MADISON 1V1. KING, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK, ASSIG'NOR TO JOHN Q. A. WI'IITTEMORE AND CHARLES WHITTEMORE, BOTH 035 BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4., 1915.
Application filed Becember 22,1913. Serial No. 808,198.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MADISON M. KING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Box; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to box openers.
It particularly relates to openers which are secured to boxes for containing evaporative materials, and which are tightly sealed to prevent evaporation of the ingredients contained in the boxes. Such boxes are usually lacquered or enameled, which, taken together with the fact that the covers tightly fit upon the box, makes them very diflicult to open.
By my invention is provided a means whereby the covers may be opened notwithstanding the tight fit and the sealing effect of the paint, lacquer or enamel with which they may be coated.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box and opener containing. my invention. Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional view of a part of the box shown in Fig. 1. It also shows a top view of the opener. Fig. 3 illustrates a vertical sectional View of the part of the box shown in Fig. l, and shows the manner in which the opener operates upon the cover to start the cover from the box.
1, Fig. l, is the body of the box. 2 is the cover of the box. The body of the box is provided with the usual bead 3 and the cover of the box is provided with the usual flange 4. The cover 2 fits around the top of the body of the box and above the bead 3. The cover 2 is also provided with a flaring flange 5 located along the edge of the flange 4E. The opened 6 is pivoted to the body of the box 1 by means of the riveted pin 7. One end of the lever opener 6 is provided with a finger piece 8 against which the thumb or finger may be pressed in operating the opener 6. The other end of the opener 6 is provided with a sharpened corner 9. The inner side of the flaring flange 5,beingbellshaped, the sharpened corner 9 penetrates in between the flange 4t, and the body 1 of the box which causes the cover to loosen at this point. The sharpened corner 9 forms a starting wedge. The lever 6 is provided with an enlargement 10, which may be formed by turning up an ear from the lower edge of the opener 6 and flattening it against the side of the opener 6. The enlarged portion 10 provides along its edge a bearing surface 11 which presses against the flaring flange 5 of the cover of the box as the opener is further turned on its pivot by pressure on the finger-piece 8. The bearing surface 11 of the enlarged portion 10 of the opener 6 thus engages with the flaring part 5 of the flange 4, and pushes the cover from the box.
The construction shown and described may be greatly varied in the arrangements and manufacture of its parts and in the substitution of elements having equivalent functions without departing from the spirit of the invention, which is described in the claim in the language of the elements shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
In a box, the combination of the cover and the body of the box, the cover having a flaring flange, a level pivoted to the body of the box and having a wedge-shaped corner on the inner side of the lever for first penetrating between and separating the flange of the cover from the body of the box upon the movement of the lever and an abutting surface located beside the wedge-shaped corner for abutting the flaring portion of the flange of the cover of the box for lifting the cover relative to the body of the box upon a continued movement of the lever.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MADISON M. KING.
