York, have invented a certain new and use-- ful Improvement in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to visible writing machines and its object is to provide means for holding and controlling cards and duplicate billing sheets.
A typewriting machine equipped with improvements forming the subject matter of the present invention and hereinafter described may receive a sheet of paper upon or outside of which cards or other sheets may be fed, written upon and discharged from the machine; and upon the first named sheet may be written records or totals of items printed upon such successive cards or sheets.
The invention may in some respects and from some points of view he considered an improvement upon Letters Patent of the United States, No. 950,326, granted February 22, 1910, upon my application. It is, however, not in all respects dependent upon the construction of said patent.
The invention is shown as applied to a Royal Standard typewriting machine.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of the right hand end of the carriage: Fig. 2, a like view with the parts in different position: Fig. 3, a top plan of the carriage; and Fig. 4, a front elevation.
The feed devices and means for throwing them off are such as shown in my Letters Patent No. 865,892 granted September 10, 1907 and need no special description or de tail illustration.
The side plates 1 of the, carriage are con-- boss 8 forming a front stop. The release lever is shown in normal position in Fig. 1.
VVh'en it is drawn forward, the-cammed rock shaft 6 is partially rotated and the front and rear feed rolls are released or moved away from the platen. If there is used in conjunction with the feed rolls a scale bearmg against the platen and located below the printing line thereon provision may be made for moving the scale bar either away from the platen or to the printing line when the feed rolls are released. Such scale bar may or may not be used'in connection with the present invention. "At each side of the machine there is a forwardly projecting arm 9 pivoted on the side plate and projecting forward over the platen. These arms are cross connected at their front ends by a rod 10 carrying paper clamping or feed rolls 11 that bear upon theplaten above the printing line. Springs 12 are applied to the arms 9 just in front of their pivots and tend by their reaction to hold the rolls 11 against the platen. identical with that shown in the before mentioned patents except that the springs 12 are coiled expansion springs connected at one end to the arm 9 and at the othervend to an anchorage on the side plate. The disposi tion of the spring with respect to the arm 9 and its axis is such that the bail formed by the arms 9 and the connecting rod 10 may be lifted and turned back; and when the line in which the spring lies passes behind the axis 13, the bail will be held in retracted or inoperative position as shown in dotted lines Fig. 1. The arrangement is substantially construction'between what is shown in that patent and the construction shown in the present application exceptin the spring devices for holding the rolls 10 or 11 againstthe face of the platen and permitting the entire bail to be thrown backwardly and remain in inoperative position.
There have now been described old devices in connection or association with which the present invention is disclosed in this application.
The invention comprises the application to a visible fwriting machine of a supplementary bail 14. disposed' above the front portion of the surface of the platen and carried by the main or first mentioned bail.
The normal position isshown in Fig. 1 and the position the supplementalbail assumes 1126 when a card is to be inserted, say from the front of the machine, is shown in Fig. 2. It is mounted as follows: On the shaft or bail member carrying rolls 11 are upright arms 15 fixed with respect to the arms 9. The side portions 14, of supplemental bail 14, extending at right angles from the horizontal portion 14 of the bail, are'turned outwardly at right angles to form crank or wrist ends 14 that have bearings in aper tures in the upright arms 15. At the right hand end of bail 14 the crank portion 14 is elongated and receives a collar 16 attached to it by a set screw 17. Rigidly secured to the collar is a downwardly extending arm 18 to the lower end of which is pinned a rearwardly extending rod 19, the rear end of which passes through an aperture in the offset part 20 of the pivot arm 9 and has applied to its threaded end a stop nut 21 that limits its forward movement. Between the offset 20 and a lateral projection 22 on the side of the rod is disposed around the rod a spring 23 one end of which is connected with the lateral projection 22 and the other end with the ofiset 20. When the release lever is thrown forward, as in Fig. 2, it strikes projection 22 and moves rod 19 forward swinging the bail 14 outwardly-into the position shown and also throws ed the feed rolls. The bail 14 now forms a convenient guide by which a card may be inserted or dropped into position to be entered between the surface of the platen and the front feed.

When the release lever is thrown back the reaction of spring 23 throws the endwise movable rod 19 rearwardly drawing the supplemental bail 14 down into the position shown in Fig. 1 in which it acts to hold the inserted card or sheet S against the platen above the printing line. When a card or sheet is so inserted, the platen may be turned backward by means of its ordinary knob 24 and the card carried down until the desired portion thereof is brought into the line of print. As the printing proceeds, the card may rise as seen in Fig. 1 between bail 14 and the clamping rolls 11; or may be directed between the platen and the rolls 11. Ordinary card guides may be used, placed on one or both sides of the printing point, but experience has shown that they are not necessary since the bail 14 holds an inserted sheet or card closely against the front face of the platen so that there is no danger of its edge colliding with the ordinary ribbon vi-. 'brator used in visible writing machines.
