Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1912.
Application filed September 23, 191-0. Serial No. 583,438.
To all whom it may concern: I
.Be it known that I, OTTO THIEME, a citizen of the United States, residing'at St.
Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tally-Roll At tachments for, Type-\Vriting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is'a front elevational view of my device as applied to an ordinary typewriter. Figs. 1 and 1 are modified views of the operating levers. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Figs. 3, 4, and 6 illustrate details of construction.
My invention relates to an improvement in adjustable tally roll attachment for typewriting machines. It is. of advantage in a mercantile establishment to make out a tally roll or sheet simultaneously with the ledger sheet. for a days work or longer.
It is my object to provide a very simple attachment to be applied to any ordinary form of typewriter, which attachment would properly feed such a roll to the platen of the typewriting machine.
Referring to the drawings 1 indicates generally the typewriting machine with an ordinary carriage 2 and platen Across the back of the carriage is mounted an ordinary rack bar 4, and in the front of the carriage is a square or rectangular supporting bar 5. These bars 4 and 5 extend across the carriage and are properly supported thereon. y
Slidably mounted on the bar 4 is a bracket 6 having an angular extension 7 carrying a rollsupport 8 with notches 9 at the top for the reception of a rod 10 upon which the paper roll 11 is mounted; The rod 10 is comprised ofa center portion having grooves 10 thereon at intervals near either end and is internally bored at either end' as Within either bore is slidabiy mounted a pin 13 grooved at 14 and with a knurl head 15.
In thebottom of the bore 12 and-bearing spring 16. The grooves 10 are provided to form a stop for collars 17 having spring actuated pawls 17 adapted to engage therein, mounted on either side of thc'roll 11 and the spring pins '13 provide .an adjustable bearing to be held in position in the support 8, the springs allowingof the extension and retraction of the ends of the rod 10 accord ing to the width of the support 8.
Suitably connected to the support 8, and the bracket 6 is a curved guard member 18, which is shaped to protect the tally sheet being unrolled from the roll 11, and passing over the members 7 and 6. As shown in Fig. 1 this guard member is slotted out to form three wings 19, 20 and 21, and a turn down part 22.-
Pivoted to the bracket 6 is a catch device 23 having a toothed portion 24 adapted to engage between the teeth of the rack 4. A sprlng 25 normally holds the teeth 24 in engagement with the rack. A handle 26 is attached to the outside of the pivot pin 27 of the catch 23 so that it may be easily turned.
Slidably mounted on the bar 5 is a bracket 28 forming a supportfor the feeding roll 29 rotatably mounted on a spindle 30 ournaled on the bracket. A suitable ratchet wheel 31 15 also fast on the spindle 30 at one end, and a pawl carrying arm 32 is loosely mounted on this spindle adjacent the ratchet wheel. This armcarries a pawl 33 held in engagement with the ratchet by means of a spring 34. The arm 32 is also provided with a promove this arm in opposition to the action of I the spring 38.
A leaf spring 42 is connected to the bracket 28 tobear against the end of the feeding roll 29 preventing excesslve rotation thereof. The slide bar 37 is connected to a lever 43 pivoted on the same pivot 44 as is theileve145, which ,actuates the ratchet wheel 46 on the platen Each of these levers is provided with a'projecting finger portion so that they may be independently operated iii-desired. The lever 43 is notched at. 47. for the receptionof a pin 48 attached to the lever 45. In the View shown in Fig. 1 the notch and. pin are on the right hand edge of the levers, and in the view shown in Fig. 1, the notch and pin are on the left hand-ofthe same levers.
30 tally sheet and'at' the same time on the book- The bracket 28 is slidably mounted on't he bar 5 by being shaped to engage at least two sides thereof, and beirf held in engagement therewith by means 0 ,an adjustable screw 49. Suitable paper guide fingers 50 and guiding devices 51- are applied to-the machine forthe protection of the "sheetsfed to the platen. p The paper roll 11 as illustrated inFig'. 1 is formed of strips of different color 52 and 7 53 as, for example, pink and yellow, so that 15' v paper fingers 5O and'around'the platen'with the credits may be listed' on the pink sh'eetv and the debits on the. yellow sheet. When the device is in use the ledger sheet is introduced in the ordinary manner under. the
the carbon'sheet between it and the tally sheet from ftheroll 11, the guard devices preventing'the sheets from becoming soiled,
.in passingto the platen. The tally roll attachment is adjustedso that the credit ordebit sheet, as desired, is in register with the proper column on the ledger sheet, and the figures properly entered onbo'th sheets simultaneously, then the-attachment is readjusted and another set of figures introduced on whichever side of the tally sheet it is desired and in v the proper column onthe ledger sheet. By this means the credits for the day and thedebits may be entered on the keeping sheet or ledger.
The platen is fed in the usual manner by means of the lever 45. and the eeding roll '29 by means of the lever 43 th ough' connection with the sliding rod '37 acting on the, tail of the pawl carrying arm 32. Provisionis made in the link 37 foradjustment of the tally roll laterally-of the carriageby a slot and screw construction, by
V which the length of the link may be changed v as desired.
When the lever 43 is operated in the construction shown in Fig. 1 it also operates 'lever43 maybe operated independently of the lever 4;5 to rotate the feed roll, but when the lever A5 is operated it also simultane-jouslyv operates the lever a3 and, therefore,
f boththe feed roll and platen are rotated together. If desiredthe pin 48 could be made removable and the lever 43 provided with two slots as 'shownin Figs- 1 and 1, so that' ently of each other.
either of these operations could be produced on the same machine, or the pin could be removed and both levers operated independam aware that minor changes-may be made in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts as illustrated and described without departing from thespirit of myfinvention, the scopeof'which is indi cated in the accompanying claims.
I claim: p v 1.- A tally roll 'attachment'comprising a means on the roll support for engaging the rack bar, and means on the feeding device for engaging the additional bar, both of said latter means permitting lateral. adjustment of the tally roll support and feeding means.
2'. A tally roll feeding-means comprising a feeding roll with ratchet attached, a bracket forming a :support for the roll adapted to be laterally adjustable on a bar, a ratchet pawl carrying arm adapted to actuate the ratchet having a projecting portion, a slide bar adapted to engage with said projectingportion of the. arm to operate. the pawl. I
