To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. MUTHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in sash fasteners and has relation more particularly to a device of this general char? acter especially designed and adapted for use in connection with a storm sash; and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having novel and improved means whereby the storm sash may be effectively locked or maintained in closed position or at varying degrees of elevation.
The invention has also for its object to provide a device of this general character including novel and improved means whereby the same will operate to automatically impart initial opening movement to the storm sash.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and ar rangement of the several parts of my improved sash fastener whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, T will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a window structure, with a storm sash shown in elevation, and illustrating a fastener constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the structure as shown in Fig. 1, but with the storm sash in closed position and illustrating iny improved fastener in top plan; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a window frame of any ordinary 0r preferred construction, in which is mounted for sliding movement the conventional sashes 2 and 3. Hingedly connected with the upper sill 1 of the frame is the storm sash 5 also of any ordinary or preferred construction and adapted to coact with the frame 1 in the usual manner.
My improved fastening means for the storm sash is herein disclosed as coacting with the bottom rail of the storm sash and with a side sill of the frame 1, but I wish to particularly state at this time that the de vice may be employed with equal facility with a side rail of the storm sash and the adjacent side or vertical member of the frame.
As herein disclosed, my improved fastening device comprises a bracket 6 substantially L-shape in form and secured to a side rail of the storm sash adjacent the lower end thereof, the foot of such bracket, when the storm sash is in closed position, projects within the keeper 7 herein disclosed as a conventional staple, although I do not wish to be limited in any way as to the structure of such keeper.
Pivotally engaged with the foot 8 of the bracket and by the substantially vertically disposed pivot pin 9 is the elongated latch member 10 which is disposed through the keeper 7 and has its inner or free extremity flexed to afford the depending arm 11, which serves to limit the outward movement of the storm sash upon its pivotal connection with the frame 1. The pivot 9, when the storm sash is in closed position, is positioned in the same vertical plane as the cross bar 12 of the keeper 7 parallel with the vertical plane of the bottom rail of such storm sash.
In order to maintain the sash 5 in closed position, I provide the elongated latch member 10 adjacent its free extremity with the perforation or opening 15 through which the upwardly projecting portion 16 of the retaining member 17 is adapted to be directed.
The inner or pivoted extremity of the latch member 10 is provided with an inwardly directed rounded extension 20 which is adapted to coact with the cross bar 12 of the keeper 7 in such a manner as to result in an automatic initial outward movement of the storm sash which serves to avoid the necessity of pounding or jarring the storm sash in such instances when the same has been frozen in closed position.
In order that the storm sash may be held by the elongated latch member 10 in differmg elevated positions, I provide the under surface of such latch member with the pockets or recesses 18 which are adapted to receive the lower parallel bar 19 of the keeper 7. It is further to be understood that the elongated latch member 10 possesses a certain degree of inherent resiliency, which further serves to maintain the notches or recesses 18 in such coaction with the lower parallel bar 19. It will also be self-evident that by having the keeper 7 and the elongated latch memberlO positioned as herein set forth, it is only necessary to raise the lower sash 2 of the window a few inches in order-to manipulate the storm sash, and, irrespective of the adjustment given to such storm sash, the lower sash will remain elevated to a slight distance.
From the foregoing description, it is thought that a sash fastener constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely, simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reasoncof the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and by reason of the effectiveness with which it performs its functions, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from r the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
The combination with a window frame and a storm sash pivotally engaged with such frame, of a fastening means for such storm sash comprising a keeper secured to a side sill of the frame, an elongated latch member pivotally engaged with a rail of the storm sash and directed through such keeper, such latch member in close proximity to its pivotal connection with the storm sash being provided with a recess to receive a bar of the keeper, said pivoted extremity of the latch member being provided with an inwardly disposed rounded extension, the inner edge of said extension being in continuation of the edge of the recess, and means carried by a rail of the storm sash and coacting with the latch member for maintaining such bar of the keeper within the recess of the latch, the relative positions of the pivotal connection between the latch member and the storm sash and the recess within the latch being such that when the latch is adjusted on its pivot to release the same from the keeper, the inner edge of the rounded extension engaging the keeper to impart an initial outward movement to the storm sash.
