To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. GOULD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cranston, in'the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hinges, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a hinge which can be secured in place without the use of screws or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hinge structure of simple and economical construction which can be effectively held in position and in which the holding means can be easily manipulated to enable disconnection of the hinge leaves from the parts to which the leaves are connected.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a box to which the present invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the hinge. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hinge, and Fig. is a section taken on the line 4.-i of Fig. 2.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, the two leaves 2 are formed of a single piece of metal which is folded or doubled upon itself to form the knuckles 3 the metal thus possessing double thickness which strengthens the hinge in an obvious manner. The doubled portions of the metal may be secured to provide a rigid single piece in any desired manner, such as by soldering, or riveting, or any other preferred and suitable or approved manner.
One of the side portions of each of the leaves is provided with an extension 4 which provides the anchoring means for the respective leaves. The extensions or ears 4: are located central of the length of the leaves and since the leaves are formed of' bendable sheet metal, the ears or extensions 4 are consequently capable of being easily bent.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings I have shown the invention applied to a box in which case both the box B and the cover C are formed with inclined slots S of a depth to receive the respective leaves. In applying the invention, the leaves are passed through the slots so as'to expose only the knuckles on the exterior of the box, in which position of the parts the extensions will occupy the dotted line positions depicted in Fig. l of the drawings. The extensions are then bent inwardly toward one another to engage the inner faces of the ends of the box and cover, which thus clenches the-parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, full line position.
As above stated the entire leaves of the hinge are received in the slots excepting the knuckles thereof, which fact combined with that of the slots S being inclined, gives an effective and secure anchorage to the leaves, since by reason of the inclination of the slots, the tension or pull on the extensions is at an acute angle thereto, which requires abnormal pull to displace the extensions, that is to say, a pull which the box in ordinary usage would not be subjected to.
It will further be seen that by merely restoring the extensions 4 to the dotted line positions shown in Fig. 1, that the leaves may be easily withdrawn from the slots S, and the hinge consequently removed.
The present invention is of special value in securing hinges to boxes which are made of small thicknesses of-material, since the thickness of the material governs the size or diameter of the screws which are empl0yed in securing the hinges in place, and screws possessed of small diameter are not effective in firmly holding the hinges in position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a hinge, a pair of leaves each formed of a piece of sheet metal folded upon itself to provide knuckles, one side of each leaf being formed with a central extension which projects beyond the adjacent side of the other side of the leaf, said leaves, excepting the knuckles thereof being adapted for reception in slots diagonally cut in the two parts which the hinge is to connect, and said extensions projecting beyond the slots and being bendable into engagement with the edge of the adjacent leaf and the respective parts.
