NICHOLAS BECK, 0F SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
SKIRT AND WAIST HOLDER.
Application filed February 26, 1914.
To all "whomit may concern.
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS BECK, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Seattle, King county, Washington,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt and /Vaist Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to articles of personal wear and consists of a skirt and Waist holder.
The object of my invention is to provide an effective, simple and cheap device for holding both skirts and waists, and one which will not be objectionable because of its bulk, and by the use of which the skirts and waists may be securely held in place.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown my invention in its preferred form of construction.
Figure 1 shows in use. Fig. 2 is side of the same.
My invention is composed of two parts, a plate, as 1, which is provided with garmentengaging means and a hook or suspension member secured to said plate.
The device is designed for being placed upon a belt by which it may be secured at the waist, but the waist band of a skirt may serve the same purpose.
The plate 1 has a tongue or tongues 2, preferably two in number, and integral therewith. In practice these would most readily be formed by stamping them out of the body of the plate, as has been shown in the drawings. The material should preferably be resilient enough to permit springing the tongues and the plate to permit insertion of fabrics, as the bottom of a waist, between them.
A hook 3, connected with the tongues 2, extends upward and has its uppermost end bent over to form the hook 33 which is adapted for hooking over a corset lace or for hooking engagement with another article of wearing apparel. This hook is hinged to the tongues 2, as is shown at 31, so that the plate may be placed in the most convenient position for insertion of the bottom of the waist.
The hook 33 is preferably rounded on its upper edge 34:, or at the point of bend, to thereby prevent a sharp corner where it engages the corset lace. In case no rear laces are used on the corset a loop may be my invention as applied an elevation of the inner Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1915. Serial No. 822,053.
secured at the proper place, and in case no corset is worn, the loop may be secured to any garment which is worn under the waist.
The spreading of the arms 30 of the hook member, will serve to pass and accommodate a button on the waist, should such exist at this place, as is quite probable, as waists commonly button at the back.
In using this device the hook 33 is secured in place on a corset lace, or upon such other support as may be used, and then the lower edge of the waist is inserted between the tongues 2 and the body of the plate 1. The order of doing these acts might, however, be reversed. The bottom edge of a waist as it would be placed in the device is shown by the dotted line 7. The belt 5, if this is used, is then fastened about the waist. The pressure produced by this belt clamps the bottom of the waist between the tongues and the body of the plate 1. This holds by clamping between smooth surfaces, so that there is no possibility of tearing the garment. The skirt is placed with its upper edge above the upper edge of the plate with which it engages and is prevented from dropping. The upper edge of the plate 1, before tightening the belt, tends to stand out slightly. The belt or waist band of the skirt lies above this upper edge and, consequently, when drawn snug, draws the waist band over this edge, which thereby engages the skirt to support it. As the lower edge of the waist has been inserted between the body of the device and the tongues 2, the upper edge of the body 1 will thereby be held sufficiently outward to securely engage and support the waistband of the skirt. If desired a strip of fabric may be secured to the inner side of the skirt waist, so that it may be inserted between tongues 2 and the plate 1, to better insure holding the skirt in p ace.
To provide means for suspending other garments from the plate 1 I have shown it as provided with holes 6 close to its lower edge into which hooks or pins may be inserted.
IVhat I claim as to patent is:
l. A skirt and waist holder comprising a plate having a pair of vertically extending tongues out therefrom, a suspension hook having branching arms pivotally secured by their ends to the upper free ends of said my invention and desire tongues, the pl ate being provided a Belt receiving guide at each end; outwardly frin the tongues.
