To aZZ w/z-O m it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES A. VViin imin, a citizen of the United States, and res dent of the county of Somerset and State of New- Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fireproof doors, and it has for its object to provide an improved structure of this type which will possess advantages in point of simplicity, iiiexpensiveness, strength and rigidity, light ness, and general efliciency, and which will enable the effective and convenlent attachment of the lilnges and locks.
My present invention and improvements are especially designed to provide an effective door for use in buildings where high fireproof quality is required.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a face view of my improved door, parts being broken away to more clearly show the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, taken on the line as m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal transverse section, taken on the line g y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the hinge-supporting braces. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the lock-supporting braces.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a channel-frame which is constructed of fireproof material, preferably sheet metal, and comprises a central member, 2, and inwardly-directed spaced parallel flanges, 3. Said channel-frame 1 is preferably provided, between the spaced flanges 3, with reinforcing channel-blocks, as at 4. Cross-braces, as at 5, extend from side to side of the channelframe 1, and a brace, 6, extends centrally through said frame from top to bottom and intersects the cross-braces 5. These braces 5 and 6 constitute a braceframe within the door structure, to thoroughly brace the same, and are preferably formed of sheet metal, and have their terminal ends bent at right angles, to lie in effective contact with the inner face of the central member 2 of the channel-frame 1, as shown at 7.

The outer frame 8 is preferably integrally constructed of metal and is wider than the central member 2 of the channel-frame 1, whereby the side edges of the frame 8 project beyond said channelframe and form edge flanges, 11, between which andiesting on the spaced flanges 3 p of the, channel fralne, are set panels, 12,

Thus, the panels 12, when the structure is assembled, are guidedi'nto place and held against lateral and longitudinal movement by the edge flanges 11 of the outer frame 8.
One object of my present invention is to provide a fireproof door structure in which the structural elements are relatively asso ciated and so constructed that a great reduction in weight is obtained, and in order to secure the necessary strength and rigidity at the points of connection of the hinges and lock to the structure, I employ reinforcing means at said points, preferably in the form of hinge-supporting braces, 14, two of which are provided at the one edge of the door,
and lOCl{Sl1pPOItl11g braces, 15, carried at the opposite edge of the door. Additional reinforcing channel-blocks, as at 4*, areemployed in relation to the channel-frame 1, and are secured to the supplemental braces 5 and 6, preferably at the angles formed by the crossing of said braces, shown at 16.
The hinge-supporting braces 14 comprise angular reinforcing blocks, as at 17, and connecting bars, as at 18, and are provided with suitable threaded perforations, 19, adapted to receive the hinge-attaching screws, 20, which are passed through leaves, 21, of hinges, 22, and through the central member 2 ofthe channel-frame 1 and into the hingesupporting braces 14.
The improved construct-ion enables a smooth finish at the hinge-edge of the door, by providing for the formation of recesses, 23, in the outerframe 8, to receive the leaves 21 of the hinges 22, which latter, when secured in position, thus lie flush with the outer face of the outer frame 8 and the The lock-supporting braces 15 are secured between the flanges 3 of the channel-frame l at the lock-edge of the door opposite the hinges, and comprise angular reinforcing blocks, as at 24, having extensions, 25, which underlie the ends of a slot or recess, 26, formed in the outer frame 8 at the lock-edge of the door. The extensions 25 are provided with threaded perforations, 27, and the perforated flanges, 28, of a lock, 29, lying in the slot or recess 26 and between the lock-supporting braces 15, are secured to said extensions 25 by suitable screws, 30, and thus the outer face of the lock is adapted to lie flush with the outer face of the outer frame 8, as shown in Fig. l.
The panels 12 of the door structure are securely held in place by screws, 31, which pass through said panels and into the reinforcing channel-blocks P at the central portion of the channel-frame l, and additional screws, 31, are also preferably employed near the edge of the panels and are passed through suitable perforations, 32, in the flanges 3 of the channel-frame 1 and enter the reinforcing blocks 4.
The construction of my improved fireproof door as above described provides a structure which is I absolutely fireproof, strong, durable and comparatively inexpensive, and by reason of the spaced relation of the panels 12 an air chamber, as at 33, is provided within the structure, which enhances its fireproof quality, as will be readily understood.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the detail construction and arrangement of parts as herein shown and described, as it is manifest that variations and modifications therein may be resorted to, in the adaptation of my invention to varying conditions of use, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifications as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A fireproof door, comprising an outer frame extending around and constituting the outer edge portion of the door, an inner channelframe having its base plate secured to the inner face of said outer frame and its flanges projecting therefrom inwardly, a brace frame secured to said channel-frame and extending across the interior area inclosed by said channel-frame, and panels secured to the outer faces of the flanges of said channel-frame.
2. A fireproof door, comprising a channelframe extending at the outer edge portion of the door and having its flanges projecting inwardly, a brace frame extending across the door between the opposite members of said channel-frame, reinforcing blocks secured to said brace frame, and panels secured to said channel-frame and to said reinforcing blocks.
3. A fireproof door, comprising a channel-frame extending at the outer edge portion of the door and having its flanges projecting inwardly, brace blocks mounted within said channel-frame between the flanges thereof, panels secured to said brace blocks and channel frame, and braces extending across the door between the opposite members of said channel-frame and between said panels.
4. A fireproof door, comprising an inner channel-frame extending at the outer edge portion of the door and having its flanges projecting inwardly, reinforcing blocks mounted within said channel-frame between the flanges thereof, panels secured to the outer faces of the flanges of said channel frame and to said blocks, a brace frame extending across the door between the opposite members of said channel-frame and bet vecn said panels, and an outer frame extending around and constituting the outer edge portion of the door and secured to the base plate of said channel-frame, said outer frame projecting laterally beyond said channel-frame and inclosing the edges of said panels.
