To oil whom it m 11?/ concern lie it known that I, OTTO PETERM'ANN, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, and ay resident of Groton, county of Tompkins, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typelvlriting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates more particularly to parts of the platen shift mechanism of visible or front strike typewriting machines in which the platen and carriage are adapted to be folded forward over the keyboard.
(lne of the principal objects of the invenm tion is to provide simple and etfective brackets ordevices which may be made from sheet steel or other metal in such a way that the same may be properly secured to the machine frame at thev corners thereof and which serve to guide parts of the platen shift mechanism.
Another object of the invention is to provide a typewriting machine having a twopart foldable support, each part comprising a plurality of members on one part of which the carriage is mounted, the other part being connected to the platen shift mechanism, and means whereby the members of one part of the support as well as parts mechanism may be adjusted and held in such adjusted position to permit the members of the two-part support to be properly held relatively to eachother in order that the parts may be folded freely and properly. l
A further object of the invention-is to provide means whereby parts of a foldable support may be quickly adjusted and such means made to form a part of a substantially rectangular and rigid frame in order that/the carriage may be uniformly moved and held at opposite sides of the machine when shifted to permit different characters to be printed as is usual in machines of this class.

YWith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with `reference to the accompauving drawings7 which form a part of this specification. and will then be pointed 'out in the claims atthe' ,end o' the description.

While the invention is shown as applied more particularly to a machine in which the carriage and its bed may be folded forwardly over the keyboard or otherwise shifted to make the machine more compact when not in use, it will be understood that the invention may bey applied equally to a machine that does not fold or is otherwise constructed.
The frame 10 may be of a single piece of aluminum or other sheet metal and has the sides 11 and the rear connecting part or member 12. A rod 13 extends transversely of the machine between the sides 11 and to this rod is held one or more shift levers 1l. Only one shift lever 1l is employed though ordinarily in machines of this class two are used to adapt the platen to assume three different positions. The lever 14 is connected to a transverselyl extending rod 15 and this rod is rigidly held at its ends to slides or members 16. There are two slides 16 located on opposite sides of the machine and the upper ends of these slides are rigidly held to the bars or members `17 forming a part of a foldable support 18. A bar or member 19 somewhat longer than the laars 17 is arranged in parallel relation with each of the arms or bars 1T when the machine is in normal working position and at one end is pivotecL as at 20. to the arm 1T. An internally7 threaded sleevev or adjusting member 29 engages the threaded end 3() of the rod 24 and is adjustab'le lengthwise of the rod, and said sleeve may be rotated on said rod either with the fingers or by inserting a tool in one or more Iopenings 31 provided for that purpose. By this means the rod :24 may be quickly lengthened or shortened Without any special fitting of the rod and the arms 19 of the foldable support may be thus spread to adapt the vsame to be properly positioned relatively to the arms 17 in order that the said arms 19 with the carriage may fold properly.

The purpose of this slot is to permit the diameter of the threaded end 30 of the rod to be increased in order to make a very tight fit 'with the sleeve 29 when the rod Vis/taken from the machine; Thus if occasion arises to take out some of the mechauism, and to do this it becomes necessary to remove the rod 24, the sleeve being tight on the'rod would not disturb the adjustment and in reassemliling no readjustment of the sleeve 29 would be required. It willbe evident that the slides 16, rod 15 and rod 24, together with the arms 17, form a rigid and substantially rectangular frame, in order that the carriage may have a uniform vertical movement and be properly supported at both sides 'of the machine.

From the foregoing, it will be manifest that Simple and efficient means is provided whereby a part of the platen shift mecha- ,nism is properly guided; that said guiding means is simple in construction and forms etlective means for bracing the frame and for guiding parts of the platen shift mechanism; and that simple means is provided whereby a two-part oldable support may have its members properly adjusted and rigidly held in such adjusted position to adapted the support to fold properly and freely.
Having thus describedmy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. In a typevvriting machine, the combination of a support having a pair of arms, a carriage adapted to travel along said support, brackets having openings of relatively different sizes, -slides passing through the openings of the brackets and connected to the arms, means for adjusting the slides and arms in the direction of travel of the carriage, and means lfor moving said slides.

In a typevvriting machine, the combi1 nation of a carriage, a frame, a support. tor. the carriage movable above the frame, and brackets secured to the upper rear corners of the frame and each having'an overhanging portion provided with an opening one a slide con-i platen, a rod located at the lower partof the machine and rigidly holding the slides spaced apart, a second rod located at the upper part of the machine and connecting certain of the arms together, one end ct said rod being provided with a threaded recess and at the end being exteriorly threaded and l slotted, an internally threaded sleeve engaging the threaded end of the rod and adjustable lengthwise thereof, and screws engaging the threaded openings ot' the rod` and adapted to adjustably hold the arms and slides apart. 13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of asupporthaving a plurality of arms, a carriage mounted to move along said support, a platen mounted in the carriage,
two movable slides located at opposite sides of the machine and connected to two of the arms, a rod located at the upper part of the machine and having means connecting two of the arms together, one end of. said rod i being provided with a recess or opening and nation of a support,
at the' other end being exteriorly threaded and slotted and provided with a4 threaded opening, an internally .threaded sleeve en` gaging the threaded end of the rod and adiustable lengthwise thereof, and screws passthe upper and lower part ofthe machine and. rigidly forming therewith a substantiall holding the slides'spaced apart and rigid frame, one of said rods being provi ed with an adjustable end, and means for moving the slides.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a support, a carriage mounted to move along said support, a platen mounted in the carriage, two movable slides located at opposite sides of the machine and connected to move-the platen, at the upper and lower 4part of the machine, rigidly holding the slides spaced apart,form ing therewith a substantially rigid and rectangular frame, said upper rod having an adjustable sleeve at one end thereof, and means for moving the slides.
16` In a typewriting machine, nation of a support, a carriage mounted to move along said support, a platen mounted in the carriage, two vertically movable slides located at opposite sides of the machine and connected to move the platen, and rods located at the upper and lower part of the machine, rigidly holding .the slides forming therewith a rigid frame, one of said rods being adjustable, brackets located at the rear corners of the machine through which the slides pass, and means for moving the slides.

In a typewriting machine, the combinationI of a two part oldable support, each part comprising two arms, means for holding the arms in pairs, a carriage adapted to travel along the support and foldable with one part thereof, brackets having openings therein, slides-passing through and guided in theopenings of the brackets, means for moving the slides, and means whereby the arms of one partI of the support may be spread apart.
