Be it known that I, PETER DRoLsHAenN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band Connections, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the provision of a simple, eiiicient and easily applied connecting member for joining together under tension the ends of bands used as ties or hoops about chimneys, water tanks, silos and similar structures.
According to the invention the ends of the band are return bent in spaced parallel relation to the band thus forming two hooked ends opening one away from the other. The connector units hereafter to be described in detail are engaged one with each hook and are then drawn together by bolts so as to securely unite and hold the ends of the band.
In the accompanying drawing and in the description based thereon is set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention. As, however, the invention is capable of embodiment in other and varied constructional forms the drawing and description are to be taken in an illustrative rather than in an unnecessarily limiting sense.
In the drawing-Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of a substantially cylindrical structure such as a chimney; Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the chimney along the medial line of one of the bands; Fig. 3 is a sectional detailshowing on a larger scale the connection between adjacent ends of the band; Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views showing respectively the two end faces of a connecting unit; Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing the end face of the other connecting unit; and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view in perspective of one of the ends of the band.
In the drawings the reference numeral 11 designates generally the cylindrical structure which is to be conined by bands 12, 12. rIhe band may be composed of one piece, or as illustrated in Fig. 2, may comprise a plurality of sections 12a, 12b and 12e. In the former case but one connector would be required and in the latter case as many connectors as there are sections.
Each connector comprises two units 13 and 14 which are alike in every respect save one, which slight difference will be later referred to. With the said exception each of Specication of Letters Patent.

the units comprises a body portion provided with a pocket l5 having side walls 16 and 17, edge walls 18, and 19, and an end wall 20, which latter may be omitted if desired, as shown in the lower half of Fig. 3, and in Fig. 6, wherein the pocket has no end wall. The adjacent ends of the band are outwardly return bent at 21 to provide a hook portion 22 in spaced parallel relation to the band 12 on the outside thereof the said portion 22 being spaced from the band a distance corresponding substantially to the thickness of the band itself, as shown in Fig. 7, and the length of the hook portion 22 corresponds substantially to the depth of the pocket or recess 15 within which it is easily'accommodated, the inner side wall 17 of the connector unit having a thickness corresponding to the thickness of the space separating the portion 22 from the band proper and being cut back at its forward end a distance corresponding to the thickness of the band So as to receive the return bend portion' 21 leaving the forward end of the band flush with the forward end face of the unit as shown in Fig. 3.
Each of the connector units has formed upon its two edges bosses 23, 23, bored longitudinally at 24, 24 to receive draw bolts 25, 25, the connector units 14, as distinguished from the units 13 having their rear faces provided with angular recesses 26, 26,'one to accommodate the angular head 27 of a bolt 25, while the corresponding face of the unit 13 is smooth and serves as a bearing abutment for the nut 28 of said bolt.
The side wall of each unit is cut away on its rear face at 29 to a depth corresponding to the thickness of the band 12 to provide a recess adapted to receive said band so that the rear face of the unit and the rear face of the band will be substantially flush one with the other and both bear against the eX- terior face of the chimney or other structure.
The connector unit 13 having been engaged with a hook 22 in its pocket 15 and the connector unit 14 engaged with the hook 22 on the adjacent end of the band in its pocket 15, and the band being snugly accommodated within the recess 29, the bolts 25 are placed within the bores 24 with their i holding the same. The peculiar construction of the units with their pockets and cutaway Walls provide a connection in which not only is the band eiiciently tightened and held, but the elements are prevented from entering within the units and attacking the same by rust.
I claim:
Vl. A band connector having a recessed inner-face, such recess extending entirely across the Jrace of the connector and permitting the connector to be applied laterally over the band and having a pocket adapted to receive a return bent-end of the band, substantially as described.
2. A band connector having a recessed inner-face, such recess extending entirely across the face of the connector and permitting the connector to be applied laterally over a band, a pocket to receive a return bent-end of the band, and an inner-wall adapted to occupy the space between the band 'and bent-end when the connector is applied to the band, vsubstantially as described.
3. The combination of a band having its ends return bent, a connector therefor comprising a pair of members each having a recessed inner-face, such recess extending entirely across the face of the connector and permitting the member toA be applied later- 'ally over the band and a pocket adapted to receive one of the return bent-ends of the band, and means to draw said members toward one another, substantially as described.

The combination 'of a band having its ends return bent, a connector therefor comprising appair of members each having a recessed inner-face, such recess extending entirely across the face of the connector and permitting the member to be applied laterally over the band, a pocket to receive one of the bent band-ends and an inner-wall adapted to occupy the space between the@ band and bent-end, said Wall being cut away at its forward edge to correspond to the thickness ofthe band, and means to draw said members toward one another, substantially as described.
5. A band connector having a recessed inner-face, such recess extending entirely across the Jface of the connector and permitting the connector to be applied laterally over the band, a pocket adapted to receive a return bent-end of the band, and an innerwall adapted to occupy the space between the band and the bent end, said wall being cut away at its edge to correspond to the thickness of the band, substantially as described.
6. The combination of a band having its ends return-bent in substantially parallel spaced relation, a connector therefor comprising a pair of members each having a recessed inner face, such recess extending entirely across the face of the connector and permitting the member to be applied laterally over the band, a pocket to receive one of the bent band ends, and an inner-wall adapted to occupy the space between the band and bent-end, said wall being cut away at its forward edge to correspond to the thickness of the band, each of said members having apertures at each side of its pocket and its rear face provided with angulairccesses adapted to receive bolt-heads, and draw bolts having angular heads seated in said recesses extending through said apertures and connecting said members together, substantially as described.
