HENRY I. DAVIS, OF ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN.
MOP-HEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1915.
Application filed February 12, 1914. Serial No. 818,291. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY I. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ann Arbor, in the county of l/Vashtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop- Heads; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in mop heads of that class which consist of a clamp or wire fixed to a suitable holder or handle.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efiicient device of this character especially designed for use in connnection with what are known as dustless mops.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 represents a perspective view of this improved mop head with the jaws in open position ready to receive a mop; Fig. 2 represents a front elevation with the jaws in closed position; and Fig. 3 represents an edge or side elevation thereof.
This improved mop head is composed of four parts, a fixed jaw or frame 1 of malleable iron or iron wire having a shank 2 for attachment to a handle H; a movable clamping jaw 3 for cooperation with said fixed jaw and which is hinged to said jaw 1 and spring wire catches 4 and 4 for holding said movable jaw yieldably but firmly in engagement with the jaw 1.
The heavy wire forming the fixed jaw 1 is bent with its ends extended in parallel lines to a certain point to form the shank 2 of the jaw 1 from which they diverge from each other in opposite directions and in alinement to form an inner cross bar 5. From the ends of this cross bar 5, the wire is extended forwardly to provide side members 6 and 7 for the jaw 1 and these side members have offset loops 8 and 9 arranged near their inner ends and disposed oppositely to each other to form bearings for the clamping jaw as will be hereinafter described. The forward ends of the side members 6 and 7 are extended laterally outward in opposite directions to form short cross bars 10 and 11 from the outer ends of which extend parallel arms 12 and 13 arranged in planes at right angles to the bars 10 and 11 and which are connected at their outer ends by a cross bar 14.
From the above description, it will be seen that this jawl is formed from a single piece of wire bent in the manner described with its terminals arranged in close prox imity in parallel relation to form the shank 2 which is adapted to be driven into one end of the handle H and secured therein in any suitable mannerr The movable clamping jaw is here shown substantially rectangular in form comprising side members 15 and 16 and outer and inner cross bars 17 and 18 respectively. This jaw 3 is also preferably constructed ,of heavy iron wire one end of which is bent to form an eye 19 arranged at the inner end of the side member 15 through which the other end of the wire which forms the end of the rear or inner cross bar extends and is bent laterally to form a hook 20 for holding said ends firmly in engagement to prevent their accidental separation.
The inner or rear cross bar 18 of this rectangular clamping jaw 3 is pivotally mounted in the bearings formed by the offset loops 8 and 9 in the side members 6 and 7 of the jaw l, the inner or rear cross bar 18 of the jaw 3 being slightly longer than the space between the side members 6 and 7 of the jaw 1 whereby the side members 15 and 16 of the jaw 3 are positioned outside the side members 6 and 7 of the jaw 1 and are adapted to overlap the short cross bars 10 and 11 of the jaw 1 and the cross bar 14 thereof, the outer or front cross bar 17 of the jaw 3 preferably extending beyond the cross bar 14 of the jaw 1 to afford means for opening the jaws when desired, the gripping action of the jaws taking place between the front cross bar 14 of the jaw 1 and the side members 15 and 16 of the jaw 3 near their outer ends and between which a dust cloth or mop is adapted to be inserted and firmly held.
The spring wire catches 4 and 4 for bolding the movable jaw yieldably in engagement with the fixed jaw 1 are here shown in the form of coiled springs 21 and 22 mounted on the inner or rear cross bar 17 of the jaw 3 and each having arms 23 and 24 ex tending rearwardly and forwardly respectively. The rear arms 23 of the coiled springs 21 and 22 have hooks 25 on their terminals which are engaged with the rear crossbar 5 of the jaw 1 on the opposite sides of the handle H. a j
The forwardly extending arms 24 of said springs flare outwardly or diverge and are provided at their terminals withhooksjflfi which engage the side members15 and 16 "of the 3 near their outer endsthereby forcing said side members laterally into engagement with the jaw 1, the coil springs 21 and 22 exerting their tension for holding the jaw 3 in engagement with the jaw 1. c As shown the arms 24 of the spring catches 4: and 4c" extend obliquely across the side members 15 and 16 of the jaw 3 and the hooks or fingers 26' on the terminals thereof bear against the outer faces of said side members. By this arrangement of the spring catches 1 and 4c the rectangular clamping 8 firmly "engages the cross bar 1 1 of the jawl to 'securely hold' a'dust cloth or mop between said elements and when it is-desired to remove the mop, all that is necessaryisto grasp the front cross bar'17 of the jaw 3 which extends beyond 'the cross bar 14' and force'said jaw 3 laterally outward against the tension of-the spring catches 21 and 22. When this cross bar is released, these 'spring'catches will force it into closed position. 1
I claim as my invention A mop head comprising a stationary jaw composed of a single strand of wire designed to form substantially a rectangular member, the side arms of said member being offset rearwardly adjacent theupper ends thereof to form loop-like bearings, the lower por- Oopies of this patent may be obtained for tions of said side arms being offset laterally .in the plane of the member to form a broadened lower end on the stationary jaw, a movable jaw composed of a single strand of wire bent to form substantially a rectangular .:member, the innercross bar thereof being ably with the inner cross bar of the stationary jaw and the outer opposed end coils of said springs being extended a considerable distance and engaged with the side bars of the movable jaw adjacent the outer end of the latter, whereby to retain said movable jaw in the bearings and yieldingly retain the same in contact with the broadened outer portion of the-stationary jaw.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY I. DAVIS.
