T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that l, MORRIS S. ELKEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inEnvelops; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to iniprovements in envelops, and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel form of envelop or covering for inclosing letters or papers, with a view of providing a novel sealing means for the closing flap of the envelop, which sealing means can be readily severed by the receiver, and when severed serves as an extractor for expeditiously removing the contents of the envelop without in the least having torn any part of the envelop and without destroying the main structure of the envelop for future use.
In connection with an envelop of the general character above stated and h erein after more particularly specified, the invention has reference, also, to the provision of means which servesvas a safe-guard and a detector against tampering with the sealed envelop.
The principal object of the present 1nvention, with the above in view, is to provide a simple structure which can be readily manufactured at Vsmall cost, and which is of economic construction in that the blank from which the envelop is made takes less paper than the envelop of the usual construction.
rlhe invention has for its further object to provide an envelop of the character stated which may be readily sealed by means of a sealing strip, said strip being easily severed to get at the contents of the envelop, and the said strip serving at the same time as an extractor for the expeditious removal of the said contents.
@ther objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be vices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more particularly described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which is appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a rear face view of a sealed envelop, showing one embodiment of the principles of the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the envelop before sealing. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the envelop, said section being taken on line 3-3 in said Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a similar section of the same, said section being taken on line 4 4; in said Fig. 2, the thicknesses of the material of the various parts of the envelop, for the sake of clearness, being somewhat exaggerated. Fig. 5 is a face view of a blank from which the envelop is manufactured; and Fig. 6 is a face view of the respective end-portions of the sealing and extraction-strip employed with the envelop. Fig. 7 is a rear face view of a slightly modified construction of envelop embodying the principles of the present invention; and Fig. 8 is a transverse vertical section of the same, said section being taken on line 8-8 in said Fig. 7 the thicknesses of the-material of the parts of the envelop in this case also being shown exaggerated.
Similar characters of reference are einployed in the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the iigures of the drawings, the referencecharacter l indicates one form'of blank from which the envelop is made, the said blank being divided upon the median line indicated in dotted outline, at 2 in Fig. 5 of the drawings, so as to provide a front face portion 3 and a rear face portion 4, when the blank is folded upon said dotted line 2. Along its vertical marginal edge-portion, indicated by the dotted line 5, the member 3 has a sealing flap, as 6, and along its lower marginal edge-portion, indicated by the dotted line 7, the said member 3 has another sealing fiap, as 8. Along its upper marginal edge-portion, indicated by the dotted line 9, the said member 3 is provided with a closing iiap, as 10, of any suitable marginal configuration, the said member 3 being also formed at a suitable point along the dotted line 9 with a laterally extending slit 11.
The member 4 of the blank 1 is formed with the lower straight marginal edge-portion 12 and the vertical straight marginal edge-portion 13, the upper marginal edgeportion of said member 4 being preferably cut away, as at 14, the purpose of which is self-evident to those familiar with the art pertaining to the manufacture of envelops. At a suitable point, near the said marginal edge-portion 14 of the member 4, the latter is also formed with a lateral extending slit, as 15.
The herein-above mentioned sealing and extractor element or member is made in the form of a strip 16, having an enlarged endportion, as 17, which'is provided with a laterally extending slit 18. The upper endpoition of the said strip is preferably provided with a line of perforations 19, or the like, upon which the strip is adapted to be severed, as will presently appear, and to provide an end sealing member 20. The said end-portion 17 is gummed, as at 21, and the said sealing member 20 is also gummed, as at 22.
1n the manufacture of the envelop, the parts of forming the blank 1 are suitably `folded and gummed so as to provide an envelop of the general configuration shown in the several figures of the drawings, the gummed surface 21 of the end-portion `17 of the strip 16 being secured upon the inner faceof the member 4, directly over the slit 15, and in such a manner that the slit 18 in the portion 17 will be brought into perfect registration with the slit 15. The main-body portion of the strip 16 is made to extend downwardly upon the face of the member 4, the strip being double upon itself, at 23, and the remaining bodyportion of the strip extending in an upward direction and lying against the inner face of the member 3, substantially as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 8 of the drawings. The upper endportion of the said strip 16 is thereupon passed into and'tlirough the slit 11 in the member 3, so that the said end-portion of the strip will lie upon the front of the closing flap 10, with the perforated end-sealing member 2O extending beyond the marginal edge of the closing fiap 10, substantially as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings.
When thus arranged, the contents can be readily placed within the envelop, so as to be placed between the doubled-over portions of the strip 16, said contents being indicated by the reference-character 25.
To seal the envelop, the closing Aflap 1() is closed over the opening in the end of the envelop, the gummed portion 22 of the seal.- ing member 20 is moistened, and then inserted from the back of the envelop through the registering slits 15 and 18, until said gummed portion rests against the strip 16, immediately beneath the slit 18, to which it is attached by the application of pressure, in any suitable manner.
