Be it known that l, JAMES McDnsMo'r'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident 'of the city of New York, Long island City, borough of Queens, in the county oit Queens and State of New York, having invented a neu7 and Improved lWagonBody, -oftvhich `the following is a full, clear, and exact defurnish the tradevvith parts oi a Wagonbody which can be assembled or built up Withoutthe help of a blacksmith, and, furthermore, to provide a Wagon-body any Worn-out part of Which can be easily andquicl-ly replaced Without the aid of a blacksmith.,

The upper portion of said side 12 is provided with members 31 each forming an eyelet through -which a bolt 32 is made to pass, which bolt also passes through the sides 11 and the clamps 13, so that said bolt forces the sides 11 against the front 12 and pins lthe same therebetween, thus preventing the movement of the upper portion v of said front between the sides.
It will be noted that any stress applied to Y the sides 11 of the wagon-body will tend to 'force the same apart, and, therefore, the maximum reactionA will take place at the portionofthe transverse bars 14 projecting out of said sides; and by inserting the metallic strips 22 therebetween the tendency to break at this point is entirely eliminated.
In Figs. 7 and 8 a modified structure of the retaining clamp is shown whereby said sides 11 carried by said retaining clamp can be inclined with ,reference to the bottom within predetermined limits, whereby, also, the said side 11 caribe varied in height.

The clamp 33, in this case, has its head 34 pivotally connected to the main body of the clamp, which main body 35 is similar in cross section to the portion 26 of the clamp 13 previously described. The pivotal connection obtained by means of a pin or bolt 3G permits the movement of the body in the longitudinal plane of the clamp. The lateral displacement of the head is prevented by extensions 37 formed by the head and engaging the sides of the main body portion of the clamp, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. Projecting out of the upper end of the major portion 35 of the retaining clamp is a member 38 toi-ming an extension of the The upper end of said member 38 is adapted to grip the upper edge ,of the side 11. Said member 38 is provided with a longitudinal slot 39 which is engaged by the bolt 23 securing the side 11 to the retaining clamp. Said member, at its lower end, is also provided with a lateral eXtension 40 through which passes an adjusting screw 41, which also engages a projection 42 formed on the main body 35 of the re- L taining clamp By means of such adjusting screws 41, the member 38 can be extended within a predetermined limit, and, thus the height of the side 11 can be varied by adding one or more of the boards 17. It is understood that in such cases the length of the bolts 20 binding said. boards must be altered.
To give a proper inclination to the side 11', a, proper size wedge 43 is fitted between the main body of the clamp 33 and the head 34 of the same, said wedge being retained in place by a recess 44 provided in the head. It is self-evident that the inclination may be increased or decreased by varying the size of the wedge 43. Thus, by'means of this clamp 33, not only the inclination of the sides can be varied, but the length of the same can be increased very readily and without in any way reducing the strength of the entire wagon-body.
It will be seen that by providing a wagonbody as described, l can supply the trade with any part or all the parts of a wagonbody, and they can easily assemble the same. As, for example, I supply the sides and bottom all assembled and the only thing lett for them to do is to put the retaining clamps 13 on to the projecting ends of the transverse bars 14 after the sides 11 have been placed. Orif desired, the clamps can be secured to the sides 11 previous to their being mounted on the bottom by sliding the same into position with lthe heads of the clamps sliding on to the projecting ends, and then securing the clamps in proper position by tightening said screws 25. Thus, it will be seen that the wagon-body is formed by; simply tightening the screws 25, then placing the front 12 into position and plac- Lisanne ing the bolt 32 to secure the front and 'the sides together. it will be seen that the assembling of the parts furnished will not require theservices of a blacksmith, and that if any additional bolts are to be placed to connect the sides 11 to the clamps 13, the
l holes can be drilled through the sides by anyone with a suitable tool.
It will be also noted that the capacity of the wagon-body can be varied by means of inserting some of the boards 17 in the sides l1 of the wagon or b y inclination of the sides by means of the modified structurel of the retaining clamps. f
It is evident that various changes might b'e made and modiications resorted to in the construction and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the spirit and scope ofmy invention; hence, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction shown.
Having thus described my invention,
claim, as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
.1. In a wagon-body, a bottom comprising a plurality of longitudinal boards, spaced bars disposed transversely of said longitudinal boards, a metallic strip associated with each of said bars and positioned between said bars and boards, said bars projecting from the sides of the bottom ;l sides adapted to rest on the projecting ends of' said bars;
and retaining clamps for securing said sides to the bottom, each of said retaining clamps comprising an apertured head adapted to receive a projecting end of the bar and an extension adapted to engage the-side, each of said clamps having means whereby the same can be rigidly secured tothe bar and side, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a wagon-body, a bottom and sides forming independent units, said bottom having transverse bars projecting from the sides thereof and forming a support for said sides; retaining clamps removably associated with the bottom and sides whereby said sides are maintained in proper position onthe bars, each of said clamps comprising an apertured head portion adapted to receive a projecting end of they bar and an extension U-shaped in cross section adapted to engage the side, said head portion hav-v ing means whereby said clamp can be rigidly secured to said bars, and said extension having means. in the bottom of the U portion whereby the same can be rigidly secured to the side, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. .y
3. ln a wagon-body, a bottom and sides forming independent units, said bottom having transverse bars projecting from the sides thereof and forming a support for said sides; 'retaining clamps removably associated with the bottom and sides whereby said sides are maintained in proper position on the bottom, each of said retaining clamps comprising a main body and an apertured head pivotallyj connected, said apertured head being adapted to engage a projecting end of 'the bar and having means 'for securing said head rigidly to the bar, said main body having means whereby the same can be secured to the sides; and wedges of different sizes adapted to be fitted between the main body and the head of the clani'p, whereby the inclination of the sides with reference to the body can be varied substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. in a wagon-body, a bottom and sides forming independent units, said bottom having transverse bars projecting `from the sides thereof and forming a support for said sides, and retaining clamps removably associated with the bottom and sides whereby said sides are maintained in proper position on the bottom, each ot said retaining clamps comprising a main body and an apertured head pivotally connected thereto, said head being adapted to engage a projecting end of the bar; means whereby said he`ad can be rigidly secured to the bar, said main body having means whereby the same can be secured rigidly to the sides, said head having a recessed portion; and wedges adapted to be fitted into said recessed portion of the head and to engage said main body, whereby the inclination of the sides with reference to the bottom of the wagon can be varied.
5. In a wagon-body, a bottom and sides forming independent units retaining clamps sides whereby said sides are maintained in nproper position on the bottom, each of said .clamps comprising an extension at the upper end thereof, said extension having a U- shaped portion atone end adapted to engage the upper edge of the sides, and a lateral eX- tension at the lower end, said clamp having a projection.; and, a screw engaging the lat eral projetion of the extension and the projection ot the clamppvhereby the length of the clamp by means ot' said extension can be varied, said extensin having a longitudinal slot :whereby the same can be adjusted and rigidly secured. to the clamp.
