PAUL MAUSER, 9F OBERNDORF-ON-THEJTECKAR, GERMANY.
AUTOMATIC FIREARM.
Application filed August 30, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL Matisse, subject of the King of Wurtteinberg, residing at Oberndorf-onthe-Neckar, Wurtteinberg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in barrel coverings for firearms, consisting of a fluted tube, a wooden stock, and a wooden hand protecting casing. While in known coverings of this kindthe stool; and the casing completely surround the tube, according to'the present invention the tube is for the greater part of its length mounted free of the correspondingly shortened stock and casing, whereby prejudicial efiects upon the barrel by the wood particularly in the case of continuous firing, which renders the wood very liable to distortion, owing to heating is avoided, and in particular an im proved radiation of the heat is attained, so that the barrel is kept cooler than has hitherto been possible. The stock and the easing tightly embrace the tube so that an effective support of the barrel is secured.
Figure 1 shows an embodiment of the invention in longitudinal elevation, partly in section. Fig; 2 is a plan corresponding to Fig. i with the hand protecting casing removed. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical cross sections on the lines A--B and C-D respectively.
According to the invention, a fluted tube 7" is arranged around the barrel Z incli'ising a space between the barrel and the inner face of the .tube. The front sight 7.: and the back sight "2. are rigidly connected with this tube which is free to expand at its front end around the barrel, and is only retained at the rear end, owing to the factthat the foot 4/ of the back sight which is rigidly connected with it by closing over, or lap jointing, is firmly screwed onto the barrel. The rear portion of the tube r is tightly embraced by a short stock 8 and 2. correspond ing wooden hand protecting casing s which are both provided with ribs engaging the flutes of the tube r so that a good bearing is afforded between the Wood and the tube.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1915.
Serial No. 787,514.
The tube is free for the greater portion of its length, so that the radiation of heat from this tube is more complete than With the arrangements hitherto adopted in which the stock extends to the end of the barrel. The end of the barrel itself is mounted in the stock at its rear portion with sullicient clear ance to permit the air to circulate and-passoil. The rainrod t is arranged on the un-.
derside of the tube 1', extending into the stool; 5, thereby ador -ding increased protection on the underside of the barrel.
In firearms provided with a barrel coverin g as described above the tube can be seized without danger of burning the hand even after a large number of shots have been fired, and the barrel is effectively protected against distortion.
1. A firearm including a barrel, a fluted tube arranged around said barrel and inclosing a space between the barrel and the inner face of said fluted tube, a stock and a wooden hand protecting casing arranged around the rear portion of said tube and provided with ribs corresponding to the flutes of said tube so as to tightly embrace said tube.
2. A firearm including a barrel, a fluted tube arranged around-said barrel and inclosing a space between the barrel and the inner face of said fluted tube, a stock and a Wooden hand protecting casing tightly inclosing the rear portion of said tube, and front and rear sights carried by said tube.
3. A firearm including a barrel, a fluted tube arranged with spacearound said barrel and connected at the rear end with said barrel and free to expand at its front end around the barrel, a stock and a wooden hand protecting casing tightly arranged around the rear portion of said tube and provided with ribs corresponding to the flutes of said tube so as to tightly embrace said tube.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
FAUL MAUSER.