1n order to get at the contents of the euvelop, all that is necessary is to take hold of the folded-over portion 24 of the strip .16, located upon the outer face of the closing flap 10, and tearing the strip along the line of perforations 19. 1n this manner the said severed end-portion of the strip 16 will provide a suitable pull or finger-piece for pulling the extractor-strip in an outward dii'ection fi'oin the envelop, thereby forcing the contents of the envelop from the non-sealed end-portion of the envelop, as will be clearly evident.
From the foregoing it will be seen, th at no parts of the body and closing iap of the envelop are destroyed, and the future usefulness of the envelop for replacing the contents therein will not be impaired. The tearing oi severing of the sealed end-portion of the strip 16 will also readily indicate to the receiver of the envelop that the latter has been tampered with; and, furthermore, owing to the manner of the sealed gummed surface-portions within the body of the envelop, it will be more diiiicult to separate the fastened portions by steaming, or otherwise.
In the construction represented in Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings, the general arrangements and constructions of the parts are the same as those described herein-above, but that the slits 15 and 18 are dispensed with, and that the sealing end-portion of the extractor-strip has no line of tearing perforation, the said end-portion having a gummed surface 25, by means of which it is fastened directly upon the outer face of the member 4, after the closing iap has been folded down, as will be clearly seen froln an inspection of said Fig. 8 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description of the present invention, it will be seen that a simply constructed envelop and a simple and efficient means are provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but, it will be understood, that while the elements herein described and shown in the accompanying drawings, are adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it will be evident that they show merely one embodiment all() of the principles of the invention. I-Ience, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements of the parts as described in the foregoing specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim l. An envelop having an open portion and a closing flap adapted to be folded over said open portion, said envelop being also provided With a slit in its folded-over portion, and an extractor consisting of a doubledover strip secured at one end-portion Within said envelop and at a point at the upper edge of the inner surface of the rear face-portion of the envelop, said strip having its other portion extending along the inner surface of the front face-portion of the envelop and having its end-portion extending through said slit to the outside of the envelop, said end-portion serving as a pull-piece for the Withdrawal of the contents from vvithin the envelop.
2. An envelop having an open portion and a closing flap adapted to be folded over said open portion, said envelop being also provided with a slit in its folded-over portion, and an extractor consisting of a doubledover strip secured at one end-portion Within said envelop and at a point at the upper edge of the inner surface of the rear face-portion of the envelop, said strip having its other portion extendingalong the inner surface of the front face-portion of the envelop and having its end-portion extending through said slit to the outside of the envelop and folded so as to extend over the outer surface of the said closing flap, and means connected with the said end-portion of the strip for sealing said end-portion With relation to the envelop.
3. An envelop having an open portion and a closing flap adapted to be folded over said open portion, said envelop being also provided With a slit in its folded-over portion, and an extractor consisting of a doubledover strip secured at one end-portion Within said envelop and at a point at the upper edge of the inner surface of the rear face-portion of the envelop, said strip having its other portion extending along the inner surface of the front face-portion of the envelop and having` its end-portion extending through said slit to the outside of the envelop and folded so as to extend over the outer surface of the said closing flap, and means connected with the said end-portion of the strip for sealing said end-portion with relation to the envelop, the said end-portion of the strip being provided also vvith a series of perforations for severing said sealed end-portion to provide a pull-piece for the Withdrawal of the contents from Within the envelop.
4. An envelop comprising a blank folded so as to form a front faceemember and a rear-member, sealing flaps connected With said face-member and sealed upon said rearmember to provide an envelop-body having an open portion, and a closing Hap connected With said front face-member adapted to be folded over said open portion, said front face-member having a receiving slit, and the said rear-member also having a receiving slit, and an extractor consisting of a doubled-over strip secured at one end-portion upon the inner face of said rear-member, said end-portion of the strip having a slit in registration with the slit in said rear-memher, said strip having its other end-portion extending through the slit in the front facemember and folded so as to extend over the outer surface of the said closing flap, said end-portion of the strip being adapted to be inserted through the said registering slits, and means connected With said end-portion of the strip for sealing said endportion Within the envelop.
5. An envelop comprising a blank folded so as to form a front face-member and a rear-member, sealing flaps connected vvith said face-member and sealed upon said rearn member to provide an envelop-body having an open portion, and a closing fiap connected With said front face-member adapted to be folded over said open portion, said front face-member having a receiving slit, and the said rear-member also having a receiving slit, and an extractor consisting of a doubled-over strip secured at one end-portion upon the inner face of said rear-member, said end-portion of the strip having a slit in registration With the slit in said rear-member, said strip having its other end-portion extending through the slit in the front facemember and folded so as to extend over the outer surface of the said closing flap, said end-portion of the strip being adapted to be inserted through the said registering slits, and means connected With said end-portions of the strip for sealing said end-portion Within the envelop, the said end-portion of the strip being provided also With a series of perforations for severing said sealed endportion to provide a pull-piece for the Withdravval of the contents from Within the envelop.
