To all 1071011262? may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN DEMARES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Stevens Point, in the county of Portand State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in portable fences.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a portable fence structure adapted for assembling in any desired lengths and having tiltable supporting posts adjustable to normal vertical positions regardless of the contour of the land upon which the fence is constructed.

A further object is to provide a fence post as a new article of manufacture and having a portable base readily secured to the ground and with the upright post member centrally pivoted thereto and rigidly retained in the desired adjusted position by means of suitable clamping devices.

A still further object is to provide separate lengths of fence having a portable post at each end thereof and whereby a plurality of such lengths may be set up adjacent each other for forming the complete fence extending in any desired direction and of any required length.

l/Vith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then claimed.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a fence section of the present construction, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the adjacent connected ends of two fence sections partially shown in section.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, it will first be noted that the form of fence provided consists of a plurality of line wires 10 having their opposite ends fixed to posts 11 and whereby a complete fence section is formed, the same being adapted for use in multiple by positioning the post members of adjacent sections in the desired position.

The essential element of the present devlce consists of the form of portable fence post which is employed with each of the fence sections. A T-shaped base 12 has the post 11 pivoted centrally thereon by means of lugs 13 and the said base being adapted for firmly seating upon the ground or being sl ghtly embedded therein is removably retamed 1n position by means of long spikes 14 extending through perforations 15 adacent the free end of each of the arms 16 of the base, such spikes being driven into the ground and having terminal heads 17 for engaging the upper surfaces of the base arms.

Adjustable retaining struts 18 are pivoted to the lugs 19 at the opposite edges of the oppositely positioned base arms 16 and such struts are provided with notches 20 adjacent their free ends adapted to engage over the opposite ends of a transverse rod 21 carried by the post 11. The struts are in this manner positioned upon opposite sides of the post and are secured to the rod 21 at the opposite sides thereof by means of a set nut 22 at one end of the said rod and by means of a winged nut 23 upon the opposite end thereof. Bushings or collars 2 1 are mounted upon the rod 21 between the struts l8 and the post 11 for spacing the struts slightly away from the opposite sides of the post. With this construction of post and base and the same being provided at each end of each fence section, it will be readily seen that two identical sections may be positioned in longitudinal alinement with or at a desired angle to each other and thus formng a continuous fence.

When desired to assemble a plurality of fence sections, the end post members are positioned with their outstretched base arms in contact with each other as best illustrated in Fig. 2 and with the posts 11 adjusted and fixed in parallelism. l/Vhile the struts 18 will rigidly hold the posts in position and parallel to each other, it may also be desirable to position a staple 25 upon one of the posts and a hook 26 upon the other post for interengaging therewith and thus more firmly uniting the fence sections together. When the ground upon which the fence is assembled is sloping or uneven, the base 12 of each post will be rigidly secured to the ground and the post 11 which is pivoted thereto will be moved to a vertical position and the struts 18 engaged with the bar 21 thereof and fixed in such position by means of the retaining nuts 22 and 23.

The rod 21 is preferably retained transversely of the post 11 by means of a threaded bushing 27 centrally positioned within the post and through which the rod is screwed, the said rod having a slightly enlarged screw-threaded central portion. The rod however may be formed in two opposite sections if desired and each of the same screw-threaded into the opposite ends of the casting 27. It will be noted that the posts 11 are preferably formed of cast iron although obviously the same may be made of any suitable material.

It will thus be seen that a serviceable fence post for a portable fence is provided and which will accurately position the entire fence structure vertically regardless of the lay of the land, while the employment of separate fence sections with a portable and adjustable post at each end thereof also renders the same easy to assemble as well as to transport from place to place.

While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferable embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction without de parting from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What I claim as new is An article of manufacture comprising a T-shaped base, spaced lugs centrally mounted thereon, a post having its lower end pivoted between the said lugs, a bar transversely secured to the said post and having projecting opposite ends, opposite edge positioned lugs upon said base, struts pivoted to said edge positioned lugs and extending at opposite sides of the said post and having notches adjacent their free ends adapted for adjusted engagement with the projecting ends of said bar, locking devices for said struts secured to said bar and retaining means for the said base.
