Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led July 27, 1914. Serial No. 853,265.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS W. CHRIS- 'rori-inL, a citizen of the United States, re siding at University City, St. Louis county, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Hinge, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges and consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts possessing the novel qualities and serving the useful functions hereinafter fully described.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved hinge in which portions of the leaves are retained ata distance from the surfaces to which the hinge is secured, in combination with means for rigidly and securely supporting the raised portions of the hinge to prevent compression thereof, and means for distributing the stresses properly upon the screws or other elements by which the hinge is secured in place.
Another object is to provide a hinge of the type mentioned in which the outer surfaces of both leaves of the hinge are in the same plane, and in which one of the leaves is secured to a. surface which is beyond or inwardly from the surface to which the other leaf of the hinge is attached, in combination with devices for supporting the last named leaf to prevent compression of the outer or raised portion thereof, and elements for receiving and distributing the stresses upon the screws by which the hinge is held in place.
Other objects to be attained by the improvements embodied in my hinge will be apparent from the following description in which reference is made to the accompany ing drawings, wherein- Figure l is a. view illustrating the hinge secured to a trunk. Fig. 2 is aview of the outer surface of the hinge. Fig. 3 is a view of the inner surface of the hinge. Fig. e is a longitndinal section substantially on the line 1 -4 of Fig. 2, extending through both lea-ves of the hinge. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of one of the leaves of the hinge, substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a view of the inner surface of a modified form of hinge in which the inner surfaces of the two leaves of the hinge are in di'erent planes. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section through both leaves of the hinge taken approximately along the line 7--7 of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is an end elevation of one of the leaves of the hinge illustrating the knuckles, and thestruts which support they outer portion of the leaf; this view illustrating the end of that leaf which extends inwardly beyond the plane of the coperating leaf. In the embodiment illustrated on sheet 1 of the drawings there is a leaf Anand acooperating leaf B. rllhe leaf A is composed of metal having a flat portion l and a raised portion 2. The edges 3 of the raised porltion 2 are in the sameplane with the inner surface of the flat portion 1 and are adapted to bear against the surface to which the hinge is secured, as clearly-illustratedY in Fig. l. The outer surfaces of the edges are curved, as shown in Fig. 5, thus presenting inclined surfaces at'both Vsides of thel hinge so that the hinge will slide readily without effecting a rigid abutment against the other hinges or objects with which the hinge may come in contact. In this connection it may be mentioned that the hinge is especially: adapted for use in connection with trunks, and the like, so that the novel features and construction of the hinge and the novel functions may be more readily comprehended.
The pivoted end of the leaf A is formed with a series of knuckles ll, whose outer surfaces are flush with the outer surface of the raised portion 2 ofthe hinge and whosev ing in the same plane with the inner surface' of the flat portion land the edges 3, thus Patented Mar. 23, 1915.,
providing a rigid support adapted to bear against the surface to which the hinge is secured iininediately adjacent to the knuckles. Portions 6 between the Knuckles 4t are also turned inwardly to provide struts which .are arranged to bear the surface to which the hinge is secured and thus provide a very strong and rigid support to prevent compression of the raised portion of the leaf. A nninher holes are fornied through the flat portion 1 of the hinge for receiving the fastening devices which the hinge is secured in place. The raised portion 2 of the hinge is forined with a nuinber of countersunk portions 8 having holes 9. The holes 9 receive the fastening devices which extend through the raised portion of the leaf A, and the depressions i countersunk )ortions 8 receive the heads of the fastening devices so that the heads will be flush with the outer surface of the raised portion of the hinge, thus preventing the fastening devices froin becoining engaged with other objects.
ln order to strengthen the hinge and to distribute the stress properly upon the fastening devices, l have provided an arch nieinber 10 within the leaf A. ln the forni illustrated this arch member is secured between the countersunk portions 8 and is rigidly fastened in connection witi the leaf A by a fastening device in the forni of a rivet 11'. rlhe arch nieniber abuts against the countersunk portions 8 braced and strengthenery in its position. The arch ineinber 10 is provided with laterally extending portions 12 whose ends preferably engage against or terminate adjacent to the edge portions 3. l't is preferable, though not essential, thad the inner surfaces of the lateral extending portions 12 be in the saine plane with the edges 3 and. the inner surface of the flat portion 1 of the leaf, thus providing additional support for the raised portion of the hinge.
