HINGE BRACKET.

This invention relates to hinge-brackets for vehicle bodies and particularly to hingebrackets for dumping vehicle bodies, and the main object of the invention is to provide a hinge-bracket of novel construction for dumping truck bodies and other similar swingingelements whereby the dumping or swinging body or element may be mounted for free swinging movements on a chassis frame or other support'while at the same time maintained rigidly against lateral or sidewise movements when in normal or letdown position.
A further object of the invention is to provide hinge-brackets each consisting of two members hingedly connected at one end, one member having a guiding and retaining rib and the other member having a recess to receive said rib, the rib and recess being of such form as to normally lock the members, when closed together, against lateral movements and strain on the connecting hinge, and also to guide the members together in a closing action so as to make a dumping-body equipped therewith self-centering when let-down on its frame after a dumping operation.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal section through one side of a baseframe and a dumping body shown as united at such side by one of my improved hingebrackets.

In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a hinge-bracket comprising a pair of bracket members 1 and 2, the bracket member 1 having atone end an eye 3 adapted to fit between depending eyes 4 on the bracket member 2,. through which eyes 3 and 4. a bolt' 5 jasses, thereby hinging said bracket members together at one end thereof.
Two or more brackets, comprising the bracket members 1 and 2, may be employed for hingedly mounting a swinging or tilting body upon a support. This body may be the dumping body of an automobile truck or similar vehicle," which dumping body is mounted upon a base frame, such as the chassis-frame of a truck. In the use of the brackets upon a dumping automobile truck body, a pair of brackets may be used for connecting the dumping body at each side to the underlying side bars or transverse rear bar of the chassis truck frame. As
shown in the present instance, disclosing the application at oneside of the vehicle, the bottom bracket member 1 is arranged to rest upon the top surface-of the rear end of the side bar or rear cross bar of a chassis frame 5"-, said member 1 having bolt holes 6 for passage of bolts 7 securing it to said frame member 5, while the bracket member 2 is suitably secured to the adjacent sill 6 on the underside of the tiltable body, the bottom 7 of which body is shown. At its forward end the bracketmember 2 is provided with an opening 8 for the passage of a bolt 9 securing it to the sill 6 and body bottom 7, and'at its rear end the bracket member 2 is provided with a plurality of openings 10 for the passage of separate bolts or for the passage of a'U-bolt 11 extending through two of the openings 10 and across the base of said bracket member with its limbs er:- tending on opposite sides of the sill 6 and through the bottom 7 and a suitable washer plate 12 and equipped with securing nuts. Theuse of three openings'lO, two of which are arranged adjacent to each side of the bracket member 2,-permits of the use of either of two sizes of U-bolts for application to structures using sills of different thicknesses.
The bracket members are provided upon their opposed faces with internesting and engaging means for guiding them into engagement with each other on their closing movement and interlocking them together when closed, so that the closed brackets carrying the tiltable body resting in normal position on the supporting frame will hold said body from lateral movements. To this end, the bracket member 1 is provided with a convex upper face and the bracket member 2 with a concave lower face. The convex upper face of bracket member 1 consists of a longitudinally extending rib 13, running the full length of the body portion and eye 8 of said bracket member, said rib be ing highest at the center and thence sloping toward the sides of the bracket member, into the side edges of which the sloping faces of the rib merge. At points in alinement with the bolt openings 6 this rib is provided with sockets 1A to receive and enclose the heads of the bolts 7, allowing the bracket member 2 to close fullydown on the upper face of bracket member 1 without interference from said bolts. The concave face of the bracket member 2 consists of a longi tudinally extending recess 15 whose side walls slope at an angle conforming substantially to the slope of the faces of the rib 13, said sloping faces of the recess communi eating at the center with a longitudinally extending slot 16. This slot is designed to receive the apex of the rib 13, allowing the rib to be accommodated without carrying the sloping surfaces of the recess to an objectionably high point at which the middle of the top of the bracket 2 must be made comparatively thin, with liability of breakage, or the center of the top of said bracket made objectionably deep, the use of the slot avoiding these objections. The member 2 is of greater length than the member 1 and has a front portion 17 through which the bolt hole 8 extends, which front portion forms an abutment for the head of the bolt 9 which is thus arranged to lie in a clear space in front of the bracket 1. If desired, the bracket 2 may be provided with recesses 18 to receive any portions of the heads of the bolts 5 which may project beyond the recesses 1 1, where said recesses 14 are made of comparatively shallow depth.
Itwill be understood from the foregoing that by means of the bracket members of the construction described the vehicle body is mounted to tilt or swing upon the support or base frame 5 between a normal carrying position, in which it rests on said base frame as shown in Figure 1, and a dumping position in which it is tilted rearwardly to a desired degree, as shown in Figure 2. When the body is swung back from dumping to carrying position, it will be evident that the bracket members 2 in moving downward on the bracket members 1 will engage the ribs 13, which will enter the recesses 15, thus centering and guiding the brackets 2 and the vehicle body so that they will be brought to an exact degree back into normal position, and preventing any transverse strains at the seating moment upon the pivot bolts 5 Also when the body is fully seated on its supporting frame the recessed brackets 2 will embrace thebrackets 1, whereby the bracket members will be interlocked and the clumping body will be held from lateral or sidewise movements on the hinges 5 in the running of the vehicle, and said hinged bolts relieved from the twisting strains. The inclined surfaces of the ribs 13 obviously are adapted to act as guides, in the event that, from the looseness of any parts, the bracket members 2 move back out of accurate alinement, said inclined surfaces of the ribs acting as sloping surfaces to bring the brackets 2 into accurate register and seating position.
It will be further seen that my invention provides a simple, reliable and efficient type of bracket structure, which may be readily and conveniently manufactured and sold at a low cost and readily and conveniently applied for use, with the expenditure of but a comparatively small amount of time and labor.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim 1. A hinge-bracket comprising a pair of hingedly connected bracket members, one of said bracket members being adapted to be received in part by the other bracket member when said bracket members are brought together, the first-named bracket member being provided with a longitudinally extending V-shaped rib, and the other bracket member being provided with a V-shaped recess to receive said rib.
2. A hinge-bracket comprising a pair of hingedly connected bracket members, one of said bracket members having a V-shaped rib of a width at any point conforming to the width of the bracket member and extending the full length of said bracket member, and the other bracket member having a longitudinally extending recess adapted to receive said rib and having sloping surfaces conforming thereto, said recess being of less length than said second-named bracket member but of a length to receive said rib.
3. A hinge-bracket comprising a bracket member including a body having bolt openings at opposite sides of its center, a hinge knuckle at one of its ends, and a V-shaped central rib extending lengthwise of its body and knuckle, and a second member comprising a body having a bolt opening at one end and a pair of hinge knuckles and a sebeing provided with a V-shaped recess to ries of three openings at its opposite end, receive the V-shaped rib of the first-named one of said series of openings belng located member and having its knuckles hinged to 10 at one side of the longitudinal center of said the knuckle of the latter.
