KNIFE-SHARPENER.
Application filed August 12, 1913, Serial No. 784,443. Renewed August 3, 1914 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND l3. HAYWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raleigh, in the county of Wake, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cutlery and edge tool sharpening devices, and particularly to an improvement on my copending application for knife sharpener, filed April 4, 1913, Serial Number 758,869.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple device of this character through which a knife blade may be drawn to effectively sharpen the same and in which pressure on the knife blade can be increased. or diminished at Will.
Another object is to provide a device of this character in which the abrading elements may be adjusted toward and away from each other.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of the sharpener. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig.3 is a top plan view. Fig. f is a vertical transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a section, similar to Fig. 4, showing a knife in position therebetween.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 and 11 represent respectively the lower and upper blocks, these blocks being of suitable thickness and prcferably rectangular in plan view. To the under face of the upper block 11 are secured the abrading elements 12, these elements being of any suitable material, as metal files, or stones. These abrading elements are secured in grooves 13 extending transversely of the under face of the block 11, and are arranged in suitably spaced parallel relation. Similar abrading elements 14 are secured in grooves 15 in the upper face of the lower block 10, and are in parallel relation with each other, but in staggered relation to the elements of the block 11. The block 10 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Man 9, 1915.
Serial No. 854,850.
is formed with perforated ears l6 through which suitable fastening devices may be passed to attachthe device to a support. Se cured to the under face of the block 10, and
adjacent the rear edge thereof is one end of 0" abow spring 17, the opposite end of said spring being bent under itself and secured to the upper face of the block 11. The spring 17 permits the blocks 10 and 11 to be yieldably adjusted toward and away from each other and pressure on the knife to be regulated. The spring also permits the inner end of the block 11 to move vertically.
Formed through the doubled portion of tie spring is an opening 19 through which passes the shank of a bolt 20, the inner end having a squared portion 21 and a head 22, said squared portion being formed inwardly of the head. The opposite end of the bolt is threaded and passes through the beforementioned opening 19, a winged nut 23 being carried thereby and arranged to bear against the outer face of the curved portion 18. The squared portion 21 is fitted snugly within a square opening 2% formed centrally in a double-winged member 25, this member being disposed vertically within the doubled portion of the spring 17 and bearing with its ends against the upper and lower portions of the spring. By manipulating the winged nut 23 the member '25 can be forced inwardly o outwardly so that its wings will force the portions of the spring 17 apart, or permit them to contract, thus accomplishing the adjustment of the blocks 10 and 11 toward and away from each other.
In using the device, the knife blade is inserted between the free ends of the blocks and pressure applied on the upper block. The knife is then moved longitudinally between the blocks, the abradlng elements bevcling both sides of the edge of the knife at the same time. Viith the device it is only necessary to pass the knife back and forth between the blocks several times to produce a keen edge. By means of the member the blocks can be moved toward and away from each other to permit the knife blade to be presented to new portions of the abrading elements.
What is claimed is 1- A knife sharpening device comprising a pair of blocks, the opposed faces of the blocks carrying strips of abrasive material, the abrasing strips of one block being arranged in staggered relation to those of the against the spring, said bolt being disposed 10 other block, a bow spring embracing the through the double-Winged member.
