AUTHA C. BENSON, OF ROSENBURG, TEXAS.
FENCE-STAY.
Application filed May 25, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUTHA C. BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rosenburg, in the county of Fort Bend and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Stays, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fence stays; and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means for effectively bracing and spacing the wires of a fence.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the above character which will possess advantages in points of eficiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the application of my improved fence stay. Fig. 2 is a detail side elevation of the upper end of the stay.
As herein embodied, my improved fence stay comprises a longitudinal body member 7 formed of a suitable length of heavy wire, the upper end of which is bent to form a hook 8 adapted to engage over the upper wire 4 when applying the same to a fence or the like. Arranged around the body 7 is a coil 9 which is adapted to be engaged with the fence Wires in order to hold them in position with respect to the stay.
It will be noted that in placing my improved stay in position, the coil 9 is first arranged along side the fence wires and engaged with the same. The body portion 7 is then inserted in the coil, engaging between the fence wires and the convolutions of the coil in order to hold the same in position.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2U, 1915.
Serial No. 840,825.
The hook 8 after being engaged over the upper wire is closed upon the body and the upper end of the coil fastened within the loop formed thereby, as shown at 10. From the above it will be readily apparent that I have provided a simple and durable device which can be quickly and readily placed in position and the fence wires secured thereto. The device, as herein shown and described is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost.
WVhile I have shown ahd described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the principles of the invention, or departing from the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim is The combination with a plurality of fence wires arranged in spaced relation, of a coil having its convolutions arranged in alinement and adapted to be engaged with the wires of the fence, a stay member adapted to be inserted down through the coil between certain of the convolutions thereof and the fence wires to engage the fence wires with the convolutions and retain said wires against lateral movement, the upper eX- tremity of the stay being reversely directed to a hook portion, the upper end of said coil being extended over the hook portion and thence downwardly through the hook portion and through one of the convolutions whereby to entirely encircle the hook portion at the upper end of the stay and retain the same against any longitudinal movement with respect to the coils.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
