- circulate freely through such portion, whereby the main portions of the hose may be made of the desired texture, strength and the like for wearing qualities, while the open or vented section at the toe part of the stocking or hose does not unduly detract from the (tti normal strength of the latter.
In carrying out my invention ll provide hosiery of any suitable construction with an openwork, porous or vented transverse section at a desired distance back from the toe portion, which open or vented section is suitably knitted with the main portion of the hose, and which section may pass not only across the top of the foot portion over the toes, but may extend down along the sides a suitable distance and down to the sole portion of the hose.
A further preferred embodiment of my in-y vention comprises hosiery having a reinforced sole and toe portion, the openwork or vented section next rearwardly thereof, a further reinforced portionv next rearwardly of said openwork or vented section, the second named reinforced portion being joined to the ordinary wearing portions of the hose, all of such portions being preferably knitted integrally.
Reference isto be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a stocking embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional side view thereof, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail, in plan, of a portion of the said stockin glhe stocking or sock indicated, enerally, at 1, may be knitted or otherwise ormed in any suitable way, such as in tubular manner or full-fashioned manner. At the toe portion at a point over the toes of the wearer is an openwork, porous or vented section or portion 2, which is knitted or otherwise made with a series of spaced openings made relatively large to permit free circulation of Specication of Letters Patent.

air therethrough, said openings being on a scale much more open than the other portions of the hose. The openwork section 2 is shown disposed transversely across vthe topportion of the hose and down along its sides to a point approximating or slightly above the'sole portion, whereby the openings in section 2 permit the free circulation of air downwardly and laterally through the holes. The ventilated or porous section 2 may be made integral with the remainder single piece.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawings the hose is shown provided with the reinforced toe portion 3, rearwardly of which is the ventilated or porous section 2, secured at its forward edge tothe rear edge of portion 3, and rearwardly of the section 2 is a reinforced portion 4, secured at its forward edge to the rearward edge of section 2, and having'its rear edge secured to the ordinary rnitting 5 over the instep portion. rlhe sole portion 6 is shown reinforced and united integrally with the reinforced portions 3, 4, the vented or porous section 2 at its ends, and the ordinary knitted portion 5.
By means of my improvements a stocking or sock having the ordinary requirements for strength, etc., is provided with the advantage of the o en or porous section 2 located as describe over the toes of the wearer, whereby the strength of the sockor stocking for use is maintained, and by means of the reinforced section 4 interposed between the openwork section 2 and the main portion 5, the desired strength between the latter section and the toe is provided, notwithstanding the very open or porous like section 2 interposed at the top of the forward portion of the stocking or sock.
Having now described my invention what l claim is 1. A stocking or hose having a reinforced upper front toe portion, a porous or open section extending transversely along the top and united at its forward edge to said reinforced upper front portion and at its ends to the sole portion, and having a reinforced portion behind said section that is united at its forward edge to the rea'r edge of said section and united at its rear edge to the forward edge of lthe foot portion.
2. A stocking or hose knitted integrally and having a reinforced sole and upper front .of the hose by suitably knittingthe hose in a lll@ toe portion, a porous or open section extend- Signed at New York'city, in the county of ing transversely along the top behind said New York and State of New York, this 23rd reinforced toe portion and united thereto day of June, A. D. 19M. and to the reinforced sole portion, and a re- EDG-AR B. CAHN.
