the drawings Figure l represents a longitudinal sectionaly elevation of a table with leaves extended embodying the features Vof my invention, the section being indicated by line l-l of Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same with the table-top removed; Fig. 3, a side view yof said table showing the leaves contracted; Fig. 4, a detailed cross-section of a guide-frame, the section being indicated by line lf-Jl of Fig.
3, and Fig. 5, another detailedcross-section l showing a guide-rail and one of its',` supporting rests in connection with the table apron. f, Y
Referring by characters to the drawing, l, l, represent a set of table legs which are conf nected in the usual manner by end strips 2 and side strips 3 Jconstituting the table apron. The side strips 3 have secured thereto a transversely disposed guideframe,
which guide-frame comprises an anchon board 4f and a reach-board 5 that is spacedV from the anchor-board and secured'to spacing blocks 5 which, in turn, are fast to the side strips 3. The anchor-board of the transversely disposed guide-frame is provided with a centrally arranged slot ll, into which is loosely fitted a vertically movabler bloclr 6, the same being secured to the under side of, a table-topi. Hence it will be seen that the-table-top is capable of vertical shift and is otherwise `detached from the frameworl of the table.'v AThe end edges 7' of the tabletop are, as shown, preferably scrolled outwardly yto effect a matched joint with corresponding inwardly scrolled edges S of tableileaves 8, the said edges, as best shown in Fig; l, forming a flush lap joint in connection with the table top when the leaves are extended. Each leaf is supported in a horizontal plane upon a pair of `rails 9 havingtongues 9', each pair of said rails being adapted to slide in tongue and grooved rezero.; i

cesses l0 that are formed in the end strips 2.
Thepairs of rails are also obliquely disposed and inclined downwardly toward the center between which reach-board and the anchor board they are adapted to travel in oppositely inclined oblique planes. Each rail yhas secured thereto a one-piece brackety vll provided with outwardly extended 'apertured feet l1 for the reception of a plunger 12 having` a buer-head 12', which buerjuxtaposed end strip Qwhen the leaves are extended. VEach plunger carries a pin 13, be-
tween which and the inner bracket ear there is interposed a coiled spring 14 whereby the plungers. are maintained under spring pressure.
`When the table .leaves are extended as shown in Fig. l, itwill be observed that the table-top rests upon the anchor-board 4 of the guide-frame and that its end edges which are matched with the corresponding edges of the leaves rest 'upon the upper surfaces of the rails, whereby the table-top is firmly seated. It will also be observed that, prior to the jointy being effected between the table-top and leaves, vthe heads of the plungers engage the end strips 2 of the apron,
ywhereby the coiled springs are compressed IThe rails are also limited 9o head is adapted to engage the inner face of a out to permit theV table-toptoy `drop to itsV seat, the spring-controlled plungers will exert force to contractthe leaves, whereby a`constant pressure'is maintained at each joint Y and, owing tofthe overlapped engagement between the edges 8` of the leaves and the -the buffer-springs to open the joint between ltable edges 7, theV spring pressure also serves to hold the table-top securely in place. To contract the'leaves the operator first distends the leaves slightly inopposition to the table and after the table-top edge is exposed, the said top is tilted upwardly to v permit the juxtaposed leaf to slide thereunder, which initial movement is imparted to theaforesaid leaf by its spring connections. The joint of the opposite leaf is-then unlocked in a similar manner and it is apparent that at this time the tabletop is restinguponV the edgesand has been lifted from its seat upon the anchor-boardbut is re- Y,
nection with corresponding edges of the anchor-board7V in which position .the leaves will be' contracted withinthe area of vthe table-top, as shown in Fig. 3,1130 thus form In an lextension table having recessed end Y j strips,`pairs of Vrails infslidable union with the end strips the opposite pairs of rails having side faces in-sliding contact with each other whereby theyvare guidedfmeans for supporting the inner ends-of the rails,
a table leaf carried by each ofsaid rails', and a table-top arranged to be fitted between vthe leaves; kthe combination of brackets Vsecured Vto the outer. side faces of one pair of n the railsfandfto they inner side faces of the Ycompanionfpair fof rails, and spring-coinrv trolled plungers mounted in the brackets,
the opposite pairsrof said plungers beingy Y adapted to pass each other when the rails are contracted and to engage thev endstrips at four points when said rails are distended,
four points mentioned, f
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set Ymy hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of `Wisconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
