To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES E. CHAD- DOCK, RICHARD G. CHADDOCK, and GUSTAVE A. 'Kt'nz, citizens of the United States, residing at Zanesville,in the county of Muskingumand State of Ohio, haveinvented .certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Gloves, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in reversible gloves.

In the manufacture of reversible gloves, particularly those made of' fabric, it has been customaryto form the opening which receives the thumb member of heart-shape or other such configuration, having sharp corners, and the blank for forming the thumb member was made of such shape as would fit the configurationof the opening.

Ithas been found. that this construction" tends to weaken the fabric, in that the ma terial, which is of course, mesh, tears at the sharp corners, and in time the glove be comes useless. Furthermore, the foregoing construction involveswaste of material.

Our improved glove may .be constructed of canvas, duck, leather or any other substance, according to the uses to whichthe gloves are to be put, and only five distinct parts.

The main body portion 1 of the glove is initially formed as a blank with. a straightv wristband edge 2, substantially straight side edges 3 and afluted upper edge 4. The

blank or body portion 1 is slitted longitushaped fourchettes 9 which taper toward their ends, as shown, the widest portion being at the middle and each fourchette being cut as an integral structure. By the provision of the cigar-shaped fourchettes 9, the side edges of the finger portions 6 are connected together to form. the completed fingers, and the side edges of the finger por- .tion- 7 are correspondingly connected so that the fingers will have a tendency to lie straight out from the palm portion on the glove and fitas easily in one direction or the other, so that the glove maybe used on either hand.-, It is to be particularly noted that the thumb portion 10, which is stitched embodies in all around the thumb opening 8, is also a single piece, of material,'being in blank form provided'in one edge with a V-shaped notch 11 which adapts it to form the thumb'when stitched to the body portion of the glove.

The walls of the V-shape notch gradually curve in an are from a medial line to and intersect the side walls, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The side walls of the thumb piece that stall or portion of the glove WhlCl'l 1s converge, and at the bottom they are curved toward each other to the center of the blank, the curved ortions coming together in alinement with the meeting point of the arch-shaped walls of the V-shaped notch 11.

This construction forms a slight notch at the bottom of the blank. The inner side of the thumb piece, in the completed glove, presents an unbroken or unstitched surface, as shown, as does also the adjoining side of the thumb piece is stitched within the round opening, the pull and the strain when using the glove is spread out and equalized over an increased area which prevents the thumb piece tearing away from the main body portion of theeglove.

Having thus described the invention,what is claimed as new is: I

1. A reversible glove comprising a body portion folded along a medial lineand stitchedat the adjacent edges to produce a palm and a back, the forward edge of the body portion being provided with vertical slits formingthe second, third and little fingers and a solid intermediate portion of twice the width of said fingers and adapted, when the body portion is folded to form the index finger, there being a single thumb receiving opening formed in the body portion .in alinement with the fold of-the index finger and spaced inwardly from the rear edge of said body portion, said thumb receiving opening being substantially circular in shape, and a thumb piece adapted to fit in said circular opening and having converg- A glove constructed in accordance with ing side walls and vertically alined V- shaped notches formed in the center of its upper and lower ends totpermit the thumb to be folded along the longitudinal center thereof to produce mating portions of equal size and shape, the converging walls of the thumb piecebeing connected by a line of stitching arranged on the upper face of the thumb and in alinement with the fold of the index finger.

'2. A reversible glove comprising a body portion folded along a medial line and stitched at the adjacent edges to provide a palm and a back, theforward edges of the palm and back having slits to form fingers,

the body portion having a thumb receiving opening located below "the top of the body portion with its center in alinement with the medial line of fold of the body portion, said thumb receiving opening being substantially circular in shape, and a folded thumb piece fitting in said opening and comprising a body portion having converging side walls and vertically alined V-shaped notches formed in the center of the upper and lower ends thereof, the upper notch being of greater depththan the lower notch and the inclined walls of the notch in the upper end of the thumb piece being gradually curved in an are from the foldv line of said thumb piece to and intersecting the converging side walls thereof, the curved arc shaped walls corresponding to the circular opening in the body portion when the thumb piece is folded, said thumb piece having the curved walls of the notch in the upper end thereof stitched tothe bodyportion around the circular opening and having its converging side walls connected by a line of stitching arranged in alinement with the medial. fold line of the'body portion of the glove.
