SWING'.
Macnee.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 21), 1.5115.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
.i3-iniciara, and a resident of Dothan, in the State of AAlabama, have invented a new and useful improvement in Swings, of which the folio-.vind is a specification. i This invention relates to suspende-d swings of what may be termed the scttee type, and consists iii the improvement hereinafter particularly set forth and ciaimed. Tlie leading object of this invention is to adapt a sightly settee-shaped swing to be readily and quickly converted into a safe cradleor iiifants swing without the aid of detached parts.
vOther objects will be set forth in the general description which follows. i
A sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof.
Figure 1 is a perspective view7 of the improve/d swing; Fig. 2 represents a cross section through one seat etc., corresponding with Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a corresponding section of'v the converted swiiig'ylig. 4- is a fragmentary sectional view@ Fig. is a vie'w of one of the slide pivots detached;
and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional plan projected down from Fig. 3.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in all the figures.
The improved settee-shaped swing is preferably and conveniently constructed with a pair of seats, 1 and 2, and with corresponding individually reversible backs, 1
2'; and is more particularly characterized.
slide, 3, normally inclosed by a convertin the seats, for example the beneath one o v seat marked 2, and adapted to be withdrawn 40 and fastened up as in Fig. 3 so as to close what is herein termed the front of the space above that seat; theback 2 being in position at the oppositeedge of the seat, as shown in Figs. 1-3. The swing is thus readily adapted without detached parts to s ej curely `retain an infant placed between said back-2 and fastened up slide 3 on the seat Q; while an attendant may comfortably occupy the adjoining seat 1; or two persons may occupy the respective seats 1 and 2, facing either in one and the same directionor in opposite directions, the slide 3 being 1nclosed out of the way as in Figs. 1 and 2.
A bottom frame, 4, common to both the seats 1 and 2, supports rigidly a pair of ends 5 and (i and a partition member T; said ends being provided in common with means for attaching thereto ropes.or chains for sus pending the body of the swing. Such means, which maybe of any known or improved kind, are represented by holes,` S, with a hook 8, beneath each hole, iii Fig. 1. Hinge members 9 rigidly attached to the respective backs l and 2 are attached to thc opposing faces of said ends 5 and 6 and partition T by pivots, 10, Figs. 2 and 3, in a customai'y way. The converting slide is supported within the bottom frame l upon a pair of strips 11, Fig. l, adjoining which a pair of guide grooves or ways, 12, Fig. l, are formed in the frame l. These ways are closed by the front sti'ip i of thel frame 4. which is provided. with a slot, 13, through which the slide is .vithdrawable. The stop portions 1 of'said front strip l which close the ways 12 iii front, as aforesaid, are located on thel ends of the slot 13. Fig. shows a section through one of said stop portions y1.
The movements of the slide are controlled by a pair of crank-shaped pivots,
`edges of'tlie slide. and pivotal screw ends 17, Fig. 5, at right angles to said Shanks, which are screwed into thc said lateral edges of the slide. Then the slideis withdrawn as represented by the arrow a in Fig. 2, said heads l5 of the pivots 11 contacting with said stop portions l of said front strip 1' as in Fig. 6, prevent its separation from the body of the swing, while said Shanks 16 permit it to clear the front ofthe frame l, so as to be turned on the pivotal screw ends 17, as represented by the arrow Fig. 2, into the effective position inv which it/is shown by Fig. 3. For fastening the con? verting slide 3 in said effective position, the partition 7 and end G are provided with buckles, 18; and. the slide 3 with matching `straps 19. Other" fastenings may obviously 'claim as-.mj7 invention, and desire tol pat' veach comprising-a stop-forming head .end .110
projecting laterally away from the slide, a shank parallel to the adjoining lateral edge of the slide and a screw end, at right angles to said shank', screwed int-o said lateral edge, and upon which said slide canvbe turned upwardl after it is withdrawn through said slot, and means for vfastening the upturned slide inyits effective position.
Q. The combination, in a settee-shaped swing body, of a bottom frame including a slotted front member and eonstructedwith ways closed in front by said slotted member and a front slot between said ways, a superjacent seat, a back therefor, aconverting slide normally inclosed beneath said seat and withdraw-'able through said front slot; a pair of .crank-shaped pivots for said'slide each comprising a stop-forming 'portion movable within one of said ways, a shank parallel to the adjoining lateral edge of said slide, and a pivot portion at right angles to said shank upon which said slide can be turned upward after it is withdrawn; and
means for fastening the slide in its upturned position; substantially as hereinbefore speci- 3. The combination, in a convertible swing, of a bottom frame comprising a pair of ways and a slotted front piece having stop portions which close said ways in front, a superjacent seat, a converting slide normally inclosed beneath said seat, and a pair of crank-shaped pivots for said slide each comprising a stop forming head lwithin one of said waysadapted to cont-act with the corresponding `stop portion of said front piece, a shank parallel to the adjoining latteral edge of said slide, and a screw end, at right angles to said shank, screwed into said lateral edge, and upon which said slide can be turned upward after it is withdrawn through said slot; substantially as hereinbefore specified.