The lateral extensions 1Q are provided with holes 13 'which register with the holes 9 and through which the fastening devices extend, thus distributing the stress upon the fastening devices and preventing all of the stress froni being thrown upon the fasten! ing devices at a distance from the surface to which the hinge is secured.
The leaf B is similarly constructed, coinprising a fiat portion 14C and a raised portion 1o having inwardly turned edges 1G terminating in the saine plane with the innervsurface of the fiat portion 11i and, in the einbodiinent illustrated on Sheet 1 of the drawings, in the saine plane with the inner surface of the fiat portion 1 and the edges 3 of the leaf A. Knuckles 17 are formed at the pivoted edge of the leaf B tha and is thereby Y and extend between the knuckles il, the two leaves of the hinge being pivoted together by a hinge pin 18 passing through said knuckles. rllhe edge of the raised portion laterally frein. the knuckles 17 is turned irwai'dly to forni supporting edges 19 which bear against thosurface to wnich the hinge is secured. Holes 2l are formed in the flat portion lil of the leaf B for receiving the fastening devices, and coun ersunk portions 22 are foi-ined in the raised portion of the leaf and provided with holes 23 for receiving the fastening device adjacent to the pivoted edge of the leaf. The countersunk portions are of such depth that they will entirely receive the heads of the fastening devices, thus preventing thein frein becoming engaged with other objects. i

ln the forni of hinge illustrated in Figs. 6 to 9 there is a leaf C which, as shown, is precisely similar to the leaf B, comprising a flat portion 2S and a raised portion 29 having inwardly turned edges 30 and 31, and provided with knuckles Countersunk 'portions 33 rave holes 311; which receive fastening' devices, there being an arch 35 secured in position by a rivet 36 and provided with lateral portions 37 having holes 38 registering with the holes Sil for receiving the fastening devices and distributing the stresses thereon.
rlhe coperating leaf D consisting of a portion 39 substantially in the saine plane with the portion 28 of the leaf C, has a raised portion 40 which is in the saine plane with the raised portion 29. An inwardly turned flange 41 extends inwardly beyond the plane in which the portions 28 andV 29 lie and is adapted to bear against thersurface inwardly from the surface to which the leaf C is secured. The pivoted edge of the leaf D is formed with knuckles 42 between which the knuckles 32 extend and the two leaves of the hinge are pivoted together by a pin 43 passing through said knuckles. The portion 39 of the leaf D is provided with a number of holes 44 for receiving the fastening devices, and the raised portion 40 is provided with countersunk portions 45 having holes 46 through which the fastening devices extend, the heads of said fastening devices being entirely received within the countersunk portions 45, An arch member 47 is secured in position between the countersunk portions 45 by a rivet 48 and has laterally extending portions 49 extending to the side flanges 4l. The lateral extensions 49 are provided with holes 50 which regis ter with the holes 46 and receive the fastening devices and distribute the stress of the hinge thereon. Struts 5l are formed between the knuckles 42 and extend inwardly beyond the plane of the leaf C, and termi nate in the same plane with the inner edge of the flanges 4l, thus rigidly and firmly supporting the leaf D upon a plane inwardly from the plane of the leaf C.
What l claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is l. A hinge, comprising leaves having flat portions arranged to bear against the surface to which the hinge is secured and raised portions provided with holes for fastening devices, knuckles below the outer surface of said raised portions, a pin `'within said knuckles pivoting said leaves together, struts rigid with the inner sides of said raised portions and arranged to bear against the surface to which thehinge is secured, and members secured within said raised portions and having portions bearingagainst the surface to which the hinge is secured with holes in said bearing portions registering with the holes in said raised portions of the hinge to receive the fastening devices, substantially as described.
2. A hinge, comprising leaves having raisedY portions, knuckles formed on said raised portions, a pin passing through said knuckles and pivoting the leaves together, struts formed between said knuckles and arranged to bear against the surface to which the hinge is secured to support said raised portions, and a supporting member secured within the raised portion of each leaf for distributing the stress upon the fastening devices.
