Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QFEICE.
LYMAN M. BATES, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED'- BOTTOMS.
Specitioation'forming part of Letters Patent No. 113,385, dated April 4, 1871; antedated March 27, 1871.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, LYMAN M. BATES, of Cleveland, in the county ot' Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain neu7 and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, Which make a part of this specitication.
The nature of my invention consists in a spring bed -bottom, composed of canvas or other suitable material drawn over a series of springs, and secured to a movable frame, or to the bed, and so arranged as to dispense With a top frame. It also consists in the construction of the frame to which the canvas may be secured, and in the mode of securing said canvas to the frame.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the sa1ne,I Will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in Which- Iiigure l is a perspective view, part in section, of my bed-bottoni; and Fig. 2 is a seetion ot the frame.
A represents a frame of any suitable dimensions, on the upper side of which is secured a series of slats, B B, running across the frame. On these slats are placed and suitably fastened any desired number oi' springs C C', over Which the canvas D is drawn, as shown. The canvas D is cut ot proper size, and at suitable intervals around its edges are inserted eyelets Ya a. When the canvas l) is stretched over the springs C C, audits edges brought down to the outside of the frame A, these eyelets are fastened on hooks b, which are driven in the frame in a groove, el, formed in its outer side, both on the sides and ends, as shown in Fig. 2. The frame A may then, on the outside, be covered by molding E, which would entirely hide the edge of the canvas and the hooks.
In place of the hooks b b the canvas `may be fastened by buttons or other suitable means, and it maybe fastened, if so desired, to the bed itself, instead of a movable frame.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure byV Letters Patent, is-
1. A spring bed-bottom, consisting of canvas or other suitable materialr dau-'n over a series of springs, and rendered detachable by being hooked or buttoned to the bed or frame, substantially as herein described.
2. The sides and ends ot' the frame when provided with grooves in Which the canvas is secured by hooks, buttons, or other suitable means, and which grooves may be covered by molding, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afiix my signature in presence ot two Witnesses.
LYMAN M. BATES.
