FIREARM.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1911.
Application tiled October 19,1910. Serial No. 587,861.
in;r is a tull. clear, and exact description.
ln the employment of modern automatic loading firearms for military purposes it has latterly been found to be necessary to inelose the barrel in the stoel: 'tor itsI entirel length, that is to say to provide it throughout' its whole length with what is termed hand protection. in ordervto protect the hands of the user from burning. It has, however, been .'lionnd that with long-continued quick tirinkgr thev stock begins to Smoke and even to carhouize, so that means areI required to insulate the stock (which. is itself used as a heat insulating means) from the action ot the heatot the barrel. Means serving this object of air cooling,r or heat insulation for the stocks of firearms affording protection for the hands is illustrated by way of examplein the aeronqmnyingr dra-wing, in which: i
Figure 1 shows on embodiment of the invention in longitudinal elevation, partlylin section. F ig. 2 is a vertical cross section on the line A-A in Fig. 1: and Fig. 3 illustrates another constrnctional form or" the invent-ion in longitudinal elevation, partlbr in section.
ln accordance. with the invention, atube r is arranged inside the wooden stock over the barrel Z which is inelosed below throughout its entire length b v the stock s and above by the protecting wood casing hp: the front end ot' this tube 1f bears'against. the front sight support and its rear end bears againstthe foot of the haelt sight. This tube fr, in which the barrel is entirely tree, is tinted in such a manner that owing' to the space formed between the wooden .stoclaand the tube, the air is able to pass hetweenithe barrel and the stock and the hand protecting` easing.
'lhe tube Ii' is formed with discharge aperturesI '1^ whirh place it in cmnmunieation with the l'lutiugs and also with longitudinal reeesses .vl`in the .stm-.k which are formed ()n its under side the stoel: itself is formed with obliquo air apen lures which establish conunuuiration lie-- tween the longitudinal reresses al and the atmosphere. ln this manner llirient cooling ot' the barrel is provided for, the openings in the tube enable the hot air to issue into the. wide recesses in the stock, While the barrel itself does notl become so rapidly heated. because it is entirely free in the tube, and deterioration of the barrel owing' t0 the trirtion ot the bullet is considerably re duced.
The barrel and tlu` tube constitute a Very rigid whole. and impart. adequate strength t-o the stoel; so that exatitude of aim is inrreased. because otherwise, when greatly tart that thtl fibers of the wood do not run exactly parallel and this causes distortion ot' the barrel. and thus impairs the accuracy ot aim. All these defects are almost entirely avoided in the present larranggement by the combination of tbe stock with a tube arranged inside it and inclosing the barrel, this tul'.e.heing provided with Ventilating ports.
ln the construction illustrated in Fig..3 the tube r which is arranged over the barrel Z is eut. witslna screw thread e on its rear end .whereit'i's screwed onto a correspondingl)v threaded portion ot' the barrel. In order to strengthen it, the threaded part e of the tube v' is preferably surrounded by a steel ring f or the like. The length of the tube f' is such that between its trout end and that in tiring a t'ree linear expansion of the outer tube can take place.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure b v Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. firearm including a barrel, a tinted tubular member arranged around said barrel and inclosinzgr a space between the. barre-l and the inner tare ot' said tinted tubular member. a stock and a hand protecting casing arranged around said tubular member, openings in .said tubular member and transverse passages extendingI through said stock.
2. tirearm including a barrel. a tluted tubular member arranged around said barrel and iurloslnr a space between the barrel and 4the inner tamot' A aid tubular member. openings in .said tnbular member. a stock formed with recesses. a hand protectionlr easing. said .stonk and hand protecting casing' ar angfed around said tubular member and transverse passagers' extending through said stock leadin;r trom the exterior into said recesses.
uit. tirearm inchnlinj.r a barrel 4formed l with a screw thread on the. outer periphery the front sight supportplay is provided sot heated. the stoel: is distorted owing to the thereof, a lnted tubular member arranged l tnhnlar member, and transverse pawn-:ages 10 around said barrel and inelosing a Space beextending;r through Suid stonk.
tween the barrel and the inner face of said In \\'iiness hei-trof, 1 have hereunto tinted tubular member, a screw thread signed my name in the presence ef tno snhformed on said tubular member and engagseribing nimes-ses.
ing with the screw thread on said barrel, IAUI) MAUSIGR. openings in said tubular member, a stock, fitnessen-z a hand protecting easing, said stock and Elim-:sr llx'rimxmxx,
