The invention to be hereinafter described relates to looms for weaving wherein a fresh supply of filling is automatically provided when that in the running shuttle has be come broken or substantially exhausted. Looms of this general character are well understood by those skilled in the art, and consequently need no description herein. When a fresh supply of filling is automatically provided either by changing the shuttle or by inserting a fresh filling carrier or filled bobbin in the shuttle. and the latter is shot across the lay, the filling end extends from the point where it has previously been secured to the edge of the cloth as the lay beats up. To sever this filling end close to the cloth selvage a thread parter is provided which may be and commonly is mounted on the temple, though, of course, thismay be otherwise supported. In any event, the new filling end should be severed by the thread parter and danger of its being carricd into the shed eliminated as soon after filling replenishment as possible. It may not be severed or. cut on the first beat up and then carried into the shed, or it may break or be cut and hang from the point where it was previously secured and eventually carried into the shed. These matters are well understood by those familiar with the art, as pointed out by the patent to Jonas Northrop, No. 724,120, March 31, 1903.
With these matters in mind the present invention aims to provide means whereby the new filling end shall be presented to the thread parter in the most favorable position for its action, and a further purpose is to hold or retain the filling end so that it will not be drawn into the shed. These and other objects and purposes of the invention will best be made clear from the following description and accompanying drawing of one form of means for carrying the invention into practical efiect, it being understood that the details thereof may be vaform or embodiment of the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22, Fig. l.
The loom frame 1, the lay 2, the breast eam 3, the loom temple 4, the thread parter or severing device 5, the shuttle-box 6, the shuttle 7, picker stick 8, picker 9, and their associated relations are or may be substantially as usual, and being well understood by those skilled in the art need not be herein further described.
In looms of the filling re lenishing type herein represented, where the filling is replenished by substituting a carrier or bobbin having a fresh supply of filling for that in the running shuttle, it is usual to tie or secure the free end of the filling to a fixed part, so that when the carrier-or bobbin containing the wound filling is transferred to the shuttle and the latter is picked, the filling will be laid in the shed and the shuttle be threaded. In the present form of the invention the free end of the filling a is indicated as secured to the holder 6 so that as the shuttle is picked, as represented in Fig. l, the filling will be drawn from the carrier or bobbin and properly placed in the shed. Obviously the free end of the filling might be otherwise secured. filling at extending from the edge of the cloth to the thread holder 5 is technically known as the filling end, and during the weaving operation this filling end is liable to be caught by the shuttle and carried along with the service filling into the shed with the result that imperfect cloth is produced. To obviate this condition, the present invention contemplates means for engaging the filling end between the cloth and filling end holder and retaining it in such position that it will not be drawn into the shed either before or after the filling'end has been parted or cut adjacent the selvage, and for insuring the most favorable position of the filling end for the action of the thread parter. As one form of means to these ends the lay has mounted thereon a projection or pusher, which, on. the beat up following The part of the fresh filling replenishment, engages the filling 'end between the cloth and filling end holder and carries a bight or'loop of such thread forward to a retainer, which takes the bight or loop of thread from the projection or pusher and holds it for the action of the thread parter and after the thread is parted continues to hold the parted end out of danger zone, so that it will not be engaged by the siiugtle or carried between the warps of the s is In the drawings there is a bracket 10 mounted upon the lay 2 and secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by the bolt 11. Rising from the bracket 10 is an arm 12 carrying at its upper portion the projection 13. This projection 13 is preferably of an open hook shape, so that on the forward movement of the lay following the filling replenishment, the projection 13 will engage the filling end and push it forward or toward the front ofthe loom. The arm 12 may be of any convenient character, but is preferably indicated as comprising a curved surface 1 1 rising from the bracket 10 and inclining upwardly and backwardly toward the projection or pusher 13, the construction being such that should the filling end strike the curved surface 14 as the lay moves forward, such filling end would be raised into the position for engagement by the projection or pusher 13.
The retainer for taking the filling end a from the projection or hook 13 may be of various forms, that shown in the drawing being comprised by. a hook device secured in fixed position, but adjustably, ,on the breast beam. A preferred construction of this retainer comprises a member 15 secured upon a pin or bolt 16 rising from, the breast beam 3, a suitable washer 17, if desirable, being interposed between the member .15 and the breast beam to properly position the said member15 for receiving the filling end from the projection or pusher. At its rear end, or that nearest the lay, the member 15 is formed substantially hookshape, as indicated in Fig. 2, the hook end portion 18 whereof is preferably inclined or rounded, as indicated in Fig. 2, so that as the filling end is carried forward by the projection or hook 13, andmeets the member 15, the inclined or rounded hook end' 18 therefor will cause the filling end to rise up and over the same into a position to pass beneath the end 19 thereof, after which the filling end will be retained by the hook retainer as the lay moves back. The position of the retainer is preferably such that the filling carried by the projection or hook 13 -Wlll reach and pass into the control of the retainer as the lay reaches substantially its front position, and as the lay moves back,
will remain in control of said retainer.
