Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 16, 1914. Serial N 0. 872,454.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JACOB BITTER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in New York, in the borough of Man: hattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to ladies hand bags,
and more particularly to fastening means therefor, designed to prevent inadvertent. opening of the bag, while being carried, and the consequent loss of its contents.
7 An object of the invention is to provide a double safety look, being attractive in design, simple and eflicient when in use, and comparatively inexpensive in the cost of manufacture, thereby rendering the same commercially desirable.
A further object of the invention is to provide a safety lock for hand bags or the like, which will prevent accidental disengagement, but which can be easily and readily operated, and theopening ofthe hand bag can be accomplished with the same operation. 1 v
The invention will be best understood when having reference tothe accompanying drawings, taken in connection with the detail and description. thereof, and part1cularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my improved lock applied to the frame of a bag, preferably aladys hand bag. Fig. 2 is a front view on a somewhat enlarged scale, ofthe structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a front view'of another embodiment of my invention; Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on line 55 of Fig. l; and Fig. 6 is a plan view of'the embodiment shown in Figs. 4 and 5.

Referring to thedrawings, a portion of'a ladys hand bag is disclosed having side walls 10 and 11, which are made of leather, cloth, or similar suitable material, and having their edges reinforced by means of the metal frames 12 and 13. ' The looking-means comprise primary and secondary locks, which securely fasten-the walls of the hand bag together, thereby pre venting accidental opening of the bag. Mounted upon one of the frames 13 are supporting-members 15 and 16, each of which comprise a ball-shaped portion 17, having'a socket 18 formed therein, and the ballshaped portion being supported upon stand ards 19,- the latter being secured to the frame 13 by means of soldering or in any other suitable manner. Journaled within the sockets 18 are stub-shafts 20 formed with a yoke 21. The medial portion of the yoke extends downwardly, with a projection 23, whioh is adapted to engage under the lower edge of the frame 12 in such a manner that it will besufficiently locked thereto, and can onlybe removedby inserting a finger of the operator under the yoke when it the bag. The member 30 is also provided with the recess 33 in the lower wall thereof, which is adaptprojection 35 carried by the frame 12, whereby the-two frames may be locked together. The projection 35 has a curvature which will enablethe front wall of" the member 30 to easily andreadily ride ondary locking-member. The projection 31 forms a resilient pivot connection for the member 30, and when the projection 35 .rests thereupon when opening or closing the secwithin the recess 33 formedwithin the member 30,]the projection 35 will abut against and thereby hold the sections of the hand bag closely together.
Between the frame 12 and the side-wall 10 of the bag, one edge of an apron a0 is secured, and this apron is arranged underneath the yoke portion 21, at its lowermost end 38. The function of this apron is to cause the disengagement of the yoke portion of this projection from the frame 12 so as to thereby bring about the unlocking of the primary lock formed by the yoke 21. When an operator wearing heavy gloves or the like, and thus cannot very easily insert a finger under the lowermost end 38 of the yoke 21 by pulling upon the apron 10, which can be easily grasped by the operator, the primary lockcan be readily opened. Thus, by pulling the apron 40, the pressure thus produced is exerted upon the lowermost end 38 of the yoke portion 21, and this pressure overcomes the friction that exists between the projection 23 and frame 12. By this the disengagement of the projection 23 from the frame 12 is caused, and a certain rebound is produced whereby the yoke portion is sprung up into the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. Thereupon the secondary lock 30 may be readily operated so as to cause the disengagement of the member 34: from the projection 35. By the cotiperation of the apron, the yoke of this primary lock and the members of the secondary look, a very practical and simple and secure lock for ladies hand bags is provided. 7
In order to enable the unlocking of both the primary and secondary locks to be carried out by one movement of the hand, another embodiment of the invention is presented inFigs. a to 6. In this form of the invention, the yoke 50 which has a downwardly-projecting portion 51 and the projection 52 are pivoted directly to the member 55, which is very much like the member 80. For this purpose the member 55 is provided with bearings 56 in which the shaft portions 57 of the yoke portion 50 are pivoted. T he member 55 is provided with a resilient member 58, which is secured to the frame 15 and this member 55, in this embodiment, is hollow, as shown in Fig. 5, and has its edge 59 coiiperate with the projection 60 on the frame 12. Intermediate the frame 12 and the side wall 10, an apron 61, like the apron 40 of Fig. 1, is provided, and the projection 52 of the yoke portion 50 cooperates with the frame 12 in a similar manner as described in connection with Fig. 2. The hand bags as shown in the drawing may be provided with an inner lining, indicated by the numeral 62.
T he embodiment shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 is operated by exerting a certain pull on the apron 60, whereby the friction between the projection 52 of frame 12 is overcome, and when this is overcome, the yoke 50 is swung over the member 55, and then with a movement of the hand, which follows very closely the direction of movement employed to pull on the apron, the secondary lock 55 may be caused to be disengaged.
Of course, in either of the cases the primary lock formed of the yoke portion may be disengaged independent of the use of the apron.
My improved device has certain advantages in that it is simple in operation and in manufacture, is pleasing in appearance, and may be readily operated, either to close or unlockthe frames of the bag member, but at the same time, it gives a very efiicient method of locking the bag frame portions together.
1 have shown an embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An improvedladys hand bag, comprising frames, a yoke portion passing from one frame to the other and provided with a projection adapted to engage one of the frames, a secondary look within the yoke portion, and an apron beneath the yoke portion for disengaging the yoke portion from the frame.
2. An improved ladys hand bag, comprising frames, a yoke pivotally supported on one of the frames, and fastened over the other frame, andprovided with a projection engaging the other frame, an apron secured to said last-named frame, arranged beneath the yoke portion, and a secondary lock engaging the frames.
3; An improved ladys hand bag, comprising frames, a yoke portion pivotally supported and fastened over one of the frames, a secondary lock pivoted within the yoke portion to the other of the frames, and an apron beneath the yoke portion adapted to be operated by the hand to exert a pressure on the yoke portion and cause its disengagement to enable the secondary lock to be disengaged by the movement of the hand disengaging the yoke portion lock.

In a device of the character described, the combination, with a pair of hinged frames, of locking-means for fastening the frames together, comprising a resiliently mounted grasping member, the lower wall of the grasping member having a recess formed therein, a projection carried by one of the frames, and adapted to rest within said opening, and a primary locking-member pivotally mounted upon said resilient projection.
