To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DELIA A. DESMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlestown, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hat boxes, and has for its principal object to provide a hat box which will permit a hat to be removed therefrom without necessitating the removal of the box from the shelf or other support upon which it rests.

Another object of the invention is to pro vide a hat box having a hinged front wall to enable the user to gain access to the interior without removing the box from beneath other articles which may be resting on top.

A. still further object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient box, which would obtain the above named object, and which may be easily and cheaply constructed from card board or other relatively stiff paper or material of a similar character.

lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat box constructed in accordance with this invention showing the same as it would appear with the cover removed and illustrating the box in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank from which the box is constructed. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the top for the box. Fig. 4. is a plan view of the blank from which the top is constructed. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the front corners of the box illustrating the locking means therefor and showing the same in an open position. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5'

showing the device partially closed, and Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view of the corners illustrating the same as it would appear when closed and with the top in place.

Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates the bottom of the box which is formed with the side 2. Formed integral with the bottom 1 at one end is the rear wall 3 and at the opposite end is the front wall 4. The walls 2 are separated from the body by means of the fold lines 5 and the rear wall is separated from the body by the fold line 6. The front wall is also separated by means of the fold line 7, and each of these lines are preferably scored to enable the box to be easily and quickly bent in shape. Formed integral. with the rear wall 3 and side walls 2 are the flaps 8 which are scored diagonally as at 9, and these flaps are arranged to be bent on their fold lines 10 into the form illustrated in Fig. 1. A suitable flap 11 is formed on each of the side walls 2 at the end opposite the flap 8, and this flap 11 is provided with the longitudinal projection 12 which is separated therefrom by means of the fold line 13 which is preferably scored or otherwise indented to enable the same to be easily bent. A similar fold line 14; is provided intermediate the side walls 2 and the flap 11, and this line is arranged to enable the device to be easily folded. A pair of longitudinal flaps 15 are formed at the end of the front wall 1, and these flaps are separated from the flap 11 bymeans of the slit 16, each of the flaps 15 are also separated from the side walls 2 by means of the slit 17 and it will thus be seen that the flap may be bent on the foldline 18 independently of the remaining parts of the device. A longitudinal slot 19 is formed at the outer edge of the front wall 4, and this flap is separated therefrom by means of the fold line 20 upon which it is arranged to be bent.

The top which is best illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 comprises the body 21 which is formed with the lateral walls 22. These lateral walls are separated from the body by means of the fold line 23, and the rear edge of the box is provided with the wall 24: which is separated from the body by means of the fold line 25. Formed at the outer edges of the walls 2-2 and 2a are the fiaps 26 which are arranged to be bent on the fold line 27 formed between the flap and the wall as will be clearly seen upon referring to the drawings. The front edge of the body 21 has formed integral therewith the wall 28 carrying at its free edge the wall 29. A suitable longitudinal extension 30 is formed at each end of the wall 29 and these extensions are separated from the wall 29 by means of the fold line 31. A suitable fold line 32 is formed between the front wall 28 and body 21, and a similar fold line 33 is formed between the wall 28 and the wall 29 Extending longitudinally along the outer edge of the wall 29 is the flap 34 which is separated therefrom by means of the fold line 35. A suitable tongue 56 is formed on each of the extensions 30, and these tongues project in the direction of the flap 34 hereinbefore described.

- In use the side and end walls of the box are bent upwardly on the lines 5 and 6, and in this position it will be apparent that the flap 8 will assume the position shown in the drawings. These flaps are stapled or otherwise secured to the rear wall as illustrated in Fig. 1. The forward flap 11 on the side Wall are then bent into the position illustrated in Fig. 5 and the extension 12 is bent back as shown in Fig. 5 and secured by the clip 37. The flaps 15 on the front wall 4L are then bent upwardly on the line 18 and the forward extension 19 is bent back so that its upper face engages the upper face of the wall 4:. In this position the corner of the box will assume the appearance of Fig. 5 and the same is then ready to be closed, which is done by swinging the end walla upwardly on the line 7 which will cause the flap 15 to pass between the flaps 11 and 12 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 6. Upon further movement of the front wall into its normal position, which is illustrated in Fig. 7, it will be apparent that the flaps 15 will be held firmly in place and thus form a relatively strong corner which interlocks and prevents the side or front walls from bulging or breaking. The top is then assembled by sending the side and end walls 22 and 2: upwardly on the lines 23 and 25 respectively and then sending the flaps 26 downwardly so that they lie against the inner faces of the walls 22 and 24. The walls are held in place by means of the corner portions which are illustrated in Fig. 4 which are riveted or otherwise secured thereto, and the front wall 28 of the top is bent upwardly on the line 32while the flap 29 is bent back on the line 33 so that it engages the inner face of the wall 28. The flap 34 is then bent outwardly on the line 35 and the flaps 28 and 29 are then riveted or otherwise secured to the body 21. In this position it will be ap- 7 parent that the lid is then ready to be placed on the box asclearly shown in Fig. 7. The flaps 30 are then bent on the folder line 31 in such a way that the tongue 36 will project through the slot 38 formed in the front wall of the box and hold the whole together. It

It will thus be seen that a particularly simple and effective hat. box is provided which will enable a person to remove the contents without necessitating the removal,

lVhile in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes in the, combination and arrangement of pats as may fall within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is g l. A hat box including a bottom, side and rear walls rigidly secured to the bottom and connected at their adjacent corners, a front wall hingedly secured to the bottom, flaps formed at the ends of the front wall, extensions formed at the forward ends of the side wall, said extensions being bent back upon the side wall, a bent backportion formed at the terminals of the extensions, said bent back portions being riveted at their upper terminals and forming pockets for the recep- 7 front wall, extensions on the side walls, said extensions being bent back to form pockets for the reception of the flaps on the front wall, a lid, extensions on the side walls of the lid, the front wall of the lid being hinged and tongues formed at the terminals of the extensions on the sidewalls of the lid, said tongues being arranged to engage the front wall of the box and hold the same in its closed position.
