Description
TL COLES.
Carriage-Step.
Patented July, 25, 1854.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS COLES. OF NElV YORK. N. Y.
OMNIBUS-STEP PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,360, dated July 25, 1854.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS Cows, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful machine for the protection of omnibus steps and springs against the intrusion of children and others riding thereon and also preserving the steps clean and dry, which I call the omnibus-steps protector; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, refer: ence being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the back or end elevation; Fig. 2, a side view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stage, the steps and machine.
Letters (4 a, the return of the sides of the machine; letters 0, 0, c, c, the panel covering from top to bottom of the machine; letters (Z, (Z, triangular plates before the exposed ends of the spring preventing a step upon the same; letters 6, e, an upright filling in between the steps, making with the covering apron or machine a complete inclosure proof against wet or dirt; letters f, f, projection of the machine.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction of wood .(although copper or sheet iron may be used, with which first trials were made) and operation.
I prepare two side bars, deeper than thick, see letters A, A, of strong wood the full. length of the machine, beveled and curved from upper ends, to give them equal projection with the ordinary steps, from the upright stiles of the door from the bottom reduced at the upper ends, forming a gentle curve (see letter B) from under the bead usually in a transverse curve, across the back of the stage. These braces are grooved on the upper inside to receive the ends of the panel of strong thin wood, being well secured makes the principal machine to be secured to and moving with the door by screw bolts or otherwise. To carry out-and complete the arrangement according to first design, in reference to steps now and long in use, it is necessary to line or back up the braces between the steps, which may be done with iron, wood or the most suitable material.
The triangle shield to the ends of the back spring may be made of sheet iron, copper, &c., of different thicknesses and secured to the spring beam or otherwise.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Constructing an appliance or covering for the steps of the omnibus in form and manner described in the specification (made of wood, sheet iron, copper or other material) corresponding in width with the door and the sides falling over the ends of the steps, secured to and moving with the door.
2. To complete and carry out the design of the invention forming metallic triangular plates, to be well secured to spring bar or otherwise, shielding the ends of the hind spring, according to specification and drawings, the whole combined, affording the desired relief to stage men.
THOMAS GOLES.
