MATTRESS SPRING. No. 245,971. Patented Aug. 23,1881.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELS NELSON AND JAMES NELSON, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
MATTRESS-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,971, dated August 23, 1881.
Application filed February 16, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, NELs NELSON and J AMES NELSON, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress-Springs; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will 1o enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in spiral-wire mattress-springs 5 and it consists in the peculiar manner of connecting the end or ends of the wire of `which the springs are formed to the bodyot' rthe spring at or near zo the terminus of the first coil.
Heretofore the end of the wire forming the spring has been attached to the body of the coil by being simply wound around the wire, forming the coil at or near the point of the completion of therst circle, or, in other words,
a loop was formed upon the end of the wire in which the body of the coil is secured. Itis obvious that when thus formed the coil is liable to slip through the loop and the diameter of the coil increased and the spring deranged.
By our improvement the loop is formed in the body of the spring at a point near the terminus of the first coil, through which the end of the wire upon which a hook has been formed is inserted.
Our invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawing, which represents a perspective view thereof.
A represents a spiral-wire mattress-spring.
B is the base or first coil. C is a loop formed 4o at a point near the terminus of the iirst coil.
D is a hook formed upon the end of the wire.
It is represented as secured in the loop O.
It is obvious that by this form of construction the end of the base-coil will be securely retained at a fixed point in the loop, and the liability of the base-coil to expand, as heretofore, by the sliding of the loop is obviated. If desired, the opposite end of the spring may also be enlarged and theend ot' the upper coil se- 5o cured in the same manner.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improvements in spiral-wire mattress springs herein described, consisting in the loop O, formed inthe body of the coil, and hook D, formed at the end of the coil, said hook being adapted to engage in the loop C and retain the end of the Wire or coil, substantially 6o as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereofl we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
NELS NELSON. JAMES NELSON'.