Fromthe construction thus far described,
it will be seen that after the filling end a has been placed in control of the retainer,
into the shed.
In the present form of the filling end retainer, a bend or depressed portion 25 is provided to receive a filling end after it has been parted or severed at the cloth selvage, such bend being sufiiciently far in front of the lay when the latter is in front position to avoid all danger of the filling end or ends held therein from being caught and carried into the shed. Extending from the bend portion 25 is an arm 26 on which the filling endtwill first rest after it has been parted at the selvage, and on the next beat up the pusher arm 12 will engage the parted filling end and push it forward into the bend 25, as will be readily understood from Fig.
2, wherein it will be noted that the arm 26 is somewhat below the pusher 13 and that the filling end resting thereon would be engaged by the surface 14 of the arm 12 as the lay beats up, thereby pushing the filling forward into the bend 25. .If desired, the arm 26 might be slightly inclined downwardly from the hook to the bend, thereby facilitating the transfer of the filling end to the bend. This bend 25 acts also as a collector of parted or cut filling ends, so that the operative may from time to time grasp the ends collected in the bend and remove them from the machine.
In order to provide for proper. adjustment of the retainer, so that its hooked end may be properly positioned to coact with the pusher 13, the member 15 may be made adjustable. by providing an adjustable connection between the member 15 and the bolt 16, as by forming a slot 22 in the member 15 through which the bolt 16 may be passed, or
it may be otherwise provided,,as will 'be readily suggested to one skilled in the art. The bolt 16 may be of any desired character, and is preferably shown as a screw bolt having a washer 23 and a nut 24 for holding the parts in assembled relation.
While the present invention has been described as embodied in the particulars shown This may be done conveniently by the drawing, it is to be understood that the invention is susceptible of various forms within the true scope of the actual invention, as pointed out by the claims; and while the surface 14 may assist in directing the filling end to the hook or pusher, and subsequently act to push the parted filling end into the collector 25, yet this is not always necessary.
What is claimed is In a filling replenishing loom having a filling end holder, the combination of a filling end parter for parting the fresh-filling adjacent the edge of the cloth, means carried by the lay for engaging the filling between the shed and filling end holder and moving it forward, a guide for directing the filling to said means as the lay heats up, and a filling retainer for taking the filling from said means .and retaining it in forward position.
2. In a filling replenishing loom, a lay, a
filling end parter adjacent the edge of'the I cloth, a filling end retainer comprising an upwardly turned hook for engaging the filling end and retaining it in the range of actionof the thread parter as the lay moves back and provided with a bent portion between the hook and front of the loom to receive the filling end after it has been parted and retain it in front position.
3. In a filling replenishing loom having means for holding the free end of the fresh filling, the lay, a thread parter, means car ried by the lay for engaging the fresh filling between the shed and said filling end holding means, a guide leading to said means and directing the filling thereto as'the lay heats up, and a filling endretainer for engaging the filling as it is moved forward and retaining it in forward position as the lay moves back.
4. In a filling replenishing loom, means for holding the free end of the fresh filling, a thread parter, and a filling end retainer having a hooked end portion and a filling end collector forward of the hooked end portion.
5. In a filling replenishing loom, means for holding the free end of the fresh filling, a thread parter, a projection on the lay for engaging the fresh filling on the beat up following filling replenishment and moving it forward, a guide for directing the filling into engagement with said projection as the lay moves forward, a filling end retainer comprising a hook device for taking the filling from said projection and retaining it it forward, and a stationary filling end retainer extending backward toward the lay and having an upwardly-inclined end portion over which the filling is pushed by said projection for taking the filling from said projection and retaining it in forward position, and a depressed portion to gather and hold the filling ends near the front of the loom after the filling has been parted.
7. In a filling replenishing loom, a filling end retainer comprising a hooked end portion for engaging the filling and ashank or securing portion for securing the retainer in place, and a thread gathering and holding portion between the hooked end and shank portions.
8. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a filling end holder, a filling end retainer comprising a hook device in front of the lay, a pusher movable as the lay beats up to engage the filling end between the cloth and filling end holder and deliver it to the filling end retainer, said hook device having a filling end collector forward of the hook. 9. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a pusher mounted on the lay for engaging a filling end, a filling end retainer comprising a hook mounted in front of the lay, a filling end collector forward ofthe hook, and an arm extending from the hook to the collector.