In Figs. 1 and 2, T indicates a sheet that has been inserted from the rear in the ordinary way as suggested at the beginning of this specification. In the use of the organization herein .described the.cards or sheets S may be inserted from the front as above stated, or they may be. pushed in from the back when the release lever is release or forward position without movement of the platen or disturbance of a sheet T already in the machine, the latter sheet being then held by bail 9, 10, 11 or by such other clamping or feeding devices as may be employed in cotiperation with the platen above the printing line. When the release lever is returned to normal position the sheet T and superposed sheet S will be fed together in the ordinary way, but the superposed sheet may be allowed to pass under supplementary bail 14 and in front of bail 10, 11
being in that way conveniently discharged without the necessity of turning the platen around to such position as would be neces sary if the superposed sheet were passed between the platen and bail 10, 11.
I claim:
1. A visible writing machine, comprising a rotatable platen, paper feed devices below the platen, a paper controlling and feeding device coiiperating with the platen above or beyond the line of print and adapted to press the work paper against the platen, a movable supplementary paper controlling device cooperating with the platen above the printing line and in front of the firstnamed controlling device and having the part next the platen held a slight distance therefrom to provide a clearance between it and the platen to permit of an inserted work sheet passing around the platen between it and the first-named controlling device, and permitting a superposed sheet to pass between the front of said first named paper controlling device and the supplementary one.
2. A visible writing machine comprising a rotatable platen, a bail cooperating therewith abovethe line of print and between which and the platen a paper sheet may pass, a supplementary bail mounted upon the first named bail and coiiperating with the platen in front of the first named bail, combined with means whereby the two bails may be swung rearwardly to and remain in inoperative position combined with paper feed devices, a release therefor and means whereby when the paper feed devices are released, the supplementary bail is moved away from the platen.
3. A visible writing machine comprising a rotatable platen, a paper controlling means cooperating therewith above the line of print, a supplementary paper controlling means cooperating with the platen in front of the first named means and mounted upon the latter there'being paper clearance between said two paper controlling -means and means whereby the first named paper controlling means, and with it, the supplementary paper controlling means may be moved into inoperative position.
4. A visible writing machine comprising a rotatable platen, a bail coiiperating therewith above the line of print and between which and the platen a paper sheet may pass, a supplementary bail mounted upon the first named bail and cotiperating with the platen in front of the first named bail and above the line of print, there being paper clearance between the two bails.
5. A visible writing machine comprising a rotatable'platen, a bail cooperating therewith above the line of print and between which and the platen a paper sheet may pass, a supplementary bail mounted upon the first named bail and cooperating with the platen in front of the first named bail, combined with means whereby the two bails may be swung rearwardly to and remain in inoperative position.
6. A visible writing machine comprising a rotatable platen, a bail cooperating therewith above the line of print and between which and the platen a paper sheet may pass, a supplementary bail mounted upon the first named. bail and cooperating with the platen in front of the first'named bail, combined with paper feed devices, a release therefor and means whereby When the feed devices are moved to release position the supplementary bail is moved away from the surface of the platen.
7. In a visible writing machine, the combination of a pivoted spring-pressed bail comprising side arms, a cross connecting shaft and paper clamping rolls thereon, upwardly extending arms 15 attached to the front ends of said side arms, a guiding and holding bail pivoted in said upright arms and having its lower horizontal member in proximity to the surface of the platen, feed devices, a release lever therefor and means whereby when the release lever is operated the feed devices are moved away from the platen and the downwardly extending bail swung outwardly whereby a sheet may then be inserted and means whereby when the release lever is returned to normal position the bail is returned to normal position.
8. A visible writingv machine, comprising a platen, paper feed devices below the platen, a downwardly extending bail located in front of the platen above the line of print, means on the carriage affording a support for the bail, a feed roll release lever, means operated by the release lever to throw the bail forward and u ward away from the platen when the feed is released to thus form a guide by means of which a sheet or card may be directedinto enga ement with the paper feed devices below t e platen, and means acting to return the bail to normal position when the release lever is returned to normal position and to thus hold the inserted sheet or card against the platen while permitting the free end of the card to project forward over the bail.
9. A visible writing machine, comprising a platen, paper feed devices below the platen, a downwardly extending pivoted bail located above the front portion of the platen and having a horizontal portion in close proximity thereto above the line of print so that it will act to hold closely against the surface of the platen an inserted sheet, means on the carriage affording a pivotal support for said bail, and means for swinging the bail v forward and upwardly away from the platen to provide a guide for the insertion of a sheet and for its direction to the paper feed devices below the platen, and means for returning the bail to normal position to hold an inserted sheet against the surface of the platen.
10. A visible writing machine, comprising a platen, paper feed devices below the platen, a downwardly extending pivoted bail above the front portion of the platen and having a horizontal portion in close proximity thereto above the line of print so that it will act to hold closely against the surface of the platen an inserted sheet, means on the carriage affording a pivotal support for said bail, means for swinging the bail forwardly and upwardly from the platen to provide a guide for directing an inserted sheet into engagement with the feed devices below the platen, means for returning the bail to normal position to hc d an inserted sheet against the surface of the platen, and a spring the reaction of WhiC 11 tends to hold the downwardly extending bail in normal position.
