To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Luann GENEVIEVE STEEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmg.

This invention relates to puzzles, and has for its object to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of such class in cluding a plurality of shiftable elements adapted to be housed to complete the representation of the head of a miniature figure. By way of example, a figure representing Humpty Dumpty sitting on a wall.

Further objects of the mvention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a puzzle which is simple in its construction and arrangement, durable, amusing, requiring a certain amount of dexterity for the purpose of housing the shiftable elements to complete the head of the miniature figure, readily set up and inexpensive to n'ianufacture.

l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come withinthe scope of the claims hereunto appended.

In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawing, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a base of plate like design having I a cylindrical block 2 secured to the central portion thereof and surrounding this block to rotate therearound and also resting on the base 1 is a ring member 3, the outer periphery of which is toothed or serrated as indicated at 4.

Secured to the upper face of the ring member 3 is a plate or the like 6 which forms the bottom of an inclosure, said plate being provided with a central opening through which the block 2 projects. Secured to the under face of said plate 6 immediately adjacent the outer peripheral edge thereof and arranged at predetermined points thereon are the lugs 9 to which are secured the upright supporting strips 8. These upright supporting strips project some distance above the plate 6 and have secured thereto a rim 7, the latter having its lower edge spaced slightly above the plane of the upper face of said plate 6, as clearly indicated in Figs. 2, 4 and 6 of the drawing The plate 6 which is rotatable, being mounted on the rotatable ring 3, forms with the rim therearound an inclosure or receptacle, the purpose of which will be hereinafter and more particularly set forth.

Secured to the upper face of the block 2 by means of fastening devices 12, the latter also securing said block to the base 1, is an additional plate member 10 which superposes the plate 6 and which is spaced from the latter as well as from the lower edge of the rim 7 as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 6 of the drawing. This latter plate 10 has a picture painted, drawn or otherwise inscribed thereon, the purpose of which being hereinafter set forth.

The base 1 may be designed rectangularly or otherwise, as desired, and arranged in connection therewith are the walls 28 which together with said base form a casing for the device. The top of this casing is designated in the drawing as 13 and is preferably formed of glass or other transparent material, so that the movable objects within the inclosure will be readily observed. This base plate 1 is also provided with two enlarged semi-circular openings 1% through which the fingers may be disposed to shift the movable elements of the device when desired. A rim or band 11 is also provided in connection with the walls 28 which forms an ornamental support for said transparent top 13.

Secured to the inner periphery of the rim 7 is a corrugated rim or band 1 1 and eX- tending inwardly therefrom at predetermined points are the projections 15, which may be said to be obstacles. The purpose thereof will be hereinafter more particu-- larly set'forth.

Mounted on the top face of the plate 10 is a block or the like 16 which is designed to represent a wall and formed integral with this block or otherwise supported thereon and arranged in a plane just abovethe upper face of the block 16 forming a wall is a plate like member 17 which is designed to represent the body of a miniature figure, such as Humpty Dumpty. A block'18 is also provided, the latter beingvdesigned to form an enlarged head member for the figure and secured to the body plate 17. This head member is held ,inposition' with respect to the wall 16 'by'means of a coil spring 20, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 8 of the drawing. The block 18 which forms this enlarged head is of a greater thickness than the block 16 representing the wall and thus thebody 17 of the figure has the appearance of sitting on the wall with the lower portion thereof projecting therefrom.

The block 18 which forms the head of the figure is provided with a vertical pocket or the like 21 which terminates at its outer end in an angular recess 22. A globularmember 27 is provided within the inclosure and adapted for reception in the pocket 21, the same being shown in Fig. 3 as resting against the corrugated rim 14 The portion of the block 18 which is cutaway to form the recess 22 is separated into a series of shiftable elements as indicated by the reference characters 23, 24, 25 and 26, and when these elements are shifted in place with respect'to one another and with respect to the recess 2-2, the head of the miniature figureis completed, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Itis the object of the puzzle to position these shiftable elements in such position with respect to one another as to complete 7 the formation of the head of the figure. In

order to aid in this respect and also to form obstacles in the working of the puzzle are the deflectors 15, heretofore referred to. The globular member 27 would 'of course 7 also aid inshifting the elements for solving the puzzle. In order to 'solve the puzzle, the member 27 is first shifted into the pocket 21, after which the elements 23, 24:, 25 and 26 are shifted about over the plate 10 to enter the recess 22 in proper relation to one another.

W' hat I claim is 1. A puzzle comprising a resiliently connected miniature figure having its head cut away to provide a recess, supporting means for said figure, and a series of shiftable elements adapted to be housed in saidrecess to complete the head of said figure. 1
