CARD-FILE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mair. 3&1, 1915.
-App1'icati0n filed Feb-ruarym, 11314. Ser-iel Na-819573.
To all whom rit'may concern Be it known that LJFRANK L. HOAGLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at W aupaca, county of Waupaca, and Stateof Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Card- Flile Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in file holders.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efiicient device for yieldingly holding aplurality of file cards together 1n a compact form, so that a portion of each card, upon which a name, number, index character, or the like, may be exposed to View, whereby any card in the file may be readily observed and withdrawn without disturbing the remaining cards.
My improvement pertains more especially, among other things, first, to the construction of the file case comprising the bottom, back, side members and a brace member, all of which are formed of a single piece of sheet metal stamped and folded into shape; and second, to the construction of the card retaining plate or cover and the device for yieldingly retaining such cover or plate 1n place against the file cards regardless of the number of such cards therein.
My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings 1n which- Figure 1 represents a perspectlve view of the holder provided with a set of file cards. Fig. 2 is a plan view drawn on line m- 0a of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section drawn on line y-y of Fig. 2.
Like parts are identified by the same reference numerals throughout the several views.
The card inclosing case proper comprises the back member 1, brace member 2, side members 3, 3 and bottom member 4, all of which parts are formed from a single piece of sheet metal which is adapted to be stamped and folded into the desired shape shown. The brace member 2 is severed from the back member 1 on its respective vertical sides and bottom, when it is bent rearwardly and secured to the bottom member 4 by solder, or in any other equivalent manner. The rear part of the bottom member 4 is severed from the front portion and bent rearwardly so as to' be brought beneath the upper end of the back member 1.
5 represents a V shaped bend formed at the junction of the back with the bottom as said bottom member "is bent rearwardly, as more clearly shown in Fig. '3, whereby an openingiis lformed beneath the cards 7. 8 represents the front plate -'or cover which is yieldingly f'retained in place by a spring, which spring comprises the circular membets 9, '9, central member 10 and the end menribers 11, 11, all of which parts are formed integral from a single piece of wire. The spring is secured to the bottom 1 by an overlapping lug 12 which lug is formed from a portion of the bottom member 4 by the end cuts 13, 13 and side out 14:. When the bottom member has been severed by said cuts, the lug 12 is turned back over the central portion 10 of said spring, whereby said spring is securely retained in place. The end members 11 of said spring are inserted through the apertures 15, 15 formed in the back member 1 and pass from thence across the inclosing case and through the apertures 16, 16 of the plate or cover 8. The lower edge of the plate or cover 8 is preferably curved so as to engage the front edge 17 of the bottom member and said spring performs the two-fold function of a retaining hinge and as a means of holding the upper edge of said plate or cover in yielding contact with the front surface of the cards 7 regardless of the number of cards contained in said case. It will be understood that the tension of the spring is such as to draw the side members 11, 11 rearwardly, whereby the plate or cover 8 is automatically thrown toward and retained in its closed position, shown in Figs. 1 and 3. It will also be understood that'the side members 11, 11 of the spring serve to support the series of cards 7 at a slight distance above the bottom member 4, as shown in Fig. 3. The plate or cover 8 is preferably provided upon its respective edges with a strengthening bead 18, the lower bead being adapted to conform in shape to the curved front edge 17 of the bottom member, as shown in Fig. 3.
While my file is adapted to be used for containing a great variety of cards, it is intended more especially to be used for holding recipes for domestic purposes.
aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a device of the described class, the combination of a case comprising a bottom, a back, a brace and two side members formed integrally by cutting and bending from a single piece of sheet metal, a cover and a spring, said spring comprising a central member, two circular members and two side members, said spring being adapted to perform the two-fold function of cover retaining hinges and retaining means for yieldingly holding the upper edge of said cover in its closed position against the file cards of said case.
2. In a device of the described class, the combination of a case comprising a bottom, a back, a brace and two side members formed integrally by cutting and bending from a single piece of sheet metal, a cover and a spring, said spring comprising a central member, and two side members formed at right angles to said central member, said spring being adapted to perform the twofold function of cover retaining hinges and 20 FRANK L. I-IOAGLIN.
